    The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.     This series contains the handbooks of the Faculty of Science / Faculties of Biological Science and Science / Sciences / Science. Unlike all other faculty handbooks, this series contains a combination of faculty / board courses - at various times including the courses of the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Biological Science, Board of Studies in Science / Science & Mathematics, Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Science & Technology. Each item is a typed, paper-bound volume, which were released on a yearly basis and contains information about the courses available in the faculty, including subject descriptions. Prior to 1960, some of this information had been contained in the university calendar. From 1976 copies of the handbook are also included in the bound versions of the university calendar. From 2002 this series of faculty handbooks were replaced by a new series of Undergraduate and Postgraduate handbooks.

    The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in principle by Council on 22nd January, 1968 (resolution 68/19i). At its 8th July, 1968 meeting, Council then approved the formal operation of the Faculty from 1st July, 1968 (resolution 68/108). Initially administered by Dean Professor B. J. Ralph, the Faculty commenced life with six Schools - Applied Psychology, Biochemistry, Biological Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. The Faculty met for the first time on 29th July, 1968. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). Finally, on 2nd December, 1996, Council disestablished the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     The Council agreed to the formation of the Academic Board at its 2nd February, 1987 meeting (resolution 87/13a). The Board's establishment became more official on 14th September, 1987, with Council approving changes to Chapter III of the by-laws that put the Academic Board in place of the Professorial Board as the senior academic body of the University (resolution 87/99c). The Academic Board formally began its operations from 1st July, 1988. Under the by-laws (III, 1), its members were: a) the Chancellor b) the Deputy Chancellor c) the Vice-Chancellor d) the Academic Registrar e) the persons appointed by the Council to be the deans of the faculties, the Rector, University College, Australian Defence Force Academy and the Director, Australian Graduate School of Management f) the persons elected to the chairs of the faculties, of the Academic Board of the University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, and of boards of studies having the status or responsibilities of faculties g) a Pro-Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Vice-Chancellor h) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time professors of the University i) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time non-professorial members of the academic staff j) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a degree of bachelor, elected by and from the undergraduate students k) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a higher degree or graduate diploma, elected by and from the postgraduate students l) such other persons as the Council may appoint after considering the advice of the Academic Board. The Board continued on similar lines to the Professorial Board, with the Academic Board having the responsibility of furthering and co-ordinating the work of the faculties and board of studies and of encouraging scholarship and research, and with advising the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters of policy relating to the academic activities and the academic structure and development of the University (III, 2, a). The by-laws also dictated the election of a President and Deputy President from the members of the Board (III, 10, 1). The Academic Board held its first meeting on 5th July, 1988. At this meeting Professor D. J. Anderson was elected the first President and Dr J. Y. Morrison first Deputy President of the Board. Four Standing Committees were established - the Policy Advisory Committee, the Postgraduate Studies Committee, the Undergraduate Studies Committee and an Academic Planning & Services Committee (resolution 88/21). An Agenda Committee was also formed (resolution 88/20). In 1996 changes were made to the By-laws that affected the Academic Board. The number of members rose, with the two Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Dean of the Australian Graduate School of Management added to the Board (4, 48). Under the new by-laws (49, 1) the Board's functions are: a) to be the principal academic body of the University; and b) to further and co-ordinate the work of the faculties, boards of studies and other academic units, and to encourage teaching, scholarship and research; and c) to advise the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters relating to teaching, scholarship and research within the University; and d) to consider and report on matters referred to it by the Council or by the Vice-Chancellor; and e) to have such functions of the Council as the Council may, from time to time, delegate to it. As well, along with the President, there were now two Deputy Presidents elected (50, 1). In 2013, the President of the Academic Board was Professor Prem Ramburuth, with Associate Professor David Cohen and Associate Professor Stephen Fortescue as Deputy Presidents. The Board also had seven Committees - Academic Board Advisory Committee, Committee on Research, Higher Degree Research Committee, Committee on Education, Postgraduate Coursework Committee, Undergraduate Studies Committee and the Pre-University and Alternative Education Committee.     This series consists of the subject files of the Dean of the Faculty of Science. The material is mainly typed and contained in manilla folders in alphabetical order. Although the items predominately relate to numerous issues affecting the Faculty of Science, it also includes some files from Deans from previous science faculties - including the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Science & Technology. These files were presumably passed on to the Dean of Science when the two latter faculties were merged to form a single Faculty of Science (2) on 1 July 2001. Currently the Archives holds items from this series for periods covering deans William O'Sullivan, Merilyn Sleigh, Colin Sutherland, Dennis Lincoln, Aldo Bagnara and Mike Archer.     At its meeting on 8 July 1968 Council approved the establishment of an Institute of Marine Science as proposed in a document presented dated 17th June 1968. The institute was founded to coordinate work in areas related to marine science in the faculties of Science, Biological Sciences, Applied Science and Engineering for the purposes of co-ordinating and encouraging activities in these disciplines and to represent the university at national and international level (resolution 68/138). At the same time Professor V. T. Buchwald was named as the institute's Acting Director, shortly afterwards Professor C. E. Wallington was appointed as its permanent Director. Professor Buchwald was a member of the selection committee considering applications for the position of director (Personnel Sub-Committee of Executive Committee of Council 10 March 1969). In 1973 Professor Wallington resigned from this post. As a result, on 10 September 1973, Council determined that while the Institute would continue to operate, its activities [would] be supervised by a Management Committee to be constituted by the Vice-Chancellor and Principal (resolution 73/188). At the 30 July 1986 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee a Centre for Marine Science was created within the faculties of Biological Sciences and Science to take over and expand upon the functions of the present Institute of Marine Sciences. Its main aim was to facilitate, co-ordinate and develop teaching and research across the university in the multidisciplinary area of marine science. Dr P. I. Dixon was appointed as the Centre's first Director. At the 9 March 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological Sciences' name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the faculties of Science and Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences were disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre became a centre of the newly formed Faculty of Life Sciences. On 3 February 1997 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & International) approved a change in name of the Centre to the Centre for Marine and Coastal Studies (file 972348). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date the Centre became a joint centre of the faculties of Engineering and Science.     On 9 September 1985 the School of Food Science & Technology was redesignated the Department of Food Science & Technology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96). The head of department was Professor Ron Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the School of Biological Technologies was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Food Science & Technology, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the Department of Food Science & Technology within the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, as well as its two departments of Biotechnology and Food Science & Technology, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c). Staff from the Department of Food Science & Technology were moved to the newly formed School of Chemical Sciences (resolution CL00184/eii).     Description
    The School of Applied Psychology had much of its roots in the Department of Applied Psychology of the Sydney Technical College, but it was only on 12 May 1952 that Council created a chair in this field (resolution 218). On 9 November 1953 J. F. Clark was appointed to this position and so the School of Applied Psychology in the Faculty of Science came into being on 1 January 1954 with Professor Clark at its head (resolution 369). On 14 May 1956 Council moved the school to the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (resolution 761). On 9 March 1959 the school was moved back to the Faculty of Science (Council resolution 59/56). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) and so the school became one of the first six schools within this new faculty. On 13 November 1972 the school was renamed the School of Psychology (Council resolution 72/224). At the 9 March 1987 meeting of Council the faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Psychology was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Psychology (resolution CL001/49).     On 9 September 1985 the School of Biological Technologies was created within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (Council resolution 85/96). It initially had two departments - the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Food Science & Technology. The first head of school was Professor Ronald Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the school was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences.
