    Description
    On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences became the School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments, including the Department of Microbiology (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). The first chair in microbiology was filled at the 8 May 1961 meeting of Council (resolution 61/59) with Professor M. R. J. Salton appointed to the position. On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108) - with microbiology becoming one of the first six schools within the faculty.     On 11 July 1960 the Council resolved that approval be given to immediate action being taken with a view to the acquisition by the university of the following areas for biological field stations: i) an area of Crown land on the south side of Smith Lake, which is 180 road miles from Sydney and 15 miles south of Forster, having a half mile frontage to the Pacific Ocean with a depth of one and a half miles to Smith Lake, together with an island in the lake; ii) two adjacent twenty-acre plots of rain forest and sclerophyll forest, respectively, which are located in the Wallangat State Forest and are accessible to and within easy distance of the main Smith Lake area. These initial requirements were altered slightly and following negotiations with the NSW Government, in Gazette No. 97 of 9 September 1966, the NSW Governor appointed the university as trustee of Reserve No. 85,893 at Smith's Lake, parish of Forster, county of Gloucester, notified 22nd July, 1966, for Promotion of the Study and the Preservation of Native Flora and Fauna. On 6 July 1966 the Associate Bursar had provided a file note indicating that all university research stations should be called 'field stations', prefaced in each case by the locality name. Thus the station at Smith's Lake officially became known as Smith's Lake Field Station (file 00014498). Shortly afterwards, the erection of a small Laboratory building was commenced, which was completed by early December. The Field Station appears to have been operated by the Department of Zoology (file 00371027). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). At the same time the Department of Zoology was redesignated the School of Zoology and so the Field Station came under the remit of this school. Under Government Gazette No. 10, published on 25 January 1980, an area of land surrounding and including the Field Station was added to the Myall Lakes National Park. As a result the land was no longer under the trusteeship of the university and had instead reverted to the Minister for Lands. On 15 September 1980 A. J. Foster, the Regional Secretary for the Central Region, National Parks and Wildlife Service, wrote to the university indicating that the Service would wish to commence discussions on the future use, and occupancy, of the research station by the university with a view to determining the need to execute formal leasing/licensing agreements (file 00371030). On 20 January 1990 a lease agreement with the National Parks & Wildlife Service was executed under seal for the university's use of the land for the Field Station until 13 October 2006 (file 00019789). At the 13/21 July 1987 meetings of Council, the amalgamation of the schools of Botany and Zoology to form the School of Biological Science was approved, to be effective from 1 January 1988, and the Field Station thus became managed by this school. At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Biological Science was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 Jun, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Life Sciences and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001- including the School of Biological Science (resolution CL001/49). The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences (BEES) was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biological Science, Geology and Geography (resolution CL001/84). The Field Station therefore became a part of this new school from this date. A renewal of the Smith's Lake lease agreement with the National Parks & Wildlife Service appears to have been signed during 2006 (files 910996 and 2003/2114).     The first chair in geography was created at the 8 March 1965 meeting of Council (resolution 65/25) within the Faculty of Applied Science. At the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee (Personnel) meeting on 12 May 1965, it was determined that the chair would head the School of Geography. On 8 November 1965 J. A. Mabbutt was appointed to this position (resolution 65/164) and so the School of Geography came into being with Professor Mabbutt as its first head. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). On 3 February 1997 Council determined that the School of Geography would be located in the Faculty of Science & Technology from this date (resolution CL97/5). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Geography (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Geography in order to form a School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84). At the same time the department was redesignated the School of Zoology and became one of the first six schools within the new faculty. The first head of school was Professor G. B. Sharman. At the 9th March, 1987 meeting of Council the Faculty's name was altered to the Faculty of Biological & Behavioural Sciences (resolution 87/31). At the 13/21 July 1987 meetings of Council, the amalgamation of the school with the School of Botany to form the new School of Biological Science was approved, to be effective from 1 January 1988 (resolution 87/69d).     The Department of Chemical Engineering dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. The first head was Professor J. P. Baxter, who commenced in his position on 16 January 1950. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Chemical Engineering became one of the first three departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Chemical Engineering came into existence (resolution 153). On 14 May 1956 Council created the Faculty of Technology (resolution 761i) and the School of Chemical Engineering was moved into this faculty. On 9 May 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering to form the School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective from 1 January 1980 (resolution 79/157). As a result, the School of Chemical Engineering ceased to exist from this date. There are threee types of reports included in the series - the first is the original report of the school to the Visiting Committee, the second is this original report bound together with the minutes of the Visiting Committee's meeting, which was then submitted to Council and the third are loose minutes for the Visiting Committee meetings.\r\nThe Archives does not hold any copies of the reports of the school to the Visiting Committee for the years 1979 - 1980, 1987 - 1989 and 1991 onwards or Visiting Committee reports to Council for the years 1969 - 70 or 1987 onwards. Separate copies of the Visiting Committee minutes are only held for the years 1969 - 1970 and 1986.

    The School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biochemistry & Molecular Genetics and Microbiology & Immunology, as well as the Department of Biotechnology (resolution CL001/84). The first head of school was Professor Peter Little. In 2007 the Head of School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences was Professor Pauline Doran.     On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108). At the same time the Department of Biochemical Engineering was redesignated the School of Biological Technology and became one of the first six schools within the new faculty. On 4 February 1980 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Biotechnology (resolution 80/14). On 9 September 1985 the school was redesignated the Department of Biotechnology and moved to the newly created School of Biological Technologies within the Faculty of Applied Science with effect from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96).     On 12 November 1956 the Department of Biological Sciences became the School of Biological Sciences in the Faculty of Science and Dr Bernhard J. Ralph was appointed Associate Professor and head of school (Council resolution 839ii). The School was then administratively organised into four departments, including the Department of Biochemistry (Biological Sciences Advisory Panel, CN913). On 11 March, 1957 Council clarified the designation of Dr Ralph's appointment as being Associate Professor of Biochemistry (resolution 57/4). On 9 March 1959 Associate Professor Ralph was appointed the Foundation Professor of Biochemistry (resolution 59/3). On 8 July 1968 Council approved the creation of the Faculty of Biological Science effective from 1 July 1968 (resolution 68/108).
