    Description
    The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.     On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering together to form the new School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective 1 January 1980 within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 79/157). The first Head of School was Professor David Trimm. On 2 December 1996 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Applied Science - effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). Consequently, from this date the School of Chemical Engineering and Industrial Chemistry was moved to the Faculty of Engineering. At the 10 April 2006 meeting of Council the school's name was changed to the School of Chemical Sciences & Engineering (resolution CL06/18). On 29 January 2010 the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approved the change in name of the school to the School of Chemical Engineering (file 2002/2060).     The Faculty of Technology was formed by Council on 14th May, 1956 (resolution 761i). This resolution also dictated that the Faculty would be concerned with developments in the Technologies of Fuel, Paint, Plastics and Rubber, and Ceramics and Nuclear Technology. The Faculty, under Professor D. W. Phillips, was initiated with five Schools Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering & Applied Geology, Metallurgy, Wool Technology and Textile Technology. The first meeting of the Faculty occurred on 29th June, 1956. On 9th May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     On 9 September 1985 the School of Biological Technologies was created within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (Council resolution 85/96). It initially had two departments - the Department of Biotechnology and the Department of Food Science & Technology. The first head of school was Professor Ronald Edwards. On 11 July 1988 the school was renamed the School of Applied Bioscience (Council resolution 88/85). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Applied Bioscience was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Applied Bioscience (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, as well as its two departments of Biotechnology and Food Science & Technology, effective 31 December 2001 (resolution CL001/84c).     The School of Applied Psychology had much of its roots in the Department of Applied Psychology of the Sydney Technical College, but it was only on 12 May 1952 that Council created a chair in this field (resolution 218). On 9 November 1953 J. F. Clark was appointed to this position and so the School of Applied Psychology in the Faculty of Science came into being on 1 January 1954 with Professor Clark at its head (resolution 369). On 14 May 1956 Council moved the school to the Faculty of Humanities & Social Sciences (resolution 761). On 9 March 1959 the school was moved back to the Faculty of Science (Council resolution 59/56). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) and so the school became one of the first six schools within this new faculty. On 13 November 1972 the school was renamed the School of Psychology (Council resolution 72/224). At the 9 March 1987 meeting of Council the faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Psychology was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Psychology (resolution CL001/49).     The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biological Science, Geology and Geography (resolution CL001/84). The first head of school was Professor Peter Greenaway. In 2006 the head of the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences was Associate Professor Paul Adam.     On 19 January 1976 Council made the Department of Food Technology into a separate School of Food Technology within the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 76/10). On 13 May 1985 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Food Science & Technology (resolution 85/54). On 9 September 1985 the school was redesignated the Department of Food Science & Technology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96).     On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). At the same time the Department of Biochemistry was redesignated the School of Biochemistry and became one of the first six schools within the new faculty. The first head of school was Professor E. O. Thompson. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). On 5 August 1991 the school was re-named the School of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics (resolution CL91/50). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics, effective 31 December 2001 in order to form a new School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences (resolution CL001/84c).     On 30 July 1965 the Vice-Chancellor Professor J. P. Baxter wrote to Mr A. Strom, Chairman of the Fauna Protection Panel following Mr Strom's kind offer to assist the university in a establishing a Marsupial Research Station on land under the control of the Fauna Protection Panel at Berowra. In a responding letter on 13 August 1965, Mr Strom noted that the Fauna Protection Panel has agreed in principle to the establishment of the Marsupial Research Station for the University of New South Wales at the Hallstrom Faunal Research [No. 15 at Cowan]. In a letter to the Minister for Education, the Hon C. B. Cutler, dated 30 July 1965, the Vice-Chancellor also noted that the main aim of the station was to obtain the best facilities that are available for the newly appointed foundation professor of zoology, Dr G. B. Sharman, who was to commence at the university on the 1st January 1966 and it is imperative that accommodation for his marsupial research be available by this date as he is bringing with him his mob of kangaroos and wallabies. The station thus appears to have into existence from the date that Professor Sharman entered on duty and seems to have been managed by the Department of Zoology in the School of Biological Sciences (file 00370998). On 6 July 1966 the Associate Bursar provided a file note indicating that all university research stations should be called 'field stations', prefaced in each case by the locality name. On 23 August 1966 the Dean of the Faculty of Science, Professor B. J. Ralph, wrote to the Bursar, Mr. E. H. Davis, confirming that it has been decided that the field station at Cowan will be known as the 'Cowan Field Station' (file 00014498). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). At the same time the Department of Zoology was redesignated the School of Zoology and so the Field Station came under the remit of this school. On 6 October 1976 arrangements for the Field Station became more formalised, when a licence agreement with the National Parks & Wildlife Service for occupation of the Cowan Field Station until 31 December 1990, including first option for renewal, was executed under seal of the university (file 00371253). At the 13/21 July 1987 meetings of Council, the amalgamation of the schools of Botany and Zoology to form the School of Biological Science was approved, to be effective from 1 January 1988, and the Field Station thus became managed by this school. At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Biological Science was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 25 October 1994 the licence agreement with the National Parks & Wildlife Service was extended for a further twenty year period (file 023809). On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Biological Science (resolution CL001/49). The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES) was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biological Science, Geology and Geography (resolution CL001/84).     Dr Bernhard J. Ralph took up duties on 3 January 1950 as a Lecturer in Biochemistry within the Department of Applied Chemistry. In September 1950 Dr Ralph was promoted to senior lecturer. At the same time a small Department of Biological Sciences was created with Dr Ralph at its head within the larger Department of Applied Chemistry in the Faculty of Science (BRF - B. J. Ralph, Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel 22 July 1952 papers - file 00046006). On 10 September 1951 the Department of Applied Chemistry was re-designated as the School of Applied Chemistry, with the Department of Biological Sciences remaining a part of the new school (Council resolution 153). On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences was changed into a School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science with Dr Ralph becoming an associate professor and head of school (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments - biochemistry, botany, microbiology and zoology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913).
