    Description
    The Bachelor of Social Work degree course was approved by Council on 14 September 1964 to begin operations in 1965 (resolution 64/170). At the 8 October 1963 meeting of the Professorial Board it had already been deemed that the School of Sociology be academically responsible for the proposed degree course in Social Work under the administration of the Board of Vocational Studies (resolution 63/365). It was not, however, until 13 September 1965 that a position of Associate Professor of Social Work within the School of Sociology was created by Council (resolution 65/104). On 8 November 1965 Norma Parker was appointed to this position (resolution 65/164) - taking up duty on 1 February 1966. On 11 September 1967 the Department of Social Work was officially created within the Board of Vocational Studies with all staff directly involved in the degree of Bachelor of Social Work to be separated from the School of Sociology (resolution 67/160). Associate Professor Parker was named as the first head of department. On 13 November 1967 Council established the first chair of social work and noted that when the chair of Social Work is established and filled, the Department of Social Work shall become the School of Social Work. Professor R. J. Lawrence was appointed to this position on 8 July 1968 (resolution 68/109) and when he took up duty on 28 November 1968 the School of Social Work came into being. On 12 November, 1973 Council changed the name of the Board of Vocational Studies to the Board of Professional Studies (resolution 73/231). A year later, on 11 November 1974, Council approved the reconstitution of the Board into the Faculty of Professional Studies from 20 January 1975 (resolution 74/227). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Professional Studies was disestablished effective 1 January 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Social Work was transferred to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Social Work was disestablished effective 31 January 2007. It was amalgamated with the schools of Politics & International Relations, Sociology & Anthropology and Social Science & Policy to form the new School of Social Sciences & International Studies (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers).     On 11 May 1970 Council reformed the Department of Surveying into an independent School of Surveying within the Faculty of Engineering (resolution 70/73). On 27 June 1994 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Geomatic Engineering effective from 1995 (resolution CL94/52d). On 18 June 2001 the school's name was changed again to the School of Surveying & Spatial Information Systems effective from 1 July 2001 (Council resolution CL001/50c). At its meeting on 26 June 2012, the Academic Board resolved (resolution AB12/25) that it be recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approve the proposal to change the name of the school to the School of Surveying & Geospatial Engineering. This was approved effective 1 July 2012. At the 7 May 2013 Academic Board meeting it was recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approve the integration of the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering and the School of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, and, as a concomitant action, the disestablishment of the School of Surveying and Geospatial Engineering, the ongoing School to continue to be named the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, effective 2 July 2013 (resolution AB13/17).     This series consists of the minutes, agendas and papers of the Policy Advisory Committee of the Academic Board. The material is typed and arranged in manilla folders in chronological order. For each meeting, the minutes for that meeting normally appear first, followed by the agenda and any attached papers that were circulated to members along with the agenda prior to the meeting. The minutes for each meeting have also been signed as approved by the Chair of the Committee at a subsequent Committee meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Committee. The agendas show the issues that were to be addressed, while the papers consist of reports or other submissions that were to be discussed by the Committee.

    On 6 March 2007 the Academic Board recommended the creation of the School of Art History and Art Education within the College of Fine Arts effective from 31 March 2007, as a result of the disestablishment of the schools of Art Education and Art History and Theory (resolution AB07/06). In accordance with clause 7.3.1 of the UNSW Register of Delegations, the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approved this decision on 20 March 2007 (file 2002/2060). Ms Kim Snepvangers was initially the acting head of school - and shortly afterwards was appointed to this position permanently. On 3 December 2013 the Academic Board recommended the establishment of the School of the College of Fine Arts in the College of Fine Arts and the consequent disestablishment of the schools of Art, Art History and Art Education, Design Studies and Media Arts with effect from 1 January 2014 (resolution AB13/84).     The Wollongong University College Development Committee was established by the Professorial Board on 11th May, 1965 (resolution 65/132). The Committee's duties were to: 1.Consider and report to the Professorial Board and the Vice-Chancellor on all recommendations from the Wollongong Advisory Committee, the Wollongong Academic Advisory Committee and on other proposals relating to the development of Wollongong University College; and 2.Prepare an overall plan for the development of Wollongong University College. The first meeting of the Committee was on 9th June, 1965 with Professor J. F. Clark as Chairman. The Committee was disbanded by the Professorial Board on 9th July, 1968 (resolution 68/189). A Wollongong College Board of Studies was formed, which had the status of a Faculty and therefore the requirement to report directly to the Professorial Board.     At the 23 October 2000 meeting of the AGSM Academic Board, changes to AGSM's committees were approved. The AGSM committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Standing Committee, a Research Committee and a Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution ACB00/01). The new Committee structure was implemeted from May 2001, with the first meeting of the Faculty Board taking place on 9 May 2001. At this time, there was also a division of duties between the Secretariat and the Faculty, whereby the Secretariat was only responsible for the Board & Standing Committees - the rest of the Committees were left up to the Faculty. Consequently this series only generally holds items from the Board & Standing Committee. The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders with documents generally arranged in chronological order. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Faculty. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Faculty.

    The Board of Studies for the Australian Graduate School of Management was approved by Council at its 8th September, 1975 meeting (resolution 75/144). Its purpose was to supervise teaching, organise student assessment and admissions, encourage scholarship and research, prescribe texts and determine the duration of courses within the School. The inaugural meeting of the Board took place on 2nd April, 1976, with Professor P. Brown as Chairman. At the 23 October 2000 meeting of the AGSM Academic Board, changes to AGSM's committees were approved. The AGSM committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Standing Committee, a Research Committee and a Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution ACB00/01). (Act No. 11, 1949) John C Webb, head of Mining Engineering in the Department of Technical Education, was appointed as the first registrar of the university although in a part-time capacity. Under the Act he was responsible for the administrative of the academic aspects of the university and to ensure that all elections associated with the University were conducted according to the by-laws. Mr Webb resigned on 3 Nov 1950 to return to England (BRF - Webb, J C) and was succeeded as part-time registrar by Godfrey Macauley who was an assistant director of Technical Education in the Department of Education. On 1 Nov 1952 Mr Macauley was appointed as the first full-time registrar of the university. (Uniken 15 April 1994: 11) The Division of the Registrar was established through Resolution 427 (Council Meeting, 10 May 1954) under Section 27 of the Technical Education and New South Wales University of Technology Act, 1949. The proclamation of the 'Appointed Day' on 1 July 1954, when full control of the university was invested in Council, saw the division assume greater administrative powers. The work of the division was originally undertaken by Mr Macauley, five clerical officers and three office assistants. In 1961 the official university publication entitled The University of New South Wales defined the work of the division. 'The Registrar, assisted by two Deputy Registrars, is responsible for providing the administrative arrangements relating to the secretarial work of the Council, Professorial Board and Faculties, and the standing committees of these bodies; the admission and enrolment of students; examinations and maintenance of student records; the award of scholarships and admission to degrees; public relations and University publications; and student services generally.' (The University of New South Wales:11) On 13 July 1970 through Council Resolution 70/94 (Council Meeting, 13 July 1970) Mr Macauley's appointment was changed to Assistant Principal and Registrar and the division became known as the Division of the Assistant Principal and Registrar although its functions remained the same. In 1984 the central administration of the university was reorganised into two divisions: Administration and Planning and Information. This necessitated a reorganisation of functions that had once been undertaken by the divisions of the registrar and the bursar. The Deputy Principal (Administration) headed a division which contained the Department of the Registrar, which was responsible for student administration, student services and administrative services, as well as the Property Department and the Personnel Department. (UNSW Annual Report 1985: 9, 66-67) On 17 September 1990 the central administration of the university was reorganised once again. The division was named the Division of the Registrar and Deputy Principal. (resolution 90/84) The reorganisation was undertaken to meet the needs of a major capital works program and new initiatives in the property function as well as changes resulting from the appointment of a second pro-vice-chancellor (UNSW Annual Report 1990: 179-180) The four departments comprising the division were the Student Administration Department; the Administrative Services Department; the Student Services Department; and the Property and Works Department. (04/17/2 Administration Manual - Amendment: Issued 11/90) A report by the NSW state government's Office of Public Management commissioned by the vice-chancellor in mid 1991 saw the Division of the Registrar and Deputy Principal assume additional responsibility for the Legal Office, Staff Office and Senior Appointments Unit. (UNSW Annual Report 1991: 26) However in 1992 the Staff Office and Senior Appointments Unit as well as the capital works function of the Property and Works Department were transferred to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs). (UNSW Annual Report 1992: 171) Professor Niland's appointment as vice-chancellor saw the Ethics Secretariat and the University Press come under the responsibility of the division. (Focus 8 May 1992: 11) In February 2004 the Division was renamed Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and on 1 March 2004 Professor Robert King took up his duties as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) and Registrar. The division brought together corporate services including UNSW Student Services, Human Resources, Legal Office, Policy Management Unit, Equity and Diversity Unit, Institutional Analysis and Reporting, and Secretariat Services.
