    The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in principle by Council on 22nd January, 1968 (resolution 68/19i). At its 8th July, 1968 meeting, Council then approved the formal operation of the Faculty from 1st July, 1968 (resolution 68/108). Initially administered by Dean Professor B. J. Ralph, the Faculty commenced life with six Schools - Applied Psychology, Biochemistry, Biological Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. The Faculty met for the first time on 29th July, 1968. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). Finally, on 2nd December, 1996, Council disestablished the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     On 9 September 1985 the School of Food Science & Technology was redesignated the Department of Food Science & Technology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96). The head of department was Professor Ron Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the School of Biological Technologies was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Food Science & Technology, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the Department of Food Science & Technology within the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, as well as its two departments of Biotechnology and Food Science & Technology, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c).     The Faculty of Science was established as one of the first three faculties of the University at the Council meeting on 8th May, 1950 (resolution 54). Professor John Philip Baxter became the Dean of the new Faculty, which initially contained three Schools - Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering. At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     The Department of Applied Chemistry dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. On 10 November, 1949 Professor A. E. Alexander took up the position of the first head of department. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Applied Chemistry became one of the inaugural departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Applied Chemistry came into existence (resolution 153). The School of Applied Chemistry appears to have had its name changed to the School of Chemistry sometime in late 1957. Although the school had sometimes been referred to as the School of Chemistry before this date, on 11 November 1957 Council authorised a split of the Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel, with the new panels becoming the Chemistry Advisory Panel and the Chemical Engineering & Food Technology Advisory Panel (resolution 57/163a). This split seems to have coincided with the final definitive change to the school's name. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Chemistry was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Chemistry (resolution CL001/49). At its meeting on 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Chemistry. Together with the Department of Food Science & Technology, the school's staff were moved to the newly formed School of Chemical Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) - with microbiology becoming one of the first six schools within the faculty. At the 9 March 1987 meeting of Council the faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). On 5 November 1990 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Microbiology & Immunology (resolution CL90/95). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Microbiology & Immunology was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Microbiology & Immunology (resolution CL001/49).     At the 13/21 July 1987 meetings of Council, the amalgamation of the schools of Botany and Zoology to form the School of Biological Science was approved, to be effective from 1 January 1988. The First Year Biology Unit was also incorporated into the new school (resolution 87/69d). The first head of school was Professor David Sandeman. At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Biological Science was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Biological Science (resolution CL001/49).     Dr Bernhard J. Ralph took up duties on 3 January 1950 as a Lecturer in Biochemistry within the Department of Applied Chemistry. In September 1950 Dr Ralph was promoted to senior lecturer. At the same time a small Department of Biological Sciences was created with Dr Ralph at its head within the larger Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Science (BRF - B. J. Ralph, Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel 22 July 1952 papers - file 00046006). On 10 September 1951 the Department of Applied Chemistry was re-designated as the School of Applied Chemistry, with the Department of Biological Sciences remaining a part of the new school (Council resolution 153). On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences was changed into a School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science with Dr Ralph becoming an associate professor and head of school (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments - biochemistry, botany, microbiology and zoology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). Consequently the School of Biological Sciences essentially ceased to exist from this date.     The Faculty of Science & Technology was created by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 8th July, 1997 with Associate Professor A. H. Dooley as the Presiding Member. At this time, under Dean Colin Sutherland, the Faculty contained six schools, four departments, three Centres, the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility and the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit. The Faculty of Science & Technology was disestablished by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 26th April, 2001.
