    Description
    This series contains audio-visual recordings of the Educational Research Unit (ERU) / Tertiary Education Research Centre (TERC). Each item is a film reel, video cassette or digital recording of productions created by the ERU/TERC - most of which focus on some aspect of education or learning. Many of the films feature UNSW and its students and staff, as either a background feature or fundamental part of the script. Series 2233 contains a number of production files on the filming of this A/V material.

    On 6 May 1997 the Academic Board recommended the establishment of a Gifted Education Research & Information Centre within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution AB97/36). On 4 June 1997 this was approved by the Acting Vice-Chancellor (file 962425). By the time of its launch on 19 September, 1997, however, it had become known as the Gifted Education Research, Resource & Information Centre (GERRIC). The initial aims of the Centre were: a) to undertake research in the education and development of gifted and talented students b) to act as a clearing-house for information on Australian and international research and practice in gifted education and c) to establish and conduct a range of inservice and professional development programs in gifted education for Australian teachers and school administrators, school vacation programs for academically gifted students and short-term information and support courses for parents of gifted children. The founding director of the Centre was Associate Professor Miraca Gross. On 19 February 2013 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) approved the closure of the Centre (file 2013/02916).     The Sub-Committee to consider University Research Policy was created at the 18th December 1986 meeting of the Research & Higher Awards Committee of the Professorial Board (resolution 86/73). The first meeting of the Sub-Committee was on 20th February, 1987 with Professor D. C. Sandman as Chairman. At this meeting, the following terms of reference were also formulated: 1.To investigate and report on the nature and extent of the current research effort by the University. 2.To investigate and report on the experience with and perceptions of, the research role of the University. 3.To identify research policy issues, explore options and assess possible impacts. The Sub-Committee met again on 11th March, 1987. At this meeting it was determined that it would not be feasible to undertake the wide-ranging task proposed in the draft terms of reference, and that the University's submission to ASTEC could be a suitable basis for the development of policy on research. Consequently, on 7th April, 1987 the Professorial Board decided that the Sub-Committee appointed to consider University research policy be disbanded, and that it be reconstituted, or another body established, to consider the final ASTEC Report on Higher Education Research Funding when the Report becomes available (resolution 87/36/4/a).     On 8 September 1986 the Deputy Registrar (Student Services), Stanley Croker, wrote to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Jarlath Ronayne outlining a proposal for the establishment of an Aboriginal Student Support Program effective from 1 January 1987. This proposal was approved on 12 September 1986. The Program was to be run by an Academic Coordinator, who reported to the Deputy Registrar (Student Services). Dr W. G. Adams was appointed to this post. The main aims of the Program were: 1. to increase the level of participation of Aboriginal people in courses at the university 2. to provide appropriate support to Aboriginal students to enhance their prospects of academic success (file 861235) In late 1988 the Program appears to have become known as the Aboriginal Education Program (file 861235, V496). On 30 November 1989 the Deputy Registrar (Student Services), Stanley Croker, outlined a proposal to establish an Aboriginal and Equity Programs Unit to manage a number of initiatives, including the Aboriginal Education Program, effective from 1 January 1990. This was approved by the Registrar Ian Way on 15 March 1990 (file 900792). The Aboriginal and Equity Programs Unit appears to have been disestablished effective from the end of 1992 and the Program resumed its reporting directly to the Student Services Department (97A35/3). In 1994, a review of Aboriginal education at UNSW was conducted. On 12 December 1994, as a result of this review, the Vice-Chancellor indicated that the Aboriginal Education Program would be moved to the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) effective from 1 January 1995 (file 940554). From 31 January 2000, the Aboriginal Education Program was moved to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education)'s portfolio, as a result of a restructure following the departure of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Development) (file 990894). From 16 April 2003 the name of this position was changed to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education & Quality Improvement) (file 2003/0773). On 5 August 2003 the Academic Board endorsed the establishment of the Program Centre for Indigenous Support and Aboriginal Studies, which would combine the operations of the Aboriginal Education Program and the Aboriginal Research and Resource Centre (resolution AB03/33). On 30 September 2003 the Vice-Chancellor approved this recommendation, with the Centre beginning operations from 1 January 2004 and so the Aboriginal Education Program as a separate entity effectively ceased to exist from this date (file 2003/1745).     Newsletter of the Centre for Medical Education, Research and Development (CMERD) (1973 - 1983) / School of Medical Education (1983 - 2000) and World Health Organisation Regional Teaching Training Centre for Health Personnel (RTTC) (1973 - 1988) / World Health Organisation Regional Training Centre for Health Development (RTC) (1988 - 1999) This series contains the joint newsletter of the Centre for Medical Education, Research and Development (CMERD) / School of Medical Education and the World Health Organisation Regional Teaching Training Centre for Health Personnel (RTTC) / World Health Organisation Regional Training Centre for Health Development (RTC).\r\nEach item is a typed booklet outlining current happenings and changes within the centres and school and appeared initially monthly, then bi-monthly and later a couple of times a year for distribution primarily to the Associates and friends of the Centre. The Archives does not hold any items from this series prior to October 1978, for August 1979, October 1986 - June 1988, September 1988, November 1988 - May 1989, October 1989 - July 1990, 1998 or anything post April 1999. It is unclear if these newsletters were ever produced or they are simply missing from the Archives' collection.

    The Board of Vocational Studies was formed at the 12th September, 1960 meeting of Council (resolution 60/132). Under Council resolution 60/132iii it was determined that the Board should supervise teaching, provide assistance to examiners and conduct research in those subjects that were nominated as coming under its auspices. Professor R. H. Myers was appointed the first Chairman of the Board and its inaugural meeting took place on 22nd September, 1960. Under Council resolution 64/223 at their meeting on 9th November, 1964, the functions of a Higher Degree Committee were also given to the Board. At the meeting of Council on 11th May, 1970 (resolution 70/74i) resolution 60/132 was rescinded and the Board re-constituted. Under Council resolution 70/74ii the Board was given the power to act as a faculty in regard to the course in Wool Technology (Education option) and all courses provided by the Schools of Education, Social Work, Librarianship, Health Administration and the Department of Industrial Arts. As well, it was determined that Chapter IV of the University By-Laws would now apply to the Board (resolution 70/74iii). This resulted in the establishment of an Executive Committee. On 12th November, 1973 Council changed the name of the Board to the Board of Professional Studies (resolution 73/231). A year later, on 11th November, 1974, Council approved the reconstitution of the Board into the Faculty of Professional Studies from 20th January 1975 (resolution 74/227). Pro-Vice-Chancellor Professor A. H. Willis was appointed Acting Dean of the Faculty. At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Professional Studies was disestablished effective 1st January, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/3).     The installation of a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) system within the university was initiated by Dr L. N. Short, Director of the Educational Research Unit, in March 1962 (file 370901). It was then installed in September 1962 using a grant of $50 000 from the Australian Universities Commission (00A136). The Educational Research Unit's Director Dr L. N. Short noted in a 1964 report that as originally planned the closed circuit television system was to have been confined to Science Hall for use with large lecture groups..In order to allow more extensive use of the equipment in research and teaching the circuit was extended to several rooms in the adjacent building (Building F) (V219/37). On 24 August 1962 Dr T. Farrimond was appointed as Senior Lecturer, Audio-Visual and thus the CCTV Unit was born (file 00017474). On 1 January 1968 the CCTV Unit was transferred to the Division of Postgraduate Extension Studies (00A136). On 3 March 1982 the CCTV Unit was detached from the Division and re-named the Audio-Visual Services Unit. The Unit reported directly to Pro-Vice-Chancellor H. R. Vallentine (Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee, 3 March 1982). Shortly afterwards the Services appears to have been dropped from the title and it became known as the Audio Visual Unit. From 21 June 1985 the Audio Visual Unit reported to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Malcolm Chaikin (Focus 21 June 1985). From 1 September 1988 the Audio Visual Unit reported to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Alan Gilbert (Focus 27 May 1988). From 1 September 1990 the Audio Visual Unit reported to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Tony Wicken (Focus 10 August 1990). From 16 September 1991 the title of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor's position became known as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) (Focus 23 August 1991). The title of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor's position was changed to Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Council meeting on 4 November 1991. After Professor John Niland took over as Vice-Chancellor on 6 July 1992, the Audio Visual Unit reported to the Bursar & Deputy Principal (Focus 8 May 1992). The Unit was moved to the newly formed Division of Information Services when it was formed effective from 1 June 1994. On 18 March 1998 the Unit was renamed the Media & Educational Technology Support Unit (METS) (UNSW 2000 Implementation Minute #73). From 1 February 2000 the Unit was moved to the portfolio of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Education) (file 990894). In May 2000 METS was absorbed into the Education Development and Technology Centre and thereby ceased to exist as an independent unit (file 002043).
