    Description
    The Cornea & Contact Lens Research Unit began work as a unit within the School of Optometry in the Faculty of Science in 1976 and was formally established the following year. Its inaugural Director was Associate Professor B. Holden. The Unit carried out research projects with staff and students, employed research assistants from the School of Optometry from 1979, and provided programs in continuing and clinical education. On 8 August 1984 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee formally established the unit as a research centre within the university. The aim of the unit was to coordinate and develop postgraduate teaching and research projects in the area of the cornea and the role and effects of extraocular devices on the anterior eye (file 840739). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Cornea & Contact Lens Research Unit was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the Cornea & Contact Lens Research Unit. At the same meeting, the name of the school was changed to become the School of Optometry & Vision Science within the new faculty with effect from the same date (resolutions CL001/49 & CL001/50b). On 9 December 2003 the Cornea & Contact Lens Unit was disestablished by the Head of the School of Optometry & Vision Science (file 2004/0280-01).     This series consists of minutes, agendas and papers of staff meetings of the Department / School of History and Philosophy of Science / School of Science and Technology Studies / School of History and Philosophy of Science. The meetings are a vehicle for discussions and decisions on issues such as funding and staffing allocations, teaching methods, subjects of programs and course structure, performance of students and marking and assessment. The head of school also uses the meetings to report back on university and faculty business and developments. The Archives currently (2010) only holds items from this series for the period 1994 - 1998. Copies of minutes accompanied by correspondence and papers for individual meetings have been donated by Professor David Miller (accession 14/455). This run, while not complete and only roughly in chronological order, covers the period from 1987 to March 2000.

    On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering together to form the new School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective 1 January 1980 within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 79/157). The first Head of School was Professor David Trimm. On 2 December 1996 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Applied Science - effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). Consequently, from this date the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry was moved to the Faculty of Engineering. At the 10 April 2006 meeting of Council the school's name was changed to the School of Chemical Sciences & Engineering (resolution CL06/18). On 29 January 2010 the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approved the change in name of the school to the School of Chemical Engineering (file 2002/2060).     The Department of Applied Physics dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. On 26 January, 1950 Professor N. F. Astbury arrived as the initial head of department. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Applied Physics became one of the first three departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Applied Physics came into existence (resolution 153). On 12 September, 1960 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Physics (resolution 60/139). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Physics was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Physics (resolution CL001/49). In 2006, the Head of the School of Physics was Professor Warrick Couch. The school contained five departments and two centres.     Description
    The Centre for Groundwater Management and Hydrogeology was created within the faculties of Applied Science and Engineering at the 4 March 1987 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The Centre was officially launched on 29 June 1987. The main aims of the Centre were to research groundwater problems of strategic national importance; co-ordinate and develop post-graduate courses and continuing education programs; and liaise with industry. The first director of the Centre was Dr M. J. Knight (file 831032). On 9 June 1993 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved that the Centre's name be changed to the UNSW Groundwater Centre effective from 1 June 1993 (file 930772). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre became a joint centre of the faculties of Engineering and Science and Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date the Centre became a joint centre of the faculties of Engineering and Science.     On 9 March 1959 Council approved the establishment of a chair in chemical technology (resolution 59/3). On 14 September 1959 (resolution 59/147) Council approved the appointment of Professor F. W. Ayscough to this chair. Thus the School of Chemical Technology was created within the Faculty of Technology - with other staff members moving to the school from the School of Chemical Engineering in March 1960 (file 00077528, CN980, Box 42). On 9 May 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering to form the new School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry (resolution 79/157). As a result, the school ceased to exist effective from 1 January 1980.     The Department of Mathematics existed from the very beginning of the university - 1 July 1949. Initially, however, it was only a servicing department that still had most of its roots in the Sydney Technical College. It was only when Geoffrey Bosson - previously the lecturer in charge of the department - was made an Associate Professor on 1 January, 1951 that mathematics began to move away from its Sydney Technical College foundations and became a member of the Faculty of Science (Technology, Vol. 10, No. 1). On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Mathematics came into existence (resolution 153). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Mathematics was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology.     On 25 October 1999 the Commonwealth Government announced the approval of ARC Special Research Centre funding for the establishment of the Centre for Quantum Computer Technology to be headed by Professor Robert G. Clark. The funding was granted to the Centre from 1 January 2000. Although the primary node of the Centre was at UNSW, nodes were also located at the universities of Queensland and Melbourne. From 2003 other nodes of the Centre were established at the University of Sydney, Griffith University, Macquarie University and the Australian Defence Force Academy (file 992070). At UNSW the Centre was located in the School of Physics in the Faculty of Science & Technology. The initial aim of the Centre was to carry out a broad range of experimental and theoretical research programs that will lead to construction, at the atomic level, of a revolutionary prototype solid state quantum computer (file 992070). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date at UNSW the School of Physics, including the Centre, was academically administered by the Faculty of Science.
