    The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     Description
    On 9 September 1985 the School of Food Science & Technology was redesignated the Department of Food Science & Technology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96). The head of department was Professor Ron Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the School of Biological Technologies was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Food Science & Technology, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the Department of Food Science & Technology within the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, as well as its two departments of Biotechnology and Food Science & Technology, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c). Staff from the Department of Food Science & Technology were moved to the newly formed School of Chemical Sciences (resolution CL00184/eii).     This series contains the handbooks of the Faculty of Science / Faculties of Biological Science and Science / Sciences / Science. Unlike all other faculty handbooks, this series contains a combination of faculty / board courses - at various times including the courses of the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Biological Science, Board of Studies in Science / Science & Mathematics, Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Science & Technology. Each item is a typed, paper-bound volume, which were released on a yearly basis and contains information about the courses available in the faculty, including subject descriptions. Prior to 1960, some of this information had been contained in the university calendar. From 1976 copies of the handbook are also included in the bound versions of the university calendar. From 2002 this series of faculty handbooks were replaced by a new series of Undergraduate and Postgraduate handbooks.

    The Faculty of Arts was created at the 9th November, 1959 meeting of Council, to be effective from 1st January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii). The initial meeting of the Faculty occurred on 24th February 1960, with Professor Morven Brown as Dean. In the beginning, the Faculty had five schools - English, History, Philosophy, Sociology and Librarianship. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). In 2013 the Faculty, under Dean Professor James Donald, consisted of five schools and seven Centres.     The Faculty of Science & Technology was created by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 8th July, 1997 with Associate Professor A. H. Dooley as the Presiding Member. At this time, under Dean Colin Sutherland, the Faculty contained six schools, four departments, three Centres, the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility and the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit. The Faculty of Science & Technology was disestablished by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 26th April, 2001.     The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in principle by Council on 22nd January, 1968 (resolution 68/19i). At its 8th July, 1968 meeting, Council then approved the formal operation of the Faculty from 1st July, 1968 (resolution 68/108). Initially administered by Dean Professor B. J. Ralph, the Faculty commenced life with six Schools - Applied Psychology, Biochemistry, Biological Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. The Faculty met for the first time on 29th July, 1968. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). Finally, on 2nd December, 1996, Council disestablished the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.     The Faculty of Technology was formed by Council on 14th May, 1956 (resolution 761i). This resolution also dictated that the Faculty would be concerned with developments in the Technologies of Fuel, Paint, Plastics and Rubber, and Ceramics and Nuclear Technology. The Faculty, under Professor D. W. Phillips, was initiated with five Schools Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering & Applied Geology, Metallurgy, Wool Technology and Textile Technology. The first meeting of the Faculty occurred on 29th June, 1956. On 9th May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55).     The formation of the Professorial Board was provided for in Chapter III of the by-laws passed by Council on 12th September, 1949 (resolution 5). These stated that the Professors and Associate Professors in the several Faculties and such other persons as Council may appoint shall form a Board, to be called the Professorial Board (III, 1). The Board was to be specially charged with the duty of furthering and co-ordinating the work of Faculties and Departments and of encouraging scholarship and research and of considering the studies and discipline of the University (III, 4, i). Specifically the Board could consider reports made to it by any faculty, appoint internal and external examiners, prescribe books and details of subjects for lectures, determine the conditions of competition for any post-graduate award, decide all questions of admission ad eundem gradum and advanced standing and submit recommendations to Council regarding teaching staff and academic standing (III, 4, ii). As well, any member of the Professorial Board was given the power to suspend any student, as long as the misconduct occurred in the Department or presence of the member (III, 5, a). The by-laws also dictated that the first Chairman of the Professorial Board would be elected in May, 1950 (III, 2). Meetings would be held at the discretion of the Chairman or at the written request of the President, Director or three members of the Board (III, 6, a). At the 13th March, 1950 meeting of Council it was determined that until July, 1950, the professors already appointed should act as a committee with authority to consider all matters which, in accordance with the provision of Chapter III of the By-laws (the Professorial Board), shall be within the jurisdiction of the Professorial Board when constituted (resolution 40ii). The first meeting of Professorial staff had in fact already taken place on 1st February, 1950, with Director A. Denning as Chairman, and meetings were held generally on a weekly basis until the end of June. Under the provision in the by-laws, on 31st May, 1950 Denning was formally elected as Chairman of the Professorial Board. The first committees of the Professorial Board were determined at the Professorial Committee's meeting on 6th June, 1950. These were Buildings & Sites, Equipment & Supplies, Research, Graduate School & Post-Graduate Studies, Publications & Library, Academic Studies & Standards and Staff & Students. The Professorial Board held its first official meeting on 4th July, 1950. At this meeting, the membership of the first seven committees named by the Professorial Committee on the 6th June was finalised. By the time of the last meeting of the Board on 7th June, 1988, approximately eighty committees had come and gone throughout the Board's existence. At the 14th September, 1987 meeting of Council changes to Chapter III of the by-laws were passed (resolution 87/99c). As a result, effective July 1988, the Professorial Board ceased to exist and the Academic Board was established in its place.     When the University began teaching its Bachelor of Arts degree in 1960 students were required to complete a sequence of two subjects in science. Most chose to undertake a sequence of two subjects offered by the School of Philosophy called Scientific Thought. (The University of New South Wales c. 1961: 78) This requirement was generally unpopular (O'Farrell, P. UNSW A Portrait: 90) and was eventually removed by Council on 9 November 1970. (resolution 70/221) On 9 May 1966 Council decided that the Department of History and Philosophy of Science would become its own independent school with Professor J B Thornton becoming the foundation professor of History and Philosophy of Science and head of school. (resolution 66/86) Professor Thornton had also been foundation professor of Philosophy at the university. (59/182) On 11 May 1987 Council decided to change the name of the school to the School of Science and Technology Studies effective from 1 January 1988 (resolution 87/52). The rationale was that it reflected a broadening of activities encompassing history and philosophy of science, social studies of science and technology, and science and technology policy. (Uniken 17 July 1987: 2) At the Council meeting on 22 July 2002 Professor McConkey, President of the Academic Board, reported that the School of Science and Technology Studies wished to revert to its former name, the School of History and Philosophy of Science, as its current name was not meaningful to school-leavers and undergraduates. Council approved the change (resolution CL002/62). In 2006 the School of History and Philosophy of Science described its role as follows: Our course structure uniquely integrates the traditional HPS areas of history and philosophy of science, technology and medicine with contemporary issues in environmental studies, technology policy and the history and politics of contemporary biosciences. HPS offers critical perspectives on science, technology and environment for undergraduate science as well as humanities and social science students. The international research profile of the School is particularly high in the history and sociology of science, eco-humanities and philosophy of mind/cognitive studies.
