    On 8 December 1952 Council resolved that the NSW University of Technology Sports' Association be the approved organisation to control and sponsor sport within the university (resolution 278). At the same meeting the Association's constitution was approved subject to review by the Parliamentary Draftsman, which listed the following objectives for the Association: a) to encourage, foster, promote, develop, extend and govern amateur sport within the university b) to establish amateur sporting clubs within the university c) to co-ordinate, encourage, assist and support the sporting activities of the various constituent clubs and to represent them in sporting competitions, matches and relations both within the university and with other sporting organisations d) to provide and maintain grounds, playing fields, materials, equipment and other facilities for amateur sport within the university e) to undertake and implement in such manner as it thinks fit such other matters related to any or all of the foregoing objects as may from time to time be deemed expedient by the General Committee. On 12 March 1953 a general meeting of students was held on the subject of the Sports Association, chaired by Professor J. P. Baxter. At that meeting the formation of the Sports Association was approved and office bearers elected, including the first president of the Association, Michael Kefford (file 00371228). The first meeting of the Association's General Committee took place on 1 April 1953. Following the change in name of the university on 7 October 1958, the name of the Association was changed to the University of New South Wales Sports Association. On 24 July 2007 a meeting of members of the Sports Association was held. At this meeting two motions were passed. The first was that the notion of motion to dissolve the Sports Association shall be given to the Honorary Secretary by the General Committee in meeting with the item on the agenda not less than fourteen clear days prior to an extraordinary general meeting which shall be convened with the item Dissolution of the Sports Association the only item on the agenda...If such a dissolution is agreed to by no-less than three quarters of those present and entitled to vote, the Sports Association shall inform the University Council and the Vice-Chancellor shall take control of the affairs, property, finances, staff and other responsibilities of the Sports Association. The second was that that the Sports Association approve the executive of an agreement with the university that will formally allow the transfer of the Sports Association's operations and assets to the UNSW Sport & Recreation with the provision of general commitments including future minimum funding at or around 1 September 2007 upon such terms and conditions as approved by the General Committee. This date was amended to 25 December 2007 before being passed (SRF - Sport & Recreation). This was reported at the 25 October 2007 meeting of the Student Affairs Committee (resolution SAC07/07) and as a result the Sports Association appears to have ceased to exist at the end of 2007 with its functions being transferred to the newly formed Sport and Recreation department. The earlier dated items in the series focus on the rules and constitution of the Sports Association, while in the later years the booklets became mainly a tool for promoting the Sports Association's paid courses. Mostly the booklets were released on a yearly basis, but in latter years they were often released on a sessional basis.\r\n\r\nThe Archives' holdings of this series are incomplete. No items are held for the years 1965, 1988 - 1991 (session 1), 1995 or 1996.

    On 6 November 2006 Council resolved to approve the delegation of authority to the Student Affairs Committee with the agreement of the Vice-Chancellor, to approve amendments to the constitutions of UNSW Union, the Union Student Guild, the Postgraduate Board, the College of Fine Arts Students' Association and the UNSW Sports Association (where such amendments are requested by the governing body of the relevant student organisation), and such other actions and agreements necessary to give effect to the winding up of the existing student organisations and the transition to a new student organisation, and to a new model for delivery of sport and other student services for UNSW in 2007 (resolution CL06/87). In the first week of session one in 2007, all UNSW students were informed by email of the intention to integrate the functions of the Sports Association and the Lifestyle Centre (Unigym) into a new department of Sport and Recreation (25 October 2007 Student Affairs Committee papers). At the 25 October 2007 meeting of the Student Affairs Committee it was noted that it was anticipated that formal transfer to the new department would be completed by the end of the year. Mr Mark Lockie would be appointed as the new General Manager of UNSW's new Sport and Recreation department on 29 October. The Sport and Recreation section was initially part of the division of the Chief Operating Officer. Following the departure of the Chief Operating Officer in September 2008, Sport and Recreation was moved to the division of the Executive Director, University Services. In 2010 the General Manager of Sport and Recreation remained Mark Lockie. While Sport and Recreation remained the responsibility of the Vice-President, University Services, the unit as such was soon disbanded. In 2013 the operations of the UNSW Fitness and Aquatic Centre were outsourced and run by the YMCA NSW while UNSW Sport encompassing the management of Sports Clubs, UNSW University Games teams as well as the facilitation of sports facilities such as Village Green, David Phillips Field, Tarban Creek and the Sam Cracknell Pavilion were transferred to Arc in July 2013. The material is typed and maintained in manila folders. The documents are arranged according to the date of each meeting, with each AGM indicated by a tab. This material duplicates some of the papers held in Series 2551 and 2553.

    This series consists of the minutes, agendas and papers of the General Committee Meetings of the New South Wales University of Technology Sports Association / University of New South Wales Sports Association. The material is typed and is arranged chronologically. Within the content date range of the material, most minutes and agendas are held in the Archives, including those for Special General Committee meetings. Signed copies of meetings are held for some of the earlier meetings. The meetings were usually held once a month and were to be attended by representatives from the Council, Sports Association and from each sports club. Minutes, agendas and papers from Annual General Meetings have been removed and located in SERIES2551.

    Description
    This series contains minutes and agendas of the Annual General Meetings of the Sports Association. The material is typed and arranged chronologically in a manila folder. The meetings discuss the happenings within the Association over the preceding year, including significant projects and financial position, and also include elections. Some of the earlier minutes are signed. The Archives' holdings of the series are incomplete, although minutes for most of the meetings are held.

    Description
    This series consists of publications from the Office of the New South Wales University of Technology (1953 - 1958) / University of New South Wales (1958 - 2007) Sports Association. Each item is either a spiral-bound or paper-bound volume. They have generally been published by the Australian Universities Sport Association or the Australian Universities Sports Federation, and have been received by the University of New South Wales Sports Association. This collection is quite random, but reflects the activities of the Association.

    The first meeting of the Interfaculty Sports Club was held on 19 March 1965 with representatives from each faculty invited to attend. The purpose of the Club was to raise awareness of sporting opportunities for students in order to increase participation throughout the University. The Club covered many different sports. In 1970 (following a less than impressive year prior), the Club played only Men's Judo, Rifle Shooting, Men's and Women's Swimming, Rugby Union and Soccer. This level of activity was seen as disappointing by the office bearers. In 1971, it was proposed that the Club be converted into a sub-committee of the Sports Association, because its general function was different from other sporting clubs. Its success in encouraging student participation amongst people who would not otherwise play competitive sports was noted. It appears that the Club ceased around 1973.

    Following the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) by the Commonwealth Government from 1 July 2006, the University Union, Student Guild and COFA Students' Association merged together to form the Arc from the beginning of 2007, as approved by Council at its 6 November 2006 meeting (resolution CL06/87). Launched in Orientation Week 2007, the services provided by the Arc included: - Student Club resources and support - Advocacy & legal services - Roundhouse bar and entertainment programs - Commercial offerings including Zippy's stores, the Campus Art Store and the Graduation & Gift store - Student publications including Tharunka, Blitz, Zing Tycoon and the Student Diary - Student activities and events such a Foundation Day, O-Week and Oktoberfest - Development opportunities and volunteering programs including the Yellow Shirt program and creative development courses (news@unsw, 29 January 2007). The first Chair of the Arc Board was Kate Bartlett, while Arc's first Managing Director was Jodieann Dawe.     Description
    The Archery Club was formed during 1977. On 25 July, 1977, the Executive Committee of the University of New South Wales Sports Association discussed the Draft Constitution for the proposed Archery Club to allow it to become a member club of the Association. It was to be raised at the Sports Association General Committee Meeting on 7 September, 1977, and appears to have been approved then or shortly after. By 27 February, 1978, the Club was an official member of the Sport Association, so it must have been approved prior to this date.
