    Description
    On 10 July 1996 a Memorandum of Understanding agreement was signed that enabled the creation of the Centre for Sensory Research. The main aim of the Centre was to concentrate multi-disciplinary skills upon the scientific study of the chemical senses of humans and animals and apply this knowledge to solve technical, economic and social problems. Shortly afterwards the Centre appears to have become known as the Centre for Chemosensory Research (CCR). The Centre was attached equally to the faculties of Science, Biological & Behavioural Sciences and Medicine and commenced operations on 1 February 1997 with Associate Professor Graham Bell as the first director (file 961285). The Centre's facilities at Australian Technology Park opened in April 1997 (file 972357). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the faculties of Science and Biological & Behavioural Sciences were disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Centre was transferred jointly to the faculties of Life Sciences, Medicine and Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the faculties of Life Sciences and Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 (resolution CL001/49). Thus from this date the Centre was academically administered by the faculties of Science and Medicine. On 13 January 2003 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of the Centre for Chemosensory Research forthwith. This was finalised effective from 1 February 2003 (file 2004/1514).     Description
    On 5 June 1995 Council approved a change in name and status for the Asian Studies Unit in the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and thus the School of Asian Business and Language Studies replaced the Unit from this date (resolution CL95/40). On 23 February 1998 Council gave its approval to a change in name of the school to the School of International Business, effective 1 January 1998 (resolution CL98/15). On 21 June 2004 Council resolved to disestablish the schools of Industrial Relations and Organisational Behaviour and International Business and established a new school, the School of Organisation and Management (resolution CL04/81).     On 20 March 2006 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the Defence and Security Applications Research Centre. The Centre was located at UNSW@ADFA with Associate Professor Hussein A. Abbass as the first Director. The main aims of the Centre were: - to enhance the relationship between UNSW and the ADF by providing a world-class research centre that is responsive to the needs of the ADF; - to build the capacity to conduct highly innovative and cross-disciplinary research and to achieve recognition as outstanding world-leaders in the area of security and defence applications; - to enhance and build upon the existing network of UNSW@ADFA researchers; - to attract high quality research students to undertake cross-disciplinary security and defence projects; and - to undertake research that enhances Australia's future economic, social and cultural well-being (file 2006/0653).     In November 1977 around 150 university staff were invited to a meeting by the Vice-Chancellor to consider steps which might be taken to enhance the university's contribution to the study of Australia's energy problems. As a result of that meeting, a working party was formed to advise the Vice-Chancellor on the steps that the university might take. On 9 March 1978 the working party provided its final report, which suggested that a new centre be formed to be named the Energy Research, Development and Information Centre (ERDIC). On 10 May 1978 the Vice-Chancellor approved the establishment of the centre, which was to have the following functions: 1. to identify and report to the Vice-Chancellor on new directions for energy research, including technological, economic, environmental, social, conservational and educational aspects (especially continuing education), with a view to meeting the needs of the Australian community; 2. to facilitate and to generate funding opportunities for energy research within the university, both in existing schools and in new multi-disciplinary areas; 3. to be a vehicle for the receipt by the university of inquiries on energy research and development and for the formulation and submission of multi-disciplinary proposals by the university; 4. to catalyse the flow of information on energy, both within and from the university; 5. to advise on how the university library might become a resource centre for information on energy in Australia; 6. to consider and report on possible methods of funding the Centre in the future; and 7. to prepare and submit to the Vice-Chancellor within three months of the close of each calendar year an annual report of university activities in the field of energy. Associate Professor G. D. Sergeant took up the position as the first Director of the Centre. The Centre also had a Management Committee, which held its first meeting on 20 July 1978 (file 00032678). During 1985 the Centre was restructured and an Advisory Committee was created (file 033835, V243). As the result of a review of the Centre during 1996, from January 1997 ERDIC became a part of the Faculty of Engineering (file 921049). On 10 March 2005 the Centre's Management Committee recommended its closure effective from 31 December 2005.     On 12 September 1949 Council resolved that instruction in the humanities be compulsory in all faculties of the university and that discussion regarding the establishment of a chair in the humanities should begin (resolution 6). On 14 November 1949 it was formally affirmed that a chair in this field should be appointed. At the same time a Faculty of Humanities was established in principle (resolution 31). On 8 May 1950 R. M. Hartwell was named as the new chair (Council resolution 58). He commenced on duty on 14 December 1950 and thus the Department of Humanities & Social Sciences came into being from this date (UNSW: Its History & Progress). Lecturers representing the disciplines English, History, Philosophy, Economics and Government were gradually appointed to the department. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Humanities & Social Sciences came into existence (resolution 153). On 12th July, 1954 the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was formally established by Council (resolution 437g). It contained only the single School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was disestablished by Council on 9th November, 1959, to be effective from 31st December, 1959 (resolution 59/204i). Consequently the School of Humanities & Social Sciences also ceased to exist from this date.     On 9 May 1966 Council approved the establishment of a Chair of Finance (resolution 66/84). A fundraising committee for the Chair, made up of prominent businessmen, had been set up on 19 August 1965 and this was the primary instigation for the Chair's formal approval (file 00019921, CN1160/289). At Council's 13 November 1967 meeting, Dr R. C. Olsson was appointed to this chair (resolution 67/199vii). He commenced duty on 1 May 1968 and so the Department of Finance as an independent department within the Faculty of Commerce came into being. At the 13 September 1971 meeting of Council the Department of Finance was moved to the School of Accountancy (resolution 71/126). As a result of a review of the Faculty of Commerce, on 11 July 1988 Council altered the faculty's name to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). At the same time all departments within the School of Accountancy were made either schools in their own right or independent departments.     The Finance & Administration Committee of the Interim Council of Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) was established following the Rules of Procedure for the Interim Academy Council, as tabled Annex A 1/1982 at the first meeting of the Interim Council on 28 June 1982. [SERIES2828] The first meeting was held on 27 August 1982. The Finance & Administration Committee was to advise the Interim Council, the Secretary, Department of Defence, the Chief of Defence Force Staff and Vice-Chancellor of UNSW as appropriate on all aspects of the finance and administration of the Academy. Program of Work for Council and its Committees, Agendum 2/1982 from the Interim Council meeting 28 June 1982, lists the tasks that the Department of Defence has suggested for these bodies. The Finance & Administration Committee is tasked with; - allocation of responsibility of administrative services to be provided in common to the military component and the University College at the Academy (in line with the Agreement, which states services should be provided in common for efficiency and economy); - considering the February 1982 report "Computer Services for the Australian Defence Force Academy"; - considering proposals arising from reports by Academic Equipment Working Parties on relevant requirements and a proposed program of acquisition; - considering proposals for the physical transfer of existing functions to new buildings (some functions, e.g. the Royal Military College library and engineering departments, will occupy Academy buildings in 1984); - considering a proposed policy in relation to the leasing and administration of concession services; - transfer of staff to UNSW employment.     This series contains multiple copies of the Univeristy News. With the growth of the university 'University News' was produced by the Registrar on behalf of Council as a publication to amplify news about the university which may have appeared in the public press, to discuss planned developments within the university, to give news about individual members of staff their activities, appointments and peregrinations and to provide information about the workings and organization of the university. Generally it was published five times a year after each Council meeting. In 1968 looking at the role of the various university publications the issues were raised that more comment would be desirable, that consideration should be given to a campus reporter who should be used to follow up items of interest, that greater frequency of the publication was desirable, a change of address notification for alumni should be included and that the widest possible circulation amongst members of the university should be sought to complement the more specific funtion of the 'Information Sheet'. In 1974 'University News' received new looks, it went 'metric' and became slightly longer in size. The printing changed to the more fexible and economic webb offset which gave better photographic and typographic reproduction and it received a new masthead to go with its new paper size and typeface.

    In 1967 the School of Accountancy in the Faculty of Commerce introduced an elective subject within its Bachelor of Commerce Accountancy program called Data Processing and Information Systems (UNSW Calendar 1967 Vol 1: D92) and the following year a graduate level subject, Information Systems, was offered. (UNSW Calendar 1968 Vol 1: D101) In 1973 Information Systems became a compulsory subject, and in 1975 final year students were able to specialise in Information Systems in conjunction with their Accountancy major. (Howitt, G. History of Accounting Education and Research at the University of New South Wales 1990: 9 SRF - Accountancy, School of) A chair in Information Systems was created within the Faculty of Commerce in 1974 which was filled by Professor Cyril Brookes (Howitt: 9) and in 1977 the Department of Information Systems was established within the School of Accountancy. (V633/25 Report of the Committee to Review the Faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies, October 1987: 28) In July 1985 the Vice-Chancellor established a committee to review the faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies. One of the recommendations of the working party which was chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ronayne, was that a new School of Information Systems be established by altering the status of the present Department of Information Systems. (Focus 13 May 1988: 10) At the Council meeting on 11 July 1988 major administrative changes were instituted including that the name of the faculty be changed from the Faculty of Commerce to the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and that certain departments within the existing schools within the faculty become schools in their own right. As a consequence, the Department of Information Systems within the School of Accountancy became the School of Information Systems effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90).     On 16 February 1990 the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) Board of Management noted the initiative to establish the Centre for Research into the Implementation of Corporate Change within the AGSM. On 1 August 1990 the Minister for Higher Education and Employment Services, Mr Peter Baldwin, announced that the Centre would receive funding as a special research centre from the Australian Research Council (ARC), effective from the beginning of 1991. At the AGSM Board Meeting on 17 August 1990 it was noted that the Centre would be known as the Centre for Corporate Change (file 890794). The main focus of the Centre was how large-scale organisational change can be managed and implemented effectively in Australia. Professor Dexter Dunphy was the first Executive Director of the Centre (file 901658-01). On 31 October 1996 Professor Dunphy wrote to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) advising that from the beginning of 1997 until the end of 1999, the Centre for Corporate Change will be known as the Special Research Centre for Corporate Change. This change is in accordance with Australian Research Council requirements and is necessary for the Centre to receive continued ARC funding for the 1997-99 (final) triennium. At the same time, the title of the head of the Centre was changed from Executive Director to Director (file 901658-01). After the conclusion of this funding at the end of 1999, however, the Centre appears to have reverted back to being known the Centre for Corporate Change (file 970064-02). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The Centre thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 19 June 2007 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the closure of the Centre for Corporate Change effective from 30 June 2007 (file 970064-02).
