    Description
    On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences became the School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments, including the Department of Botany (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). Dr Mary Hindmarsh, lecturer in botany, was put in charge of principally promoting the department (file 00072525). On 12 March 1962 the creation of a foundation chair of botany was approved by Council (resolution 62/4) and on 9 September 1963 Professor H. N. Barber was appointed to this position (resolution 63/150), commencing on duty on 1 February 1964. On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108).     At the 13/21 July 1987 meetings of Council, the amalgamation of the schools of Botany and Zoology to form the School of Biological Science was approved, to be effective from 1 January 1988. The First Year Biology Unit was also incorporated into the new school (resolution 87/69d). The first head of school was Professor David Sandeman. At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Biological Science was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Biological Science (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Biological Science, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c).     The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in principle by Council on 22nd January, 1968 (resolution 68/19i). At its 8th July, 1968 meeting, Council then approved the formal operation of the Faculty from 1st July, 1968 (resolution 68/108). Initially administered by Dean Professor B. J. Ralph, the Faculty commenced life with six Schools - Applied Psychology, Biochemistry, Biological Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. The Faculty met for the first time on 29th July, 1968. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). Finally, on 2nd December, 1996, Council disestablished the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     Dr Bernhard J. Ralph took up duties on 3 January 1950 as a Lecturer in Biochemistry within the Department of Applied Chemistry. In September 1950 Dr Ralph was promoted to senior lecturer. At the same time a small Department of Biological Sciences was created with Dr Ralph at its head within the larger Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Science (BRF - B. J. Ralph, Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel 22 July 1952 papers - file 00046006). On 10 September 1951 the Department of Applied Chemistry was re-designated as the School of Applied Chemistry, with the Department of Biological Sciences remaining a part of the new school (Council resolution 153). On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences was changed into a School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science with Dr Ralph becoming an associate professor and head of school (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments - biochemistry, botany, microbiology and zoology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). Consequently the School of Biological Sciences essentially ceased to exist from this date. On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). At the same time the department was redesignated the School of Zoology and became one of the first six schools within the new faculty.     The University of New South Wales Press is a not-for-profit company under the control of the University of New South Wales. Its main activities are book publishing, representation and distribution services, and retail on the Kensington campus. The origins of the New South Wales University Press date back to the early days of the University, where an informal version of the press was started by the Students' Union as a way of generating revenue. On 13 March, 1961, Council discussed the terms of operation for the Press. It was decided that the Board would consist of ten members; five members nominated by the University Council and the remaining five by the Board of the Students' Union. The Constitution was later amended in 1998, so that the Board would be entirely nominated by the University. The New South Wales University Press was formally incorporated on 22 December, 1961, and began its operations on 9 March, 1962. Publications were initially sold from the Union Store in Ultimo. Alan MacDonald was the first general manager of the Press. In 1964 UNSW provided the Press with new premises in the former Randwick Tramway Workshops in Govett St. In 1974, UNSW Assistant Registrar, Douglas Howie took on the role of Press General Manager. This was initially on a part-time basis, until 1979 when he moved into the role full-time. In 1981 the Press moved its offices to 32 Botany Street, Randwick, with the Govett St site continuing to function as a warehouse for the Press. In 1993, the New South Wales University Press was renamed as the University of New South Wales Press to reflect the corporate identity of its parent company. At this time, the Press also followed the example of the University and adopted the abbreviated title 'UNSW Press' for trading purposes. In 1995, following Doug Howie’s retirement, Peter Sharpe took on the role of Press Managing Director. In 1997, Dr Robin Derricourt is appointed the Press’s new Managing Director and establishes the Press’s new UNIREPS initiative. In 1998, the Press offices move to 45 Beach St, Coogee, on the Cliffbrook Campus. In 2009, UNSW Press’s Randwick warehouse was closed, with customer service and distribution outsourced to TL Distribution in Moorebank. In 2010, Kathy Bail joined UNSW Press as its new Chief Executive Officer. The sales and distribution division, Unireps, was rebranded as NewSouth Books. And, in 2011, the publishing division became known as NewSouth Publishing. New logos were introduced for the imprints UNSW Press and NewSouth.
