    Description
    The Finance Committee was created by the New South Wales Institute of Technology Developmental Council on 27th August, 1947. Its membership comprised W. Parry-Okeden (Convenor), J. Glasheen, J. N. Kirby and P. D. Riddell. The Committee's duties were: 1. Capital funds for buildings and equipment 2. Annual financial provision 3. Students' fees. 4. Contributions from industry 5. Scholarships, prizes etc. 6. Financial Administration 7. Financial programme for the immediate future. The only meeting of the Committee took place on 25th September, 1947, where it was agreed that little progress could be made by this committee until the form which the Institute was to take had been established by the other committees.

    Description
    The Administration Committee was formed at the 27th August, 1947 meeting of the New South Wales Institute of Technology Developmental Council. The initial membership of the Committee was composed of W. C. Wurth, H. J. Conde, A. Denning, R. C. Harrison, Professor Le Fevre, F. M. Mathews, P. D. Riddell and R. J. Webster. The responsibilities of the Committee were: 1. Title of Institute and its functions relative to universities and technical colleges. 2. Form of control - corporate body, royal charter, constitution. 3. Titles and duties of administration officers and bodies, academic staff, groups and departments. 4. Programme for the immediate future. 5. Consideration of the legal aspects and legal status of diplomas and degrees, and matters incidental thereto. 6. Legislation required immediately. 7. Further legislation required in the future. The first meeting of the Committee took place on 3rd September, 1947. Five meetings were held in all, with the final meeting taking place on 3rd August, 1948.

    The Public Relations Committee was established by the New South Wales Institute of Technology Developmental Council on 27th August, 1947. Initial members consisted of H. J. Conde (Convenor), R. C. Harrison, W. G. Kett and F. Wilson. The Committee's duties were 1. Publicity among students and the public on progress of the Institute, and the facilities it offers. 2. Consideration of recommendations made by various institutions and public bodies and reference of these to the appropriate committees. 3. Preparation of a handbook to cover the immediate activities of the Institute. 4. Planning what future requirements should be met by the Institute. Only two meetings of the Committee occurred - the first on 1st October, 1947 and the second on 10th March, 1948. At the 10th March meeting it was determined that publicity should be restricted for the present until the Act of Parliament had been passed. The Committee would therefore concern itself only with the draft bulletin for the immediate future.

    Description
    Files consisting of correspondence, draft correspondence, procedures, arrangements, invitations, acceptances and rejections to university functions and functions arranged on behalf of Mr Denning, Director of Technical Education and NSWUT. Papers have been kept loose in manila folders. Unfortunately the files are not complete. The records were kept by Mr Fraser, Assistant Registrar and Secretary to Council,, in conducting university business and leading up to the university's 10th anniversary Mr Fraser used the papers to assist him in writing the university's first historical account.     The University Union was established by Council on 9 March 1959 (resolution 59/57). At the time it was outlined that a Union be created of which all students shall be compulsory members, and for which a fee shall be collection and in which any member of the University's full-time staff may be a member, this Union to be governed by a Board, and that the Vice-Chancellor be asked to consult with the various sections of the University who have interests in this matter and to submit in due course to the University Council, for its approval, a charter and constitution for such a Union. In July 1960 the first Warden of the Union, Mr Tay Cunningham was appointed, and on 11 July 1960 Council approved the formation of a Developmental Committee to carry on the development of the union pending the setting up of a Board of Management of the Union not later than the end of the first term of the 1961 academic year. 19 meetings of the Union Developmental Committee were held with Professor E. B. Smyth as Chairman and at the final meeting on 23 June 1961, the names of members elected and appointed to the Board of Management were announced. (University Union Annual Report 1961). The first meeting of the Board of Management occurred on 5 July 1961 with Professor E. B. Smyth as Union President. Shortly afterwards, on 27 July 1961, the Union building (later known as the Roundhouse) was officially opened, although it had been used for official functions at least since 19 April 1961 (Origins Uniken Feature, 10 September 1982). From its 3 October 1990 meeting, the Board became known as the Board of Directors. At the 30 November 2005 meeting of the Board it was decided to use that the Union would use the trading name Source commencing from session 1, 2006. It was noted at this meeting, however, that the name of its legal identity was still the University of New South Wales Union. Following the introduction of Voluntary Student Unionism (VSU) by the Commonwealth Government from 1 July 2006, the University Union merged with the Student Guild and COFA Students' Association to form the Arc from the beginning of 2007, as approved by Council at its 6 November 2006 meeting (resolution CL06/87). 2006 was thus the final year of operations for the Union, but its final Annual General Meeting occurred on 30 May 2007 to pass the final set of financial accounts (news@unsw 17 May 2007).     The Faculty of Engineering was established on 8th May, 1950 under Council resolution 54. Through a ruling by the Developmental Council engineering courses had already been in operation at Sydney Technical College from 1st March, 1948, but this resolution officially created the Faculty. Initially the Faculty contained four departments - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering - and was administered by Dean H. J. Brown. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty took place on 7th June, 1950. In 2013, the Faculty, under Dean Professor Graham Davies, included nine schools and nineteen Centres.     This series contains papers from Mr Denning's office which were held by Mr Fraser. Denning was Director of Technical Education and first Director of the New South Wales University of Technology. Fraser was Secretary to the Developmental Council and Council and the Director of the University. The papers are not complete an have only survived in bits and pieces. They were used by Fraser in writing the first historical account of the University. Within this series the file containing Professorial Board papers duplicates papers from S41, it has been kept as the papers have been annotated by Denning. Folder number 2 contains part of a letter with no date, entitled 'Work of Interest to the Commonwealth Government', outlining the services of the university to government. Copies of two letters of correspondence originating from Wallace Wurth are also included in this series; one of these letters is dated 12 July 1950 addressed to the Minister for Supply and Development and outlines facilities available for Indian and eastern students at the University of Technology at that time. Also included are some printed matters like the Trade Union Directory 1951 and information on timetables and the 1952 fees.

    Copies of correspondence to and from Heffron, draft speeches, and material relating to legislation concerning the University. Fraser acted as Secretary to Heffron prior to being Secretary to the Developmental Council and then Council of the university. The papers relate to Fraser's day to day business activities in his position as Secretary.

    This series consist of yearly reports written by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor John Niland. The reports were based on his mid-year reports to Council in which he reported on the main developmental activisites and initiatives with which the Chancellery Divisions were involved in the July to June period. The 'Review' was a means to communicate with members of the University community to enable the community to readily gain an overview of the work from the centre in servicing the further development of the university's research and teaching activities. Satff members were invited to make comments or raise questions relevant to matters raised in the 'Review'.

    Description
    The establishment of the New South Wales Institute of Technology Joint Committee on Higher Education was first recommended at the 22nd January, 1948 meeting of the Developmental Council. It was then resolved that the Minister be asked to consider the advisability of setting up a joint Committee consisting of representatives of the University of Sydney, the Institute of Technology and Technical Education, to investigate present requirements for admission to the three tertiary educational institutions and to submit proposals for the co-ordination of such requirements. The Committee was subsequently set up with Dr R. W. Harman as Chairman. The initial meeting took place on 29th April, 1948 and the last meeting on 7th June, 1948.
