    Description
    On 14 July 1952 Council appointed Dr F. H. Reuter to the position of Associate Professor in Food Technology (resolution 234). When he commenced in this post on 16 July 1952, the Department of Food Technology also came into being within the School of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Science (SRF - Food Technology, file 00048296 CN980/102). On 8 November 1954 Council approved the introduction of a full-time degree course in food technology (resolution 518). On 14 May 1956 Council created the Faculty of Technology (resolution 761i) and the School of Chemical Engineering, including the Department of Food Technology, was moved into this faculty. On 9 May 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 19 January 1976 Council made the department into a separate School of Food Technology within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 76/10).     The Faculty of Arts was created at the 9th November, 1959 meeting of Council, to be effective from 1st January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii). The initial meeting of the Faculty occurred on 24th February 1960, with Professor Morven Brown as Dean. In the beginning, the Faculty had five schools - English, History, Philosophy, Sociology and Librarianship. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). In 2013 the Faculty, under Dean Professor James Donald, consisted of five schools and seven Centres.     The Faculty of Engineering was established on 8th May, 1950 under Council resolution 54. Through a ruling by the Developmental Council engineering courses had already been in operation at Sydney Technical College from 1st March, 1948, but this resolution officially created the Faculty. Initially the Faculty contained four departments - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering - and was administered by Dean H. J. Brown. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty took place on 7th June, 1950. In 2013, the Faculty, under Dean Professor Graham Davies, included nine schools and nineteen Centres.     On 19 January 1976 Council made the Department of Food Technology into a separate School of Food Technology within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 76/10). On 13 May 1985 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Food Science & Technology (resolution 85/54). On 9 September 1985 the school was redesignated the Department of Food Science & Technology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96).     This series contains the agendas, papers and minutes of the Faculty of Technology / Faculty of Applied Science, as well as the Faculty's Executive Committee and Higher Degree Committee, which were created as part of the revision to Chapter IV of the University's By-Laws under Council resolution 64/3 on 9th March, 1964. The series reflects the Faculty's change of name from the Faculty of Technology to the Faculty of Applied Science on 9th May, 1960 (Council resolution 60/55). The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders. Documents are generally arranged in chronological order, but occasionally minutes and papers from a later meeting date have been placed prior to items from an earlier meeting. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Faculty. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Faculty. A large proportion of minutes have been signed as approved by the Chairman at a subsequent Faculty meeting. For some meetings, however, particularly in the first fifteen years of the Faculty, the University Archives only holds copies of the minutes - not the official signed versions. Major gaps also exist in the Archives' holdings of the agendas and papers for the Faculty's Executive Committee and Higher Degree Committee.

    This series contains the handbooks of the Faculty of Science / Faculties of Biological Science and Science / Sciences / Science. Unlike all other faculty handbooks, this series contains a combination of faculty / board courses - at various times including the courses of the Faculty of Science, Faculty of Biological Science, Board of Studies in Science / Science & Mathematics, Faculty of Life Sciences and the Faculty of Science & Technology. Each item is a typed, paper-bound volume, which were released on a yearly basis and contains information about the courses available in the faculty, including subject descriptions. Prior to 1960, some of this information had been contained in the university calendar. From 1976 copies of the handbook are also included in the bound versions of the university calendar. From 2002 this series of faculty handbooks were replaced by a new series of Undergraduate and Postgraduate handbooks.

    On 9 September 1985 the School of Biotechnology was redesignated the Department of Biotechnology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96). On 11 July 1988 the School of Biological Technologies was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Biotechnology, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the Department of Biotechnology within the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Biotechnology, in order to form a School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     The Faculty of Science was established as one of the first three faculties of the University at the Council meeting on 8th May, 1950 (resolution 54).     This series consists of the subject files of the Dean of the Faculty of Science. The material is mainly typed and contained in manilla folders in alphabetical order. Although the items predominately relate to numerous issues affecting the Faculty of Science, it also includes some files from Deans from previous science faculties - including the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences, Faculty of Life Sciences and Faculty of Science & Technology. These files were presumably passed on to the Dean of Science when the two latter faculties were merged to form a single Faculty of Science (2) on 1 July 2001. Currently the Archives holds items from this series for periods covering deans William O'Sullivan, Merilyn Sleigh, Colin Sutherland, Dennis Lincoln, Aldo Bagnara and Mike Archer.     The Faculty of Business was established by Council on 3 July 2006 (resolution CL06/68), as a result of the proposed disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management. The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, with Professor Alec Cameron as Dean. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). In 2007 the faculty was comprised of the Australian Graduate School of Management, School of Accounting, School of Banking & Finance, School of Business Law & Taxation, School of Economics, School of Information Systems, Technology & Management, School of Marketing, School of Organisation & Management, School of Strategy & Entrepreneurship, the Industrial Relations Research Centre and the Korea-Australasia Research Centre. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.
