    On 4 March 1998 the Executive Committee of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics gave its approval for the introduction of a disciplinary stream in Actuarial Studies within the School of Economics (resolution CEE98/30) and so the Actuarial Studies Unit effectively came into being from this date. In January 1998 Professor Michael Sherris had been initially appointed a Visiting Professor with the faculty to develop the academic programs in the actuarial studies area (file 931102 19 June letter from Professor Roger Layton to Vice-Chancellor Professor John Niland), but soon afterwards he was appointed as a permanent chair and head of the Unit. At some time during 2002 the Actuarial Studies Unit appears to have moved from the School of Economics to the School of Accounting (2002 and 2003 Calendars). On 3 July 2006 Council proposed the amalgamation of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management into the newly formed Faculty of Business and consequently Actuarial Studies became part of this faculty, seemingly as an independent unit (resolution CL06/68). The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, but by 18 June 2007 the name of the faculty was changed to the Australian School of Business at UNSW (Council resolution CL07/33). At the 2 August 2011 Academic Board meeting it was recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approve the establishment of the School of Risk and Actuarial Studies (replacing the Actuarial Studies Unit) in the Australian School of Business, effective 1 January 2012 (resolution AB11/46).     The Faculty Board & Standing Committee of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics was created at the 13th December, 1999 meeting of Council, when changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee (and optionally a Higher Degree Committee) and a Faculty Education Committee (or optionally an Undergraduate Education Committee & Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution CL99/81). At this time, there was also a division of duties between the Secretariat and the Faculty, whereby the Secretariat was only responsible for the Board & Standing Committees - the rest of the Committees were left up to the Faculty. Consequently this series only holds items from the Board & Standing Committees. The material is typed and is maintained in manilla folders with documents generally arranged in chronological order. The minutes are normally presented first, followed by the agenda and any papers that were circulated prior to the meeting. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Faculty. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Faculty.

    On 14 February 1980 the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Professor R. E. Vowels, approved the establishment of the Industrial Relations Research Unit within the Department of Industrial Relations in the School of Economics in the Faculty of Commerce, as the result of a successful General Development Grant funding application. At the same time Professor John Niland was appointed as the Unit's first director. The main aim of the Unit was to help focus and stimulate industrial relations research in Australia (file 032680). At the 23 July 1980 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee, the Unit was redesignated the Industrial Relations Research Centre. In July 1985 the Vice-Chancellor established a committee to review the faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies. One of the recommendations of the working party which was chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ronayne, was that a new School of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour comprising the present Department of Industrial Relations and the Organisational Behaviour Unit be established. (Focus 13 May 1988: 10). At the Council meeting on 11 July 1988 major administrative changes were instituted including that certain departments within the existing schools within the faculty become schools in their own right. As a consequence, the Department of Industrial Relations and the Organisational Behaviour Unit were merged to become the newly formed School of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour effective 1 August 1988. At the same time, Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics (resolution 88/90). The Centre thus became a part of the new school from this date. On 21 June 2004 Council resolved to disestablish the schools of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour and International Business within the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and established a new school, the School of Organisation and Management (resolution CL04/81). The Centre was thus moved to the new school from this date. On 3 July 2006 Council proposed the amalgamation of the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management into the newly formed Faculty of Business and consequently the School of Organisation and Management, including the Industrial Relations Research Centre, became part of this faculty (resolution CL06/68). The inaugural meeting of the faculty took place on 23 November 2006, but by 18 June 2007 the name of the faculty was changed to the Australian School of Business at UNSW (Council resolution CL07/33).     This series contains the prospectus / handbooks of the Faculty of Commerce / Faculty of Commerce & Economics. Each item is a typed, paper-bound volume, which were released on a yearly basis and contains information about the courses available in the faculty, including subject descriptions. In 1957 a prospectus was released, which was later replaced by more comprehensive handbooks. From 1976 copies of the handbook are also included in the bound versions of the university calendar. From 2002 this series of faculty handbooks were replaced by a new series of Undergraduate and Postgraduate handbooks.
