    The Faculty of Architecture was established by Council on 8th May, 1950 (resolution 54). Under Dean F. E. Towndrow the Faculty included just the single School of Architecture and met for the first time on 25th July, 1950. At the meeting of Council on 13th September, 1993, the name of the Faculty was changed to the Faculty of the Built Environment (resolution CL93/73g). The list of Deans below was compiled for an enquiry in 2011.     On 17 January 1977 Council gave approval in principle to the establishment of the Graduate School of the Built Environment within the Faculty of Architecture, with the determination of the date from which the school would become operational delegated to the Vice-Chancellor (resolution 77/4). At the 19 July 1978 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee, approval was given for the school to become operative on 24 July 1978. Professor J. M. Freeland took up the position as head of school (file 028479). On 12 December 1991 a restructure of the school was approved by the Vice-Chancellor. As a result, the school's existing academic staff were deployed elsewhere in the faculty, the dean carried out the functions of a head of school and the school was to be concerned with the co-ordination and development of multi-disciplinary activities in the faculty, which will be undertaken by staff who are formally members of other schools in the faculty. At the same time an Advisory Committee was created, which was to assist the Dean with development and delivery of multi-disciplinary activities in the school (file 028479). At the meeting of Council on 13th September, 1993, the name of the faculty was changed to the Faculty of the Built Environment (resolution CL93/73g). On 25 August 1997 Council disestablished all schools and departments within the Faculty of the Built Environment - including the Graduate School of the Built Environment - and created in their place a single School of the Built Environment effective from 31 December 1997 (resolution CL97/66/9c).     This series incorporates the agendas, papers and minutes of the Faculty of Architecture / Faculty of the Built Environment, as well as the Faculty's Executive Committee and Higher Degree Committee, which were created as part of the revision to Chapter IV of the University's By-Laws under Council resolution 64/3 on 9th March, 1964. The series reflects the Faculty's change of name from the Faculty of Architecture to the Faculty of the Built Environment on 13th September, 1993 (Council resolution CL93/73g). The material is typed and is maintained in manila folders. Documents are generally arranged in chronological order, but occasionally minutes and papers from a later meeting date have been placed prior to items from an earlier meeting. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Faculty. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Faculty. A large proportion of minutes have been signed as approved by the Chairman at a subsequent Faculty meeting. For some meetings, however, particularly in the first twenty years of the Faculty, the Archives only holds copies of the minutes - not the official signed versions. At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee (and optionally a Higher Degree Committee) and a Faculty Education Committee (or optionally an Undergraduate Education Committee & Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution CL99/81). Consequently this series ceased to be created at the end of 1999.

    On 17 August 1989 the Vice-Chancellor approved the creation of the Department of Industrial Design. The department was to be part of the Graduate School of the Built Environment for a period not exceeding four years, and thereafter within an independent department or a school of industrial design, as is then deemed appropriate (file 891253). The first head of the department was John Redmond. On 29 June 1992 Council approved the establishment of an independent Department of Industrial Design (resolution CL92/38b). At the meeting of Council on 13th September, 1993, the name of the faculty was changed to the Faculty of the Built Environment (resolution CL93/73g). On 25 August 1997 Council disestablished all schools and departments within the Faculty of the Built Environment - including the Department of Industrial Design - and created in their place a single School of the Built Environment effective from 31 December 1997 (resolution CL97/66/9c).     Description
    The School of the Built Environment was created as the single school within the Faculty of the Built Environment on 25 August 1997 as a result of Council disestablishing all previous schools in the faculty effective 31 December 1997 (resolution CL97/66/9c). The school was initially headed by Professor Jon Lang and consisted of the Architecture, Building Construction Management, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Landscape Architecture and Planning & Urban Development programs.     On 16 January 1978 Council re-classified the Department of Landscape Architecture as the School of Landscape Architecture with Professor Peter Spooner as Head of School. (resolution 78/7 - 26445; Focus 31 May 1978: 1) On 13 September 1993 the name of the faculty was changed from the Faculty of Architecture to the Faculty of the Built Environment (resolution CL93/73g). At its meeting on 25 August 1997 Council resolved to disestablish the School of Landscape Architecture along with the Schools of Architecture, Building, and Planning and Urban Development, the Graduate School of the Built Environment and the Department of Industrial Design within the Faculty of the Built Environment, effective from 31 December 1997 and establish as of 31 December 1997 the School of the Built Environment.     Description
    This series consists of FBE Interviews - a publication by the Faculty of the Built Environment. The publication is type-written and contains reminiscences of former academics from the Faculty of the Built Environment. Currently the only item in the series is Volume 1, which was compiled and edited by Paul-Alan Johnson and Susan Lorne-Johnson and published in August 2007. The people interviewed in this volume are Paul Reid, Elias Duek-Cohen, John Haskell, Libby Howard, Paul-Alan Johnson, Peter Proudfoot, Peter Reynolds, Gareth Roberts, Barry Wollaston and Ken Wyatt.

    The Faculty Board & Standing Committee of the Faculty of the Built Environment was created at the 13th December, 1999 meeting of Council, when changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee (and optionally a Higher Degree Committee) and a Faculty Education Committee (or optionally an Undergraduate Education Committee & Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution CL99/81). At this time, there was also a division of duties between the Secretariat and the Faculty, whereby the Secretariat was only responsible for the Board & Standing Committees - the rest of the Committees were left up to the Faculty. Consequently this series only holds items from the Board & Standing Committees. The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders with documents generally arranged in chronological order. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting.
