    As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time all departments within the School of Accountancy were made either schools in their own right or independent departments. This included the Department of Finance, which became the School of Banking and Finance. On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.

    On 4 March 1998 the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics gave its approval for the introduction of a disciplinary stream in Actuarial Studies within the School of Economics (resolution CEE98/30) and so the Actuarial Studies Unit effectively came into being from this date. In January 1998 Professor Michael Sherris had been initially appointed a Visiting Professor with the faculty to develop the academic programs in the actuarial studies area (file 931102 19 June letter from Professor Roger Layton to Vice-Chancellor Professor John Niland), but soon afterwards he was appointed as a permanent chair and head of the Unit. At some time during 2002 the Actuarial Studies Unit appears to have moved from the School of Economics to the School of Accounting (2002 and 2003 Calendars). On 3 July 2006 Council proposed the amalgamation of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management into the newly formed Faculty of Business and consequently Actuarial Studies became part of this faculty, seemingly as an independent unit (resolution CL06/68). The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, but by 18 June 2007 the name of the faculty was changed to the Australian School of Business at UNSW (Council resolution CL07/33). At the 2 August 2011 Academic Board meeting it was recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approve the establishment of the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies (replacing the Actuarial Studies Unit) in the Australian School of Business, effective 1 January 2012 (resolution AB11/46).     Description
    Minutes, agendas and papers of meetings of the Heads of Schools and Departments/ Heads of Schools Committee of the Faculty of Arts/ Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. The University Archives' holdings of this series derives from two sources and consist of copies of the minutes, agendas and papers from the School of History and the office of Sub-Dean of the Faculty of Arts starting from 1984. At the meetings the dean reports to the heads on university policy and administration and on academic issues discussed at the Vice Chancellor's Advisory Committee (VCAC). Matters raised are those of accommodation, use of faculty facilities, equipment, accounts, enrolments, and procedures for course approval, recruitment and selection procedures for staff, et al. Also discussed are matters like special grant applications and collaboration in teaching between different schools. Other records realting to heads of school meetings held by the Archives date from early 1963 to 1974 and consist of circulars to heads of schools of the faculty, papers relating to meetings as well as handwritten notes of meetings kept by the head of the school of French.

    In March 1973 the Department of Legal Studies and Taxation was established within the School of Accountancy in the Faculty of Commerce, as a result of the school's decision to create a four department structure (file 950718, V480). The first head of department was Dr A. W. Lacey. As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988. At the same time the department was separated from the School of Accountancy and became an independent unit within the faculty (resolution CL88/90). On 5 June 1995 Council approved a change in name and status for the department and thus the School of Business Law and Taxation replaced the department from this date (resolution CL95/40).     On 9 May 1966 Council approved the establishment of a Chair of Finance (resolution 66/84). A fundraising committee for the Chair, made up of prominent businessmen, had been set up on 19 August 1965 and this was the primary instigation for the Chair's formal approval (file 00019921, CN1160/289). At Council's 13 November 1967 meeting, Dr R. C. Olsson was appointed to this chair (resolution 67/199vii). He commenced duty on 1 May 1968 and so the Department of Finance as an independent department within the Faculty of Commerce came into being. At the 13 September 1971 meeting of Council the Department of Finance was moved to the School of Accountancy (resolution 71/126). As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time all departments within the School of Accountancy were made either schools in their own right or independent departments.     Description
    The creation of the Centre for Management Accounting Development within the School of Accounting was recommended at the 7 August 1990 meeting of the Academic Board (resolution 90/50). The Centre's main focus was to develop the quality of management accounting practice in Australia and thereby the productivity and competitiveness of Australian organisations. Professor Bill Birkett was appointed as the first director of the Centre. At the 6 November 1990 meeting of the Academic Board, however, a change in the name of the Centre to the Australian Centre for Management Accounting Development (ACMAD) was proposed. This was approved by the Acting Vice-Chancellor on 7 December 1990 (file 901689). On 8 April 2003 the then director of ACMAD, Associate Professor Michael Briers, wrote to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research), advising her that the centre had been disestablished effective from the end of 2002 (file 962169).
