    On 3 November 1992 the Academic Board endorsed the establishment of the Centre for Thrombosis and Vascular Research within the Faculty of Medicine (resolution 92/59ii). This was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 25 November 1992. The aim of the Centre was to coordinate and develop research into the causes and treatment of occlusive vascular disease and thrombosis (file 921732). The founding director of the Centre was Professor C. N. Chesterman. On 1 April 2003 the Academic Board recommended the change in name of the centre to the Centre for Vascular Research (resolution AB03/8). At the same time the Centre was restructured, bringing in collaborative researchers from the Australian National University and Monash University. On 16 February 2007 this collaboration was also extended to the University of Sydney (http://www.cvr.net.au/ - accessed 20 May 2008). On 21 July 2015 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the closure of the Centre (file 2013/17487). Controlling Organisation: UNSW - 25/11/1992-21/07/2015.

    Cystemix Pty Ltd was incorporated on 22 September 2002 and commenced operations on 31 March 2005. Gillian Turner was sole director before others were appointed in anticipation of commencing operations. John Wolfraad was appointed Chair of the board on 7 March 2005. Cystemix was a company for the commercialisation of cancer treatment technology, specifically the anti-angio-genesis agent developed by Professor Phil Hogg, from the UNSW based Centre for Thrombosis and Vascular Research. It works by preventing the formation of the blood vessels that feed cancer tumours. Dr Neil Donaghue was also part of the initial research. Cystemix was initially funded through a Convertible Note from NewSouth Innovations, for an amount up to $1.765 million. GSAO was the initial product developed, but it had inherent limitations on its effectiveness. A mimetic analogue, PENAO, was later developed and proved to be a much more effective anti-tumour agent. GSAO development began in 2000 with a Royalty and Services Agreement signed with Institute of Drug Technology (IDT). This was terminated in 2004 after disappointments with the commercialisation of the product. A Clinical Trials Agreement was signed by Cancer Research UK (CRUK) and Unisearch Ltd on 16 March 2004. CRUK began clinical trials of GSAO in December 2007, which were performed in the United Kingdom. Initial commercial interest came from Tyco International, who signed an exclusive licensing agreement for all four GSAO patents, worldwide, within the field of imaging. [Board Papers 23 November 2006]. Tyco, later Covidien, terminated the agreement in 2010. Cystemix received a COMET grant in 2009. Contingent on this, NSi signed a Deed with Cystemix to give the company certain rights over relevant IP. [Board papers 21 December 2009] Cystemix pursued venture capital investment in the period up until 2010, where the Archives’ records end, but were not able to secure funding. PENAO was assessed to be a more potentially lucrative and successful technology, and Cystemix continued developing it.     The Faculty of Medicine was formally approved by Council on 11th July, 1960 (resolution 60/62i). Functions within the Faculty had, however, already been in operation, with the first Dean, Professor F. F. Rundle, being appointed from 1st May, 1960, and the inaugural Faculty meeting taking place on 23rd June, 1960. The initial schools within the Faculty were Anatomy, Medicine, Pathology, Physiology and Surgery. In 2013 the Faculty of Medicine, administered by Dean Professor Peter Smith, included four Schools, five Clinical Schools and eighteen Centres.
