    On 12 April 1965 the Vice-Chancellor Professor J. P. Baxter wrote to the Minister for Lands, the Hon K. C. Compton, to enquire whether the Fowler's Gap Reserve in the neighbourhood of Broken Hill, which has been used recently by the Conservation Commission...[could] be made available to the University of New South Wales. It was also noted that the reserve has about 90,000 acres and is approximately 60 miles from Broken Hill and that the university has for some time been considering the desirability of establishing an experimental area in arid zone country...aris[ing] from the work of several different university departments. On 17 August 1965 the Minister for Lands the Hon T. L. Lewis approved a lease to the university for an initial term of ten years, commencing from 1 January 1966. Mr T. K. Hogan, Director of the Broken Hill Division of the university, was initially appointed Executive Director of the Station (file 00370994). On 8 November 1965 Council adopted the resolutions ii) that Council accepts the property known as Fowler's Gap upon the terms and conditions set out in a letter from the Minister for Lands to the university and iii) that Fowler's Gap be administered as part of the Broken Hill Division (resolution 65/163). On 6 July 1966 the Associate Bursar provided a file note indicating that all university research stations should be called 'field stations', prefaced in each case by the locality name. Thus the station at Fowler's Gap officially became known as Fowler's Gap Field Station (file 00014498). On 29 September 1966 the Vice-Chancellor wrote to the Minister for Lands advising that a Fowler's Gap Consultative Committee was to be established to furnish advice to the Council of the university on matters relating to the activities and development of the Fowler's Gap arid zone research station. The inaugural Chairman of the Committee was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor J. F. Clark and the first meeting was held on 13 April 1967 (file 00020449). On 26 October 1971 the Vice-Chancellor Professor R. H. Myers wrote to the Minister for Lands, Mr T. L. Lewis to ask for an extension of the Fowler's Gap lease to a lease in perpetuity as the development of the research station and of research programmes would be assisted if the university knew that its future occupation was assured. On 24 January 1972 Council resolved that it approves the conditions proposed by the Minister for Lands for acceptance of the lease in perpetuity of Fowler's Gap Field Station to the university (resolution 72/9i). On 24 March 1972 Mr G. R. Woods, the Western Lands Commissioner, wrote to the Vice-Chancellor to inform him that the university's application for a lease in perpetuity had been successful (file 00370994). In 1980 the management structure of the Station was reviewed. A report was released by Pro-Vice-Chancellor R. M. Golding on 4 December 1980 and approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 19 December 1980. As a result from this date the management of the Station was via a Management Committee, although an officer-in-charge remained on site at the Station. Responsible to the Vice-Chancellor and chaired by a Pro-Vice-Chancellor, the main aim of the committee was to determine the utilisation of resources to maintain an adequate level of income and to meet the needs of the university in carrying out its teaching and research programmes at the field station. From December 1981 this structure was altered slightly, as although the Pro-Vice-Chancellor continued to serve on the Committee and be responsible for reporting to the Vice-Chancellor, the Chairman position was taken by A/Professor J. P. Kennedy (file 911521). During 1991 the Station organisation was restructured and the Officer-in-Charge position replaced by a Station Supervisor (file 971929). From 1 July 1992 senior management responsibility for the Station was changed to the Bursar (S329). In January 2003, following a staff restructure, Dr David Croft took up the position of on-site Director at the Station, while also holding a fractional position in the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences. The Director reports to the Management Committee, which continues to administer the Station (file 2002/2855). The status of Fowlers Gap Station in 2012 was located 112 km north of Broken Hill, New South Wales (latitude 31.09° S, longitude 142.70°E) in the Parish of Hume, County Mootwingee (Mutawintji). The Station occupies Western Lands Lease No. 10194, an area of 38,888 hectares., and is held by the University of New South Wales as a 'lease in perpetuity' for the purpose of research, grazing and tourism. The mission of the Station is to further understanding of the functioning of the arid zone of NSW through research, teaching, interpretation and knowledge diffusion in a pastoral context. It is the only research station in the arid zone of New South Wales and the winter rainfall area of arid Australia. Areas have been monitored and data collected continuously, in some cases for over 30 years. The Station and its records form a unique facility for research and education. The University of New South Wales, in taking over the lease, undertook to carry out research and provide facilities for relevant research programs that might be proposed by other universities and government organisations. Research or other academic endeavour has been conducted Schools/units of the University of New South Wales including: Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences, Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Fine Arts, the Faculty of Built Environment, the Centre for Photovoltaic Engineering and the Centre for Remote Sensing and GIS. Other tertiary institutions have also conducted research, chiefly, Macquarie University, University of Sydney, University of Newcastle, University of New England, the University of Adelaide, the Australian National University, Monash University, Melbourne University and La Trobe University. Two Cooperative Research Centres, Sustainable Tourism and Landscape Evolution & Mineral Exploration, have conducted research. Government organisations that have utilised the facilities include: the former Soil Conservation Service of New South Wales (now part of the Department of Infrastructure, Planning and Natural Resources), NSW Agriculture (now part of the Department of Primary Industries), Queensland DPI, SA Department of Agriculture, NSW Department of Environment and Conservation and several Divisions of CSIRO. Funding to support research has been provided by the University of New South Wales, Australian Research Council, Wool Research Trust Fund, Australian Wool Innovation, Meat and Livestock Australia, Rural Credits Development Fund, Water Research Foundation of Australia, Australian Housing Research Council, Cooperative Research Centre for Sustainable Tourism and a number of overseas governments and universities. In addition to its research function, Fowlers Gap is used extensively for teaching, largely by way of student field excursions. Regular users from UNSW include staff and students from the College of Fine Arts and the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences. Field training is conducted for students from several other educational institutions such as ANU and Adelaide University (CRC Landscape Evolution & Mineral Exploration training program), and Monash University (School of Geography and Environmental Science). The Station also attracts visitors from overseas and within Australia and has been the subject/site of numerous television documentaries, newspaper articles and local and national radio reports. The Field Station is administered by the Management Committee, consisting of representatives from those Schools of the University of New South Wales that use the Field Station. The Committee is assisted by two advisory groups - the Graziers' Committee, a small group of pastoralists who supply support and advice at an informal level, and the Consultative Committee, an advisory group representing organisations associated with the pastoral industry, land and wildlife conservation and other stakeholders in the West Darling region.     The establishment of the Building Research Centre was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 5 December 1984. The initial Director of the Centre was Professor A. R. Toakley and the Centre was located within the School of Building in the Faculty of Architecture. The main aim of the Centre was to co-ordinate and develop teaching and research in the multi-disciplinary area of the building process (file 00370312). In Unisearch's Annual Report for the year ending 31 March 1990, it was noted that the Building Research Centre would become a Division of Unisearch effective from April 1990 (V505). On 29 July 1998 Richard Sharp of Unisearch wrote to the Dean of the Faculty of the Built Environment outlining the arrangements whereby the Building Research Centre would be transferred back to the faculty effective from 1 August 1998 (file 970718). On 9 November 1998 Council approved the termination of the Building Research Centre Trust with the transfer of all funds to the UNSW Foundation (resolution CL98/81). On 6 October 1998 the Academic Board recommended to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) that the Australian Centre for Construction Innovation (ACCI) be established in the Faculties of the Built Environment and Engineering (resolution AB98/116). This was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 2 February 1999. The Centre was to build upon the achievements of the Building Research Centre, which [was] subsumed into the new structure (file 981602).     This series consists of photographs maintained by Byera Hadley, Lecturer-in-Charge of the architecture course at Sydney Technical College. The photographs feature some of the buildings or preparation for buildings he designed as an architect, while others appear to have been teaching aids. Some photos have not been dated.     On 7 May 1996 the Academic Board gave its approval for the establishment of a Centre for Olympic Studies (resolution AB96/25). The first director was Associate Professor Richard Cashman. Although the faculties of Arts & Social Sciences, Built Environment, COFA, Commerce & Economics and Professional Studies had all given their support to the proposal, the centre appears to have been administratively primarily centred in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. The Centre for Olympic Studies (COS) was launched on 21 May, 1996 by the Vice-Chancellor. Its aims were: - To coordinate and publicise university research and teaching on the Olympics - To ascertain areas where the University can assist in the successful organisation of the Sydney Olympics - To create contacts with academic institutions and with industry and government in the area of the Olympics - To develop Centre projects and to support consultancies by University staff to enable the Centre to become self-funding - To project the University's involvement in the Olympics, and other similar international events, as a form of community service - To gather information about the organisation of the Sydney Olympics, and other major international events, which will provide a research data base to assist in the organisation of similar future events In 2003 UNSW introduced a new policy that no Centre can exist on a continuing and permanent basis. It was deemed by UNSW that having contributed to research on the Sydney 2000 Olympic and Paralympic Games, the Centre should cease to operate effective 31 March, 2004. The School of Leisure, Sport & Tourism at the University of Technology, Sydney (UTS) did, however, take over some of the work of the UNSW Centre, including the web site, library and archival collection.     On 6 October 1998 the Academic Board recommended to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) that the Australian Centre for Construction Innovation (ACCI) be established in the Faculties of the Built Environment and Engineering (resolution AB98/116). This was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 2 February 1999. The first director of the Centre was Associate Professor Marton Marosszeky. The Centre was to build upon the achievements of the Building Research Centre, which [was] subsumed into the new structure. The main purpose of the Centre was to: - conduct independent and collaborative research into construction processes and techniques - develop new tools for construction planning and process control and management - develop interdisciplinary links, drawing together academics researching aspects of construction throughout UNSW - network with researchers in other universities and encourage collaboration between them and industry - communicate the outcomes of the research to industry through workshops and short courses (file 981602).     On 2 May 2006 the Academic Board noted the establishment of the Centre for Health Assets Australasia (resolution AB06/38ii). It had, however, already been in operation since 1 January 2005, following the provision of major funding from the Health Capital and Asset Managers' Consortium of Australia and New Zealand (HCAMC), with a contract being signed to this effect by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Wainwright on 17 December 2004. The main aim of the Centre was to become the leading Health Asset and Facility Management body in Australia and New Zealand. The Centre was located within the Faculty of the Built Environment with Ms Jane Carthey as the initial director (file 2005/1030).     The Council agreed to the formation of the Academic Board at its 2nd February, 1987 meeting (resolution 87/13a). The Board's establishment became more official on 14th September, 1987, with Council approving changes to Chapter III of the by-laws that put the Academic Board in place of the Professorial Board as the senior academic body of the University (resolution 87/99c). The Academic Board formally began its operations from 1st July, 1988. Under the by-laws (III, 1), its members were: a) the Chancellor b) the Deputy Chancellor c) the Vice-Chancellor d) the Academic Registrar e) the persons appointed by the Council to be the deans of the faculties, the Rector, University College, Australian Defence Force Academy and the Director, Australian Graduate School of Management f) the persons elected to the chairs of the faculties, of the Academic Board of the University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, and of boards of studies having the status or responsibilities of faculties g) a Pro-Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Vice-Chancellor h) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time professors of the University i) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time non-professorial members of the academic staff j) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a degree of bachelor, elected by and from the undergraduate students k) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a higher degree or graduate diploma, elected by and from the postgraduate students l) such other persons as the Council may appoint after considering the advice of the Academic Board. The Board continued on similar lines to the Professorial Board, with the Academic Board having the responsibility of furthering and co-ordinating the work of the faculties and board of studies and of encouraging scholarship and research, and with advising the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters of policy relating to the academic activities and the academic structure and development of the University (III, 2, a). The by-laws also dictated the election of a President and Deputy President from the members of the Board (III, 10, 1). The Academic Board held its first meeting on 5th July, 1988. At this meeting Professor D. J. Anderson was elected the first President and Dr J. Y. Morrison first Deputy President of the Board. Four Standing Committees were established - the Policy Advisory Committee, the Postgraduate Studies Committee, the Undergraduate Studies Committee and an Academic Planning & Services Committee (resolution 88/21). An Agenda Committee was also formed (resolution 88/20). In 1996 changes were made to the By-laws that affected the Academic Board. The number of members rose, with the two Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Dean of the Australian Graduate School of Management added to the Board (4, 48). Under the new by-laws (49, 1) the Board's functions are: a) to be the principal academic body of the University; and b) to further and co-ordinate the work of the faculties, boards of studies and other academic units, and to encourage teaching, scholarship and research; and c) to advise the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters relating to teaching, scholarship and research within the University; and d) to consider and report on matters referred to it by the Council or by the Vice-Chancellor; and e) to have such functions of the Council as the Council may, from time to time, delegate to it. As well, along with the President, there were now two Deputy Presidents elected (50, 1). In 2013, the President of the Academic Board was Professor Prem Ramburuth, with Associate Professor David Cohen and Associate Professor Stephen Fortescue as Deputy Presidents. The Board also had seven Committees - Academic Board Advisory Committee, Committee on Research, Higher Degree Research Committee, Committee on Education, Postgraduate Coursework Committee, Undergraduate Studies Committee and the Pre-University and Alternative Education Committee.     The formation of the Professorial Board was provided for in Chapter III of the by-laws passed by Council on 12th September, 1949 (resolution 5). These stated that the Professors and Associate Professors in the several Faculties and such other persons as Council may appoint shall form a Board, to be called the Professorial Board (III, 1). The Board was to be specially charged with the duty of furthering and co-ordinating the work of Faculties and Departments and of encouraging scholarship and research and of considering the studies and discipline of the University (III, 4, i). Specifically the Board could consider reports made to it by any faculty, appoint internal and external examiners, prescribe books and details of subjects for lectures, determine the conditions of competition for any post-graduate award, decide all questions of admission ad eundem gradum and advanced standing and submit recommendations to Council regarding teaching staff and academic standing (III, 4, ii). As well, any member of the Professorial Board was given the power to suspend any student, as long as the misconduct occurred in the Department or presence of the member (III, 5, a). The by-laws also dictated that the first Chairman of the Professorial Board would be elected in May, 1950 (III, 2). Meetings would be held at the discretion of the Chairman or at the written request of the President, Director or three members of the Board (III, 6, a). At the 13th March, 1950 meeting of Council it was determined that until July, 1950, the professors already appointed should act as a committee with authority to consider all matters which, in accordance with the provision of Chapter III of the By-laws (the Professorial Board), shall be within the jurisdiction of the Professorial Board when constituted (resolution 40ii). The first meeting of Professorial staff had in fact already taken place on 1st February, 1950, with Director A. Denning as Chairman, and meetings were held generally on a weekly basis until the end of June. Under the provision in the by-laws, on 31st May, 1950 Denning was formally elected as Chairman of the Professorial Board. The first committees of the Professorial Board were determined at the Professorial Committee's meeting on 6th June, 1950. These were Buildings & Sites, Equipment & Supplies, Research, Graduate School & Post-Graduate Studies, Publications & Library, Academic Studies & Standards and Staff & Students. The Professorial Board held its first official meeting on 4th July, 1950. At this meeting, the membership of the first seven committees named by the Professorial Committee on the 6th June was finalised. By the time of the last meeting of the Board on 7th June, 1988, approximately eighty committees had come and gone throughout the Board's existence. At the 14th September, 1987 meeting of Council changes to Chapter III of the by-laws were passed (resolution 87/99c). As a result, effective July 1988, the Professorial Board ceased to exist and the Academic Board was established in its place.
