    On 5 June 1995 Council approved a change in name and status for the Department of Legal Studies and Taxation in the Faculty of Commerce & Economics and thus the School of Business Law and Taxation replaced the department from this date (resolution CL95/40). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The School thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 7 September 2010 the Academic Board recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor, and President of the Academic Board approve the disestablishment of the Australian School of Taxation and the School of Business Law and Taxation, and, as a concomitant action, approve the establishment of the Australian School of Taxation and Business law within the Australian School of Business, effective 1 January 2011 (resolution AB10/101). This was approved on 20 September 2010 (file 2002/2060). The School of Business Law and Taxation thus ceased to exist from 1 January 2011.     On 12 July 1954 Council in principle approved the formation of the Faculty of Commerce and at the same time resolved to establish a foundation chair in accountancy (resolution 431iii). On 11 July 1955 (resolution 599) Council accepted the appointment of E. B. Smyth to this chair and when he took up his position on 29 August 1955, the School of Accountancy was formed with Professor Smyth as the first head of school. The establishment of the Faculty of Commerce was officially approved at the 11th March 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37), with Accounting as one of the faculty's first three schools. As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time all departments within the School of Accountancy were made either schools in their own right or independent departments. This included the Department of Accounting - and as a result of it becoming a school, it effectively replaced the School of Accountancy from this date. In 2006 the School of Accounting was headed by Professor Wai Fong Chua. As a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, the school became part of the Faculty of Business from 23 November 2006. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.     In July 1985 the Vice-Chancellor established a committee to review the faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies. One of the recommendations of the working party which was chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ronayne, was that a new School of Information Systems be established by altering the status of the present Department of Information Systems. (Focus 13 May 1988: 10) At the Council meeting on 11 July 1988 major administrative changes were instituted including that the name of the faculty be changed from the Faculty of Commerce to the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and that certain departments within the existing schools within the faculty become schools in their own right. As a consequence, the Department of Information Systems within the School of Accountancy became the School of Information Systems effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). During 1998 as part of the UNSW 2000 restructuring discussions were held with the School of Information, Library and Archive Studies about the feasibility of a merger. (SRF - UNSW - SILAS) At a Council meeting on 7 June 1999 the School of Information Systems and the School of Information, Library and Archive Studies were formally disestablished and a new school to be known as the School of Information Systems, Technology and Management was established.     In a document to the Australian Graduate School of Management Board dated February 1987, it was noted that the Centre for Applied Marketing (CAM) had been approved within the AGSM's Centre for Management Research and Development Ltd (CMRD) by CMRD's Board with Dr J. H. Roberts as the director (file 880749). In the Centre's 1990 annual report, it was stated that Dr Roberts had taken up this appointment on 9 March 1987 and that the main aim of the centre was to conduct major research projects to increase the understanding of consumer behaviour and marketing in the Australian context and to assist Australian marketing managers to apply state of the art techniques (file 2003/2403). On 28 September 1990 the name of the CMRD was changed to AGSM Ltd (file 892164) and so from this date the operations of the Centre fell under this body file (file 2003/2403). In early 1998 the Centre became a joint operation between the Australian Graduate School of Management and the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, with the principle aims of the Centre noted as being to act as a bridge between UNSW and Australian industry to allow for the dissemination of marketing knowledge (file 990795). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The Centre thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33).     In 2004 UNSW Council decided to establish a UNSW research and teaching campus in Singapore. Known as UNSW Asia, this was to become Singapore's first comprehensive private university to open for business in 2007. (Council resolutions CL 04/47, 04/122, 05/14). The venture also had unanimous support from the Academic Board whose members saw it as an opportunity to attract quality staff and raise UNSW's academic standing. The university already had a long term relationship with the region and felt it was important to have an educational presence in Asia. It was expected that the university's profile would be greatly enhanced by being the first foreign university in Singapore. Singapore at the time was pursuing a long term plan to establish itself as a major educational hub in the region with its government investing substantial funds in education. As part of this plan the Singaporean government had approached several foreign universities gauging their interest in setting up a university in Singapore and subsequently invited UNSW to establish a campus there. Following its decision to establish a campus in Singapore the university signed an agreement with the Economic Development Board of Singapore for financial and other support for UNSW Asia over its initial years of operation. UNSW Asia was fully owned and operated by UNSW which set up UNSW Asia Limited as a company for the purposes of establishing and operating UNSW Asia. (CL05/14, 05/49). In October 2005 UNSW announced the appointment of Professor Greg Whittred, then Dean of the faculty of Commerce and Economics at UNSW, as the first President of UNSW Asia. Professor Whittred took up his position as inaugural President in November 2005. UNSW Asia was set up to be fee based with instruction in English. The university expected to make losses in the first few years of operations, but expected UNSW Asia to carry itself within ten years. The initial enrolment was expected to be around 300 students in first semester with about 500 students in second semester growing to 15,000 students within 15-20 years. Academic courses were to be based on three academic clusters: science, engineering, technology and health; commerce, humanities, media and design; and a graduate school. A permanent home for UNSW Asia was planned as a garden campus in South Changi with construction starting in 2006 and the campus to open in 2009. UNSW Asia commenced operations at Tanglin Campus, Kay Siang Road, Singapore, former home of the Republic Polytechnic. UNSW Asia opened its doors as planned with its first intake of undergraduate students commencing their courses in March 2007. Initial student enrolments only reached half the estimated numbers. Overall enrolment numbers for 2007 did not reach UNSW's expectations causing the university to revise its projections. As a result the university took the decision to close UNSW Asia at the end of first session on the 28th June 2007. This decision was announced to staff at UNSW Asia on 22 May and by media release and an email to all UNSW staff on 23 May 2007. Students enrolled at UNSW Asia in session one 2007 were offered a place in an equivalent program at UNSW Sydney from session two 2007, and scholarships to help with travel and accommodation costs. Students who transferred to UNSW Sydney received full credit for the studies they undertook at UNSW Asia, and retained credit for any advanced standing already granted. Tuition fees for these students were set at the publicised UNSW Asia rates. The three Singapore Universities - National University of Singapore (NUS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore Management University (SMU) - and some Singapore private education providers extended their deadline for application for the academic year 2007 to 4 June 2007 for the affected students enrolled in or who had accepted offers from UNSW Asia.     In 1969 the Australian Government appointed a committee of overseas experts headed by Dr Richard Cyert to advise on the future needs for graduate management in Australia. On 19 January 1970 Council endorsed the beginning of negotiations for the establishment of a national graduate school of business at the university (resolution 70/13). When the Cyert Committee submitted the Report of the Committee of Inquiry into postgraduate education for management in March 1970, it advised that the University of New South Wales was the university best placed to provide the desirable environment for a national business school of the highest quality. In August 1973 the Australian Government gave its agreement for the university to begin preliminary planning for the school and the university accepted the government's offer (10 September 1973 Council resolution 73/185). On 12 November 1973 Council created an interim board of management, who were to be responsible for planning the development of the new school (resolution 73/236). On 11 March 1974 the new school was named the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/24ii). On 11 November 1974 Professor Philip Brown was appointed as the foundation Professor of Management and Director of the Australian Graduate School of Management (Council resolution 74/202). He took up the position on 1 January 1975 and the school began its first classes on 7 March 1977 (SRF - AGSM). On 1 June 1998 Council gave its approval to the merger of the AGSM with the University of Sydney's Graduate School of Business to form a new Australian Graduate School of Management as a joint venture between the two universities, effective from the first academic term in 1999 (resolution 98/38). On 11 November 2005 it was announced that the University of Sydney had decided to cease its participation in the AGSM joint venture with UNSW. Consequently AGSM reverted to being solely owned by UNSW (SRF - AGSM). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Australian Graduate School of Management, subject to the approval of the Academic Board. The Faculty was to be amalgamated with the Faculty of Commerce & Economics to form the new Faculty of Business. The Board approved this on 1 August 2006 (resolution AB06/91) and at the Board's 7 November 2006 meeting, it noted that the Faculty of Commerce & Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management should be considered to have ceased to have the functions and powers of faculties after [the first Faculty Board meeting of the Faculty of Business on Thursday 23 November 2006]' (resolution AB06/139). Thus the AGSM as a business unit ceased operations, although courses under the AGSM brand continued operation after this date within the Faculty of Business.
