    Description
    The Asia-Australia Institute was established as a major development linking Australia and its Asian neighbours at the 4 June 1990 meeting of Council (resolution CL90/47). Dr Stephen Fitzgerald was later appointed to the position of Director of the Institute and commenced work on 3 September 1990 (Council papers, 17 September 1990). Initially the Director reported to the Institute's Management Committee, which was accountable to the Vice-Chancellor for the operational running of the Institute. (file 892709). From the beginning of July 1992, however, the Institute was restructured and the Director position was renamed Director-General, became more strategic and reported directly to the Vice-Chancellor. At the same time the new operational position of Executive Director was created, which was to report to the newly formed Executive Board (previously the Management Committee). This position was subsequently filled by Larry Strange in January 1993. A more strategic Advisory Council, which met annually, was also established for the Institute. At the 27 July 1993 meeting of the Executive Board, the Executive Director's position was renamed Director and the Director-General's position was renamed Chair. During its time in existence the Institute organised a number of programs, including the Asia Leaders' Forum (1993 - 2001), the Coolum Forum (1999 - 2002), the Australia in Asia Series (1997 - 2003), The Asia Lectures (1991- c.2002), the Australia-Indonesia Young Leaders' Dialogue (2002 - 2003), the Asia Skills Program (1992 - 2003), the Axiss APEC Future Economic Leaders Think-Tank (2001 - 2003), the Asia Young Leaders' Program (1993 - 1999), the Malaysia-Australia Dialogue (1995 - 2000) and the Gwinganna Forum (1995 - 1998) (Report to the Reference Group on the Future of the AAI, 5 June 2002, file 2002/3420). Following Professor Fitzgerald's retirement at the end of 2003, the Asia-Australia Institute was absorbed into the International Advancement Program within the Division of Institutional Advancement from 1 January 2004 and thus effectively ceased to exist (file 2003/0294).     This series contains audio cassette tapes from the Asia-Australia Institute. Each item is an audio cassette tape recording of an event organised by the Institute. These include, among others, the launch of the Institute, the Asia Lectures, the Asia Leaders' Forums, the Asia Young Leaders' Forums, the Malaysia-Australia Dialogues, the Australia-Indonesia Young Leaders' Dialogues and the Australia in Asia lectures. The Archives' holdings of this series are located in the A/V collection.

    This series contains transcripts of the Asia Lectures of the Asia-Australia Institute. Each item is a paper-bound booklet or loose pieces of paper. As outlined in a brochure advertising the first lecture, the Asia Lecture series is a major program designed by the Asia-Australia Institute to provide a platform for members of regional decision-making elites to explore ideas about Asia beyond the immediacy of present policies and plans, and to stimulate those who attend to become involved in the development of the intellectual framework necessary for the creation of an Asian community. In a 2002 report they were described as a prestigious series of dinner lectures presented by Australian and Asian leaders at the most senior levels of government. They provide a forum for the public airing and discussion of the issues of future and contemporary Asia, to an audience of senior business, government, academic, media and industry leaders (Report to the Reference Group on the Future of the AAI, 5 June 2002, file 2002/3420). The Archives' holdings of this series are incomplete, as a transcript for lecture 3 and lectures post June 1998 - are not held. Some post-1998 Asia Lectures were, however, published in the institute's The Asia-Australia Papers (V1107). There are also audio recordings of some lectures in series 1442 and video recordings of others in series 1443.

    The Faculty of Business was established by Council on 3 July 2006 (resolution CL06/68), as a result of the proposed disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management. The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, with Professor Alec Cameron as Dean. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). In 2007 the faculty was comprised of the Australian Graduate School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Banking & Finance, School of Business Law & Taxation, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, Technology & Management, School of Marketing, School of Organisation & Management, School of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, the Industrial Relations Research Centre and the Korea-Australasia Research Centre. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.     The Advisory Council of the Asia-Australia Institute appears to have had its beginnings in a letter dated 31 October 1990 and sent to the Vice-Chancellor by Director Stephen Fitzgerald as part of the setting up of the Institute, as Fitzgerald proposes the establishment of an International Advisory Committee (file 892709). By 1991 this appears to have become known as the International Committee and finally by the 4 May 1992 meeting of the Institute's Management Committee, the Advisory Council had come into being. The inaugural meeting of the Council was held on 15 July 1992 with the Hon. Bill Hayden as Chairperson. At this meeting it was determined that the Institute sought from members of the Council: 1. General support for the Institute and its programs 2. Introductions and the opening of doors for the substantive objectives of the Institute 3. Contribution of ideas and critical scrutiny of the Institute's work. From 1993 the Advisory Council meetings were held in conjunction with the Asia Leaders' Forum meetings on an annual basis. A review of the Council's membership in 1998 produced the following terms of reference: 1. To provide advice on matters relating to the emergence of an Asian community and Australia's participation in it 2. To raise and provide advice on regional matters which shape the Institute's activities 3. To discuss the policies and work of the Institute and advise on strategic directions 4. To assist the Institute by providing names and introductions to potential benefactors and participants in its programs 5. To attend the annual Council meeting 6. To serve a three year term after which Councillors become Senior Advisors of the Institute. The last meeting of the Council appears to have taken place on 21 April 2001.     This series contains the Proceedings of the Asia Leaders' Forums of the Asia-Australia Institute. Each item in the series is a paper-bound booklet, containing the proceedings and report of the Asia Leader's Forum. The Forum was held annually and (as outlined in the introduction to the 1995 proceedings) is an intellectual or 'think-tank' Forum for a small number of political, business and other leaders from the Asian region. The objective is to give high level regional leaders a context for private intellectual engagement, in which to generate and test new ideas on issues of fundamental importance to the region's future. In a 2002 report the forum was described as an annual small-scale private high level meeting of regional leaders from government, business, the media, education, research institutes and NGOs, which discuss major issues that will shape the future of the Asian region, including the development of regionalism and regional institutions. The Institute's Advisory Council also met in conjuction with the forums (Report to the Reference Group on the Future of the AAI, 5 June 2002, file 2002/3420). As outlined in the first issue the papers included presentations and other papers from our regional forums, The Australia in Asia series, The Asia Lectures and other research and policy programs. In a 2002 report, the Papers were described as representing a broad group of thinkers from government, business, the media, NGOs and education, from Australia and the other countries of East Asia, who participate in and contribute to Asia-Australia Institute programs (Report to the Reference Group on the Future of the AAI, 5 June 2002, file 2002/3420).     This series contains the Working Papers of the Australian-Asian Perceptions Project jointly produced by the Asia-Australia Institute and the Academy of Social Sciences in Australia. The series consists of nine individually paper-bound items, which have then been bound into a single booklet. As outlined in the introduction to each paper, the papers were published to ensure Australia's full participation in the developing 'Asian' community, [as] Australians need to acquire not only knowledge of Asian socieites, but also an appreciation of the ideas and values that underpin Australian approaches to the world.     This series consists of the correspondence & programs of the Australia in Asia Seminar Series of the Asia-Australia Institute The material is typed and arranged in a manilla folder in chronological order. The Seminar Series was generally held on a monthly basis and was intended as a discussion of fundamental issues arising from Australia's future in Asia. The correspondence includes planning and invitations to speakers, as well as programs for the seminars. The Archives does not hold any material in this series for any of the 1997 or 2002 - 2003 seminars. Audio recordings of the seminars are available in series 1442.     The Executive Board of the Asia-Australia Institute was established by Director Stephen Fitzgerald as part of the setting up of the Institute. In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor dated 31 October 1990, the Board's responsibilities were noted as: 1. To be responsible to the Vice-Chancellor for the overall direction of the Institute and to provide him with advice on matters of policy, business planning and overall financial management and links between the activities of the Institute and related activities elsewhere in the university 2. To advise the Director on matters referred to it by him (file 892709). The first meeting was held on 5 April 1991 with Professor Chris Fell as the Chair. At this meeting it was determined that the name of the Board was to be changed to the Management Committee. From the beginning of July 1992, however, the Institute was restructured and the Committee's name was changed back to the Executive Board. At the same time an Executive Director was appointed to the Institute and so a third responsibility for the Board became to liaise with the Executive Director to ensure the effective and efficient management of the Asia-Australia Institute. The Vice-Chancellor also became chair of the Board (Executive Board Minutes 22 July 1992). At the 27 July 1993 meeting of the Executive Board, the Executive Director's position was renamed Director and the Director-General's position was renamed Chair. The Chair of the Institute also became Co-Chair of the Board along with the Vice-Chancellor. It is unclear as to the exact date of the final meeting of the Board, but it had completed its operations before the closure of the Institute at the end of 2003.
