    In 1969 the Australian Government appointed a committee of overseas experts headed by Dr Richard Cyert to advise on the future needs for graduate management in Australia. On 19 January 1970 Council endorsed the beginning of negotiations for the establishment of a national graduate school of business at the university (resolution 70/13). When the Cyert Committee submitted the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into postgraduate education for management in March 1970, it advised that the University of New South Wales was the university best placed to provide the desirable environment for a national business school of the highest quality. In August 1973 the Australian Government gave its agreement for the university to begin preliminary planning for the school and the university accepted the government's offer (10 September 1973 Council resolution 73/185). On 12 November 1973 Council created an interim board of management, who were to be responsible for planning the development of the new school (resolution 73/236). On 11 March 1974 the new school was named the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/24ii). On 11 November 1974 Professor Philip Brown was appointed as the foundation Professor of Management and Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/202). He took up the position on 1 January 1975 and the school began its first classes on 7 March 1977 (SRF - AGSM). On 1 June 1998 Council gave its approval to the merger of the AGSM with the University of Sydney's Graduate School of Business to form a new Australian Graduate School of Management as a joint venture between the two universities, effective from the first academic term in 1999 (resolution 98/38). On 11 November 2005 it was announced that the University of Sydney had decided to cease its participation in the AGSM joint venture with UNSW. Consequently AGSM reverted to being solely owned by UNSW (SRF - AGSM). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Australian Graduate School of Management, subject to the approval of the Academic Board. The Faculty was to be amalgamated with the Faculty of Commerce & Economics to form the new Faculty of Business. The Board approved this on 1 August 2006 (resolution AB06/91) and at the Board's 7 November 2006 meeting, it noted that the Faculty of Commerce & Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management should be considered to have ceased to have the functions and powers of faculties after [the first Faculty Board meeting of the Faculty of Business on Thursday 23 November 2006]' (resolution AB06/139). Thus the AGSM as a business unit ceased operations, although courses under the AGSM brand continued operation after this date within the Faculty of Business.     The Faculty of Business was established by Council on 3 July 2006 (resolution CL06/68), as a result of the proposed disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management. The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, with Professor Alec Cameron as Dean. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). In 2007 the faculty was comprised of the Australian Graduate School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Banking & Finance, School of Business Law & Taxation, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, Technology & Management, School of Marketing, School of Organisation & Management, School of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, the Industrial Relations Research Centre and the Korea-Australasia Research Centre. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.     The Board of Studies in Taxation was established by Council on 5th November, 1990 (resolution CL90/95biii). At the initial meeting of the Board of Studies on 21st December, 1990, it was determined that the Board would be responsible for the development of courses in the Australian Taxation Studies (ATAX) Program, the supervision of teaching and the conduct of examinations and the formulation of policy on such allied matters as qualifications for admission and requirements for student progression. The first Presiding Member of the Board was Professor Y. F. R. Gribch. On 25th August, 1997, Council approved a change in status of the Board and it therefore became a Board within the Faculty of Law (resolution CL 97/66b), therefore reporting through the Faculty to the Academic Board. As a result the Board was no longer serviced by the Secretariat and it was no longer necessary to have a Registrar's Nominee present. On 15 May 2006 Council approved the replacement of the Board of Studies in Taxation with the Australian School of Taxation (resolution CL06/36/6). On 7 September 2010 the Academic Board recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and President of the Academic Board approve the disestablishment of the Australian School of Taxation and the School of Business Law and Taxation, and, as a concomitant action, approve the establishment of the Australian School of Taxation and Business law within the Australian School of Business, effective 1 January 2011 (resolution AB10/101).     The Faculty of Commerce was formed in principle by Council at its meeting on 12 July 1954 (resolution 431i). The Faculty was then officially launched at the 11th March, 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37). Professor David Culloden Rowan was the first Dean of the Faculty, with the initial schools being Accountancy, Economics and Hospital Administration. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty occurred on 5th June, 1957. In 1986 - 1987 a Committee organised by the Vice-Chancellor conducted a review of the Faculty. As a result, at the Council meeting on 11th July, 1988 the name of the Faculty was altered to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, subject to the approval of the Academic Board. The Faculty was to be amalgamated with the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the new Faculty of Business.     On 7 September 2010 the Academic Board recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and President of the Academic Board approve the disestablishment of the Australian School of Taxation and the School of Business Law and Taxation, and, as a concomitant action, approve the establishment of the Australian School of Taxation and Business law within the Australian School of Business, effective 1 January 2011 (resolution AB10/101). This was approved on 20 September 2010 (file 2002/2060). The Australian School of Taxation and Business Law thus commenced operations from 1 January 2011. The first Head of School was Professor John Taylor. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.     On 21 June 2004 Council resolved to disestablish the schools of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour and International Business within the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and established a new school - thus the School of Organisation and Management was created (resolution CL04/81). The first head of school was Associate Professor Lucy Taksa. The new school's research and teaching expertise would encompass the fields of business strategy, employment relations, international business, management (including human resource management, cross-cultural and diversity management, and management consulting) and organisational behaviour (http://www.orgmanagement.unsw.edu.au/) Accessed 11 September 2006). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The School of Organisation and Management thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). At its meeting on 6 December 2011, the Academic Board resolved (resolution AB11/152) that it be recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of Academic Board approve the integration of the School of Strategy & Entrepreneurship into the School of Organisation & Management, and, as a concomitant action, the disestablishment of the School of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, and the change of name of the School of Organisation and Management to the School of Management, effective 1 January 2012. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014. On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The School thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). Under the University's agreement with the Minister for Education it undertook to establish an interim board of management for the school to make recommendations to the University Council on the constitution and structure of the school and take appropriate steps to appoint a person to head up the school. On 12 November 1973 Council created the interim board of management (resolution 73/236). The Board was initially called the Interim Board of Management for the Management School. On 11 March 1974 the new school was named the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/24ii) and from its second meeting Board was titled the Interim Board of Management of the Australian Graduate School of Management On 11 November 1974 Professor Philip Brown was appointed as the foundation Professor of Management and Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/202).     On 12 July 1954 Council in principle approved the formation of the Faculty of Commerce and at the same time resolved to establish a foundation chair in accountancy (resolution 431iii). On 11 July 1955 (resolution 599) Council accepted the appointment of E. B. Smyth to this chair and when he took up his position on 29 August 1955, the School of Accountancy was formed with Professor Smyth as the first head of school. The establishment of the Faculty of Commerce was officially approved at the 11th March 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37), with Accounting as one of the faculty's first three schools. As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time all departments within the School of Accountancy were made either schools in their own right or independent departments. This included the Department of Accounting - and as a result of it becoming a school, it effectively replaced the School of Accountancy from this date. In 2006 the School of Accounting was headed by Professor Wai Fong Chua. As a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, the school became part of the Faculty of Business from 23 November 2006.
