    Description
    On 10 July 1996 a Memorandum of Understanding agreement was signed that enabled the creation of the Centre for Sensory Research. The main aim of the Centre was to concentrate multi-disciplinary skills upon the scientific study of the chemical senses of humans and animals and apply this knowledge to solve technical, economic and social problems. Shortly afterwards the Centre appears to have become known as the Centre for Chemosensory Research (CCR). The Centre was attached equally to the faculties of Science, Biological & Behavioural Sciences and Medicine and commenced operations on 1 February 1997 with Associate Professor Graham Bell as the first director (file 961285). The Centre's facilities at Australian Technology Park opened in April 1997 (file 972357). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the faculties of Science and Biological & Behavioural Sciences were disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre was transferred jointly to the faculties of Life Sciences, Medicine and Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the faculties of Life Sciences and Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date the Centre was academically administered by the faculties of Science and Medicine. On 13 January 2003 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of the Centre for Chemosensory Research forthwith. This was finalised effective from 1 February 2003 (file 2004/1514).     This series consists of the minutes & Papers of the Research Committee of the Faculty of Science & Technology. The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders. Documents are generally arranged in chronological order. They include the notice of meeting, action points and other papers relating to the meetings. The Committee appears to have taken over the functions of the former faculty Higher Degree Committee. The Archives' holdings of this series are incomplete.     This series consists of the minutes and agendas of the meetings of the Heads of Units in the Faculty of Science and Technology. The material is typed and contained in a folder. The material is arranged chronologically, with the minutes placed before the agenda. The meetings were established to allow Heads of Units within the Faculty to discuss issues that affect themselves and the Faculty in general. The Archives' holdings for this series are incomplete.

    On 10 May 1976 Council approved the dissolution of the School of Applied Physics & Optometry effective from 1 January 1977 and the establishment of a School of Optometry from the same date (resolution 76/67). Thus, while the department of Applied Physics was returned to the School of Physics, the department of Optometry became its own school within the Faculty of Science. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Optometry was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). At the same meeting, the name of the school was changed to become the School of Optometry & Vision Science within the new faculty with effect from the same date (resolution CL001/50b). In 2008 the head of the School of Optometry & Vision Science was Associate Professor Fiona Stapleton.     Description
    The Universities' Surface Analysis Facility was established in 1989 within the Faculty of Applied Science. The surface analysis facility was purchased to be located at the University of New South Wales, with access to all the researchers in the Sydney region from all the Sydney universities. The facility was controlled by a management committee with members drawn from all the participating institutions and at UNSW was administratively controlled by the Faculty of Applied Science (file 892594). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility (resolution CL001/49). On 1 January 2007 the new University of New South Wales Analytical Centre was officially opened.     Description
    The School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics and Microbiology & Immunology, as well as the Department of Biotechnology (resolution CL001/84). The first head of school was Professor Peter Little. In 2007 the Head of School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences was Professor Pauline Doran.     The Department of Mathematics existed from the very beginning of the university - 1 July 1949. Initially, however, it was only a servicing department that still had most of its roots in the Sydney Technical College. It was only when Geoffrey Bosson - previously the lecturer in charge of the department - was made an Associate Professor on 1 January, 1951 that mathematics began to move away from its Sydney Technical College foundations and became a member of the Faculty of Science (Technology, Vol. 10, No. 1). On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Mathematics came into existence (resolution 153). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Mathematics was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Mathematics (resolution CL001/49). On 15 May 2006 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Mathematics & Statistics (resolution CL06/36). In August 2006 the head of the School of Mathematics & Statistics was Professor Michael Cowling. The school had three departments - Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics & Statistics.     The establishment of the Centre for Remote Sensing was endorsed at the 12 August 1981 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The main aim of the Centre was to co-ordinate and develop the teaching and research in the multi-disciplinary area of remote sensing. The Centre was jointly administered by the faculties of Applied Science and Engineering and Dr J. A. Richards was appointed as the Centre's first Director. On 5 May 1992 the Academic Board endorsed the renaming of the Centre as the Centre for Remote Sensing and Geographic Information Systems. This was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 22 June 1992 (file 930751-01). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre became a joint centre of the faculties of Engineering and Science and Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date the Centre became a joint centre of the faculties of Engineering and Science. On 21 April 2004 the Pro-Vice-Chancellor wrote to the director of the Centre indicating that the Centre would be disestablished as a UNSW Research Centre, but that the Centre [would] remain listed as a Centre under the 'Other Centres' category for a period of 12 months. Although there were plans for the Centre to become a teaching program centre in association with the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, this does not seem to have eventuated and the Centre appears to have ceased operations by the end of the 12 month period (file 930751-02, http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.bees.unsw.edu.au/crsgis/crsgis.html).     On 2 June 1992 the Academic Board approved the creation of a Centre for Numerical Computation in Engineering & Science (resolution 92/27i). On the next meeting of the Board on 7 July, however, the Centre's name was changed to the Centre for Advance Numerical Computation in Engineering & Science (CANCES) (resolution 92/40ii). On 8 August 1992 the Vice-Chancellor gave his approval to the creation of the Centre (file 920875). The Centre began its life under Acting Director Professor Graham de Vahl Davis, but by February 1993 full-time Director Professor Clive Fletcher had been appointed. The Centre was jointly administered by the faculties of Engineering and Science. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre for Advanced Numerical Computation in Engineering & Science was jointly administered by the faculties of Engineering and Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the Centre for Advanced Numerical Computation in Engineering & Science (resolution CL001/49). From this date the Centre was thus jointly administered by the faculties of Engineering and Science. The Centre was closed on 30 June 2002, as it was found that there was reduced value in providing ongoing 'computational' resources from a general-purpose centre like CANCES (file 001272).
