    On 12 July 1954 Council in principle approved the formation of the Faculty of Commerce and at the same time resolved to establish a foundation chair in Economics (resolution 431iii). On 14 November 1955 (resolution 651) Council accepted the appointment of D. C. Rowan to this chair and so when he took up his position on 1 June 1956, the School of Economics was formed with Professor Rowan as the first head of school. The formal establishment of the Faculty of Commerce was officially approved at the 11th March 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37), with Economics as one of the faculty's first three schools. As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 July 2006 Council proposed the amalgamation of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management into the newly formed Faculty of Business and consequently the School of Economics became part of this faculty (resolution CL06/68). The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, but by 18 June 2007 the name of the faculty was changed to the Australian School of Business at UNSW (Council resolution CL07/33). On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.     Description
    The Faculty of Commerce was formed in principle by Council at its meeting on 12 July 1954 (resolution 431i). The Faculty was then officially launched at the 11th March, 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37). Professor David Culloden Rowan was the first Dean of the Faculty, with the initial schools being Accountancy, Economics and Hospital Administration. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty occurred on 5th June, 1957. In 1986 - 1987 a Committee organised by the Vice-Chancellor conducted a review of the Faculty. As a result, at the Council meeting on 11th July, 1988 the name of the Faculty was altered to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, subject to the approval of the Academic Board. The Faculty was to be amalgamated with the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the new Faculty of Business. The Board approved this on 1 August 2006 (resolution AB06/91) and at the Board's 7 November 2006 meeting, it noted that the Faculty of Commerce & Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management should be considered to have ceased to have the functions and powers of faculties after [the first Faculty Board meeting of the Faculty of Business on Thursday 23 November 2006]' (resolution AB06/139).     Description
    The establishment of the Centre for Applied Economic Research (CAER) within the Department of Economics in the Faculty of Commerce was initially supported at the 31 March 1976 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The Centre was formally approved by the vice-chancellor on 7 June 1976. The first director of the Centre was Professor John Nevile. The main aim of the Centre was to encourage applied economics research in the university and to sponsor specific applied economic research projects (file 030903). As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time the Centre appears to have become a part of the larger School of Economics rather than the department (1989 Calendar, file 030903). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The Centre, along with the School of Economics, thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33).     The Department of Economic Statistics appears to have been formed within the School of Economics in the Faculty of Commerce sometime during 1961, presumably as a result of a re-organisation that took place following Professor M. C. Kemp's appointment as Head of School. (UNSW Calendar 1962: 65) On 12 July 1967 the Vice-Chancellor's Committee changed the name of the department to the Department of Econometrics. As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 November 1997 the dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics approved a proposal for all departments in the School of Economics to be disestablished effective from 31 December 1997 (file 972583).     The Japanese Economic and Management Studies Centre was initially discussed under the name of the Research Unit for Japanese Economic Studies at the 2 May 1979 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Committee, where it was named as one of the UNSW projects to be selected to be proposed for funding from the Universities Council's General Development Grant. This funding was formally approved by the Universities Council during August 1979 and in the same month Dr J. T. Yamaguchi was appointed as Interim Director of the Centre. On 8 October 1979, however, Dr Yamaguchi was named as the permanent Director of the Centre, taking up duty on 15 October 1979, and thus the Centre came into being within the Faculty of Commerce (file 033537). As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution CL88/90).     This series consists of agendas, papers and minutes of the Faculty of Commerce / Commerce & Economics, as well as the Faculty's Executive Committee and Higher Degree Committee, which were created as part of the revision to Chapter IV of the University's By-Laws under Council resolution 64/3 on 9th March, 1964. The series reflects the Faculty's change of name from the Faculty of Commerce to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics on 11th July, 1988 (Council resolution 88/90). The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders. Documents are generally arranged in chronological order, but occasionally minutes and papers from a later meeting date have been placed prior to items from an earlier meeting. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Faculty. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Faculty. A large proportion of minutes have been signed as approved by the Chairman at a subsequent Faculty meeting. For some meetings, however, particularly in the first fifteen years of the Faculty, the Archives only holds copies of the minutes - not the official signed versions. Major gaps also exist in the University Archives' holdings of the agendas and papers for the Faculty's Executive Committee and Higher Degree Committee. At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee (and optionally a Higher Degree Committee) and a Faculty Education Committee (or optionally an Undergraduate Education Committee & Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution CL99/81). Consequently this series ceased to be created at the end of 1999.

    The Faculty of Business was established by Council on 3 July 2006 (resolution CL06/68), as a result of the proposed disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management. The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, with Professor Alec Cameron as Dean. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). In 2007 the faculty was comprised of the Australian Graduate School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Banking & Finance, School of Business Law & Taxation, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, Technology & Management, School of Marketing, School of Organisation & Management, School of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, the Industrial Relations Research Centre and the Korea-Australasia Research Centre. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.
