    Description
    On 12 September 1960 Council gave its approval for a full-time course in Ceramic Engineering to commence in the School of Chemical Technology in the Faculty of Applied Science from 1961 (resolution 60/131). At that time it was also noted that the appointment of an Associate Professor is envisaged in order to effectively develop the Department of Ceramic Engineering. Dr E. R. McCartney was appointed to this position of associate professor on 10 July 1961 (Council resolution 61/77). On 12 November 1979 as a result of the merger of the schools of Chemical Technology and Chemical Engineering, the department was moved to the School of Metallurgy effective from 1 January 1980 (Council resolution 79/157). Following a review of Faculty of Applied Science, on 9 September 1985 Council resolved to rename the School of Metallurgy as the School of Materials Science & Engineering and transfer all staff of the Department of Ceramic Engineering to the Department of Materials effective from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).     On 14 July 1952 Council appointed Dr F. H. Reuter to the position of Associate Professor in Food Technology (resolution 234). When he commenced in this post on 16 July 1952, the Department of Food Technology also came into being within the School of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Science (SRF - Food Technology, file 00048296 CN980/102). On 8 November 1954 Council approved the introduction of a full-time degree course in food technology (resolution 518). On 14 May 1956 Council created the Faculty of Technology (resolution 761i) and the School of Chemical Engineering, including the Department of Food Technology, was moved into this faculty. On 9 May 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 19 January 1976 Council made the department into a separate School of Food Technology within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 76/10).     Description
    On 10 May 1976 Council approved the dissolution of the School of Applied Physics & Optometry effective from 1 January 1977 and the establishment of a School of Optometry from the same date (resolution 76/67). Thus, while the department of Applied Physics was returned to the School of Physics, the department of Optometry became its own school within the Faculty of Science. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Optometry was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). At the same meeting, the name of the school was changed to become the School of Optometry & Vision Science within the new faculty with effect from the same date (resolution CL001/50b). In 2008 the head of the School of Optometry & Vision Science was Associate Professor Fiona Stapleton.     On 5 September 1951 the head of Applied Chemistry, Professor Alexander, presented a report to the Personnel Committee of the Professorial Board, in which he outlined a proposed arrangement of his school into five departments - including the Department of Analytical Chemistry. Although this was not formally approved by the Professorial Board, this arrangement seems to have been adopted by the school shortly afterwards, with the first head of department being A. Bryson (CN980/6 - 00046006). Sometime in late 1957, the School of Applied Chemistry had its name changed to the School of Chemistry. On 14 April 1998 it was noted at the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Science & Technology that the Dean had indicated to the Vice-Chancellor that the School of Chemistry intended to disestablish its departments.     On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering together to form the new School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective 1 January 1980 within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 79/157). The first Head of School was Professor David Trimm. On 2 December 1996 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Applied Science - effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). Consequently, from this date the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry was moved to the Faculty of Engineering. At the 10 April 2006 meeting of Council the school's name was changed to the School of Chemical Sciences & Engineering (resolution CL06/18). On 29 January 2010 the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approved the change in name of the school to the School of Chemical Engineering (file 2002/2060).     The first chair in geography was created at the 8 March 1965 meeting of Council (resolution 65/25) within the Faculty of Applied Science. At the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee (Personnel) meeting on 12 May 1965, it was determined that the chair would head the School of Geography. On 8 November 1965 J. A. Mabbutt was appointed to this position (resolution 65/164) and so the School of Geography came into being with Professor Mabbutt as its first head. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). On 3 February 1997 Council determined that the School of Geography would be located in the Faculty of Science & Technology from this date (resolution CL97/5). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Geography (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Geography in order to form a School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     The Department of Economics appears to have been formed within the School of Economics in the Faculty of Commerce sometime during 1961, presumably as a result of a re-organisation that took place following Professor M. C. Kemp's appointment as Head of School. (UNSW Calendar 1962: 65) As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 November 1997 the dean of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics approved a proposal for all departments in the School of Economics to be disestablished effective from 31 December 1997 (file 972583). The Department of Economics thus ceased to exist from this date.     Description
    On 28 September 1988 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved the creation of the Centre for Particle and Catalyst Technologies within the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry in the Faculty of Applied Science. The main aim of the Centre was to encourage and facilitate research in particulate systems and heterogenous catalysis undertaken within the university by promoting unique university facilities as services available to industry and government bodies. The first director of the Centre was Associate Professor Mark Wainwright (file 881038). On 2 December 1996 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Applied Science - effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). Consequently, from this date the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry, including the Centre, was moved to the Faculty of Engineering. On 8 March 2004 the director of the Centre, Professor Rose Amal, notified the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) that the Centre was in the process of being disestablished (file 881038).     Mr N. Y. Kirov took up his duties as Senior Lecturer in Fuel Technology within the School of Mining Engineering & Applied Geology in the Faculty of Technology on 18 June 1958 (Council 8 September 1958, resolution 58/101). Thus the Department of Fuel Technology came into being with Mr Kirov at its head (Fuel Technology Advisory Panel, CN913). On 9 May, 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 9 September 1963 Council approved the transfer of the department to the School of Chemical Engineering (resolution 63/11), which was effective from 1 October 1963 (file 00015949). On 12 November 1979 Council approved the transfer of the department to the newly formed School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry to be effective from 1 January 1980 (resolution 79/157). In October 1996 Associate Professor G. D. Sergeant - then head of the Department of Fuel Technology - retired (file 921049).
