    On 13 May 1968 Council approved the establishmenht of a new School of Applied Physics & Optometry within the Faculty of Science (resolution 68/72). As well as the Department of Optometry, the school also comprised the newly formed Department of Applied Physics. The aims of the department were: - to train applied physicists for professional work - to educate physicists to interest themselves in the application of their subject - to propagate a knowledge of current applications of physics among professional scientists and engineers The inaugural head of department was Professor C. J. Milner. (file 00023677). On 10 May 1976 Council approved the dissolution of the School of Applied Physics & Optometry effective from 1 January 1977 and the establishment of a School of Optometry from the same date (resolution 76/67). Consequently the Department of Applied Physics was moved to the School of Physics from this date. On 6 December 1994 the Academic Board recommended that the Vice-Chancellor approve the change in name of the department to the Department of Environmental & Applied Physics (resolution AB94/114). On 20 April 1995 the Vice-Chancellor approved this proposal (file 931110). In 2007 the Head of the Department of Environmental & Applied Physics was Dr Gail Box.     Description
    The Department of Applied Organic Chemistry appears to have been created as a result of changes in the Department of Organic Chemistry. With Professor S. Angyal being given the chair of organic chemistry on 14 March 1960 (Council resolution 60/2), Dr K. Cavill being promoted to an associate professor within the Department of Organic Chemistry from 1 July 1959 (Council resolution 59/58) and E. R. Cole being awarded his PhD on 4 May 1960, the time seems to have been right for the new Department of Applied Organic Chemistry to come into being within the School of Chemistry, with Dr E. R. Cole as the first head of department [Note: as no exact date for the establishment of the department could be located, this conclusion has been reached as the April 1959 report to the Chemistry Advisory Panel CN913 does not include this department in its list of departments, while it is named in a School of Chemistry brochure dated c. 1960, located in S351]. On 23 July 1980 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved the amalgamation of the department with the Department of Organic Chemistry, effective from 1 December 1980.     Description
    The Department of Applied Chemistry dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. On 10 November, 1949 Professor A. E. Alexander took up the position of the first head of department. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Applied Chemistry became one of the inaugural departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Applied Chemistry came into existence (resolution 153). The School of Applied Chemistry appears to have had its name changed to the School of Chemistry sometime in late 1957. Although the school had sometimes been referred to as the School of Chemistry before this date, on 11 November 1957 Council authorised a split of the Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel, with the new panels becoming the Chemistry Advisory Panel and the Chemical Engineering & Food Technology Advisory Panel (resolution 57/163a). This split seems to have coincided with the final definitive change to the school's name. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Chemistry was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Chemistry (resolution CL001/49). At its meeting on 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Chemistry. Together with the Department of Food Science & Technology, the school's staff were moved to the newly formed School of Chemical Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     The Department of Mining Engineering dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. The first head of department was Professor D. W. Phillips, who was appointed on 12 August 1949. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Mining Engineering became one of the initial four departments within the Faculty of Engineering. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Mining Engineering came into existence (resolution 153). In late 1951 the geology section was absorbed into the school and so it came to be known as the School of Mining Engineering & Applied Geology (Technology, Vol. 3, No. 1). On 14 May 1956 Council created the Faculty of Technology (resolution 761i) and the school was moved to this faculty. On 9 May 1960 Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 9 September 1963 Council reverted the name of the School of Mining Engineering & Applied Geology to the School of Mining Engineering, with the School of Applied Geology becoming its own independent school (resolution 63/183). On 9 September 1985 the School of Mining Engineering was altered by Council from a school to a department within the School of Mineral Resources effective 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).     Description
    Industrial and Labour Relations was first taught as a subject in 1955 as part of the industrial stream of the Bachelor of Applied Psychology. In June 1957 the Faculty of Commerce began teaching the Bachelor of Commerce degree and students could undertake Industrial and Labour Relations as an elective subject within the Economics major. In 1958 the Bachelor of Commerce (Applied Psychology) was introduced and in 1959 the Bachelor of Commerce (Industrial Relations) was taught for the first time. This was the first degree in the field offered by an Australian university. (V490 School of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour Annual Report 1995: 1) The Department of Industrial Relations appears to have been formed within the School of Economics sometime during 1961, presumably as a result of a re-organisation that took place following Professor M. C. Kemp's appointment as Head of School. Initially the department seems to have been run by senior lecturer Dr J. Child. (UNSW Calendar 1962: 65) In 1974 Dr John Niland was appointed as Professor of Economics and Head of the Department of Industrial Relations. (BRF - Niland, John) In July 1985 the Vice-Chancellor established a committee to review the faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies. One of the recommendations of the working party which was chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ronayne, was that a new School of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour comprising the present Department of Industrial Relations and the Organisational Behaviour Unit be established. (Focus 13 May 1988: 10). At the Council meeting on 11 July 1988 major administrative changes were instituted including that certain departments within the existing schools within the faculty become schools in their own right. As a consequence, the Department of Industrial Relations and the Organisational Behaviour Unit were merged to become the newly formed School of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90).     The Faculty of Technology was formed by Council on 14th May, 1956 (resolution 761i). This resolution also dictated that the Faculty would be concerned with developments in the Technologies of Fuel, Paint, Plastics and Rubber, and Ceramics and Nuclear Technology. The Faculty, under Professor D. W. Phillips, was initiated with five Schools Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering & Applied Geology, Metallurgy, Wool Technology and Textile Technology. The first meeting of the Faculty occurred on 29th June, 1956. On 9th May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). On 3 February 1986 this school was renamed the School of Mines (resolution 86/10). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4), as well as the School of Mines (resolution CL96/88/4 & CL97/5). As a result, from this date the Department of Applied Geology was transferred to the Faculty of Science & Technology.     On 5 September 1951 the head of Applied Chemistry, Professor Alexander, presented a report to the Personnel Committee of the Professorial Board, in which he outlined a proposed arrangement of his school into five departments - including the Department of Inorganic and General Chemistry. Although this was not formally approved by the Professorial Board, this arrangement seems to have been adopted by the school shortly afterwards, with the first head of department being Dr R. S. Nyholm (CN968/8, OH3). Sometime in late 1957, the School of Applied Chemistry had its name changed to the School of Chemistry. At the 7 July 1971 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee the department was re-named the Department of Inorganic Chemistry. On 9 March 1983 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved the renaming of the department as the Department of Inorganic and Nuclear Chemistry. On 14 April 1998 it was noted at the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Science & Technology that the Dean had indicated to the Vice-Chancellor that the School of Chemistry intended to disestablish its departments.     On 9 September 1985 the School of Biological Technologies was created within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (Council resolution 85/96). It initially had two departments - the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Food Science & Technology. The first head of school was Professor Ronald Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the school was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, as well as its two departments of Biotechnology and Food Science & Technology, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c).
