    Description
    On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) - with microbiology becoming one of the first six schools within the faculty. At the 9 March 1987 meeting of Council the faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). On 5 November 1990 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Microbiology & Immunology (resolution CL90/95). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Microbiology & Immunology was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Microbiology & Immunology (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Microbiology & Immunology in order to form a School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences became the School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments, including the Department of Microbiology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). The first chair in microbiology was filled at the 8 May 1961 meeting of Council (resolution 61/59) with Professor M. R. J. Salton appointed to the position. On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) - with microbiology becoming one of the first six schools within the faculty.     The Faculty of Biological Sciences was created in principle by Council on 22nd January, 1968 (resolution 68/19i). At its 8th July, 1968 meeting, Council then approved the formal operation of the Faculty from 1st July, 1968 (resolution 68/108). Initially administered by Dean Professor B. J. Ralph, the Faculty commenced life with six Schools - Applied Psychology, Biochemistry, Biological Technology, Botany, Microbiology and Zoology. The Faculty met for the first time on 29th July, 1968. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). Finally, on 2nd December, 1996, Council disestablished the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     Dr Bernhard J. Ralph took up duties on 3 January 1950 as a Lecturer in Biochemistry within the Department of Applied Chemistry. In September 1950 Dr Ralph was promoted to senior lecturer. At the same time a small Department of Biological Sciences was created with Dr Ralph at its head within the larger Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Science (BRF - B. J. Ralph, Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel 22 July 1952 papers - file 00046006). On 10 September 1951 the Department of Applied Chemistry was re-designated as the School of Applied Chemistry, with the Department of Biological Sciences remaining a part of the new school (Council resolution 153). On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences was changed into a School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science with Dr Ralph becoming an associate professor and head of school (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments - biochemistry, botany, microbiology and zoology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). Consequently the School of Biological Sciences essentially ceased to exist from this date.     The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.     On 9 September 1985 the School of Biotechnology was redesignated the Department of Biotechnology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96). On 11 July 1988 the School of Biological Technologies was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Biotechnology, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences.     This series contains the booklet / leaflet collection of the Biotechnology and Biopressing Engineering Student Society (BABESOC) / Student Society for Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABSOC). The material consists of printed documents outlining the activities of the Society. "The Biotechnology and Bioprocessing Engineering student society (BABESOC) was originally founded in 1996 in the then Department of Biotechnology within the Faculty of Life Sciences. In 2001, there was a major restructure where Life Sciences was merged with the Faculty of Applied Science to form the Faculty of Science. Following this merger, a new School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Sciences (BABS) was established from the previous Department of Biotechnology School of Biochemistry, and School of Microbiology and Immunology. To cater for the larger student cohorts, the society was rebadged as BABSOC to include all undergraduate and postgraduate students currently studying a BABS taught course." (http://babsoc.com/about/)
