    On 11th February 1985, Senator Susan Ryan, Minister of Education, announced that the University of New South Wales had been selected the sole national centre for teaching and research in petroleum engineering. Following this announcement the Centre for Petroleum Engineering was established for the purpose of developing and presenting new programs in petroleum engineering. An advisory committee of the centre, comprising board members of BHP Petroleum, Bridge Oil, Esso Australia, Santos, West Australian Petroleum, the University of Sydney, and Bureau of Mineral Resources, Geology and Geophysics, held its inaugural meeting on 25th February 1985. Some of the functions of the committee were: (1) to advise the centre on course content and structure; (2) to advise on staffing and facilities for the centre; (3) to advise on possible modes of entry for undergraduate students, to ensure national representation and quality; (4) to advise on possible means of raising money to fund the centre's activities; (5) to advise on matters related to the smooth functioning of the centre. It was agreed that the committee meet annually except when circumstances require additional meetings to be convened.

    This series consists of corporate and strategic plans for the University of New South Wales, its faculties, divisions and units, as well as research management plans, operational plans and marketing plans. Each item in the series consists of a typed booklet outlining the future plans for a specific area within the university, as well as the university as a whole. Areas covered into the the faculties of Applied Science, Architecture/Built Environment, Arts & Social Sciences, Biological & Behavioural Sciences, College of Fine Arts, Commerce & Economics, Engineering, Law, Medicine, Professional Studies and Science; University College ADFA, the Australian Graduate School of Management, the Chancellery, the Division of Planning & Information, the Educational Testing Centre, the Institute of Languages, the School of Mines, Unisearch, the University Library and the University Union.

    The Bioengineering Centre was established at the 18 January 1989 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. It was a unit created within the Department of Biotechnology in the Faculty of Applied Science and its aim was to develop and coordinate research and continuing education activities in the multidisciplinary areas of bioengineering and recombinant-DNA technology (V752). Professor Peter Gray was appointed as the Centre's first Director. At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the Department of Biotechnology, including the Bioengineering Centre, was transferred to the Faculty of Life Sciences. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001, including the Bioengineering Centre (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Applied Bioscience, including the Department of Biotechnology, in order to form a School of Biotechnology & Biomolecular Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84). As a result the Bioengineering Centre was transferred to this newly established school. On the 3 October 2006 the Academic Board noted the disestablishment of the Bioengineering Centre effective from 31 December 2006 (AB06/125). Controlling Organisation: UNSW - 18/01/1989-31/12/2006

    Description
    The creation of the Women's Studies Centre within the Faculty of Arts was approved by the Acting Vice-Chancellor on 4 November 1987. The main aim of the Centre was to promote the research and teaching of Women's Studies jointly between the University of New South Wales and the Sydney College of Advanced Education. The first director of the Centre was Frances Lovejoy. The disestablishment of the Centre, among a number of other inactive centres, was recommended at the 9 October 1991 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee.     Description
    The Medical Foundation of the University of New South Wales was established as a company limited by guarantee as the official fundraising body for the medical School and its group of teaching hospitals. Its purposes were to promote and aid medical education, research, study and dissemination of information. At its meeting of 22 October 1973 the Board of the Foundation resolved that the Foundation would cease to operate and that the functions of the Foundation would be transferred to the university. At the 12 November 1973 Council meeting, this was approved and a new and separate successor body, also entitled "Medical Foundation of the University of New South Wales" was created as a Committee of Council (resolution 73/200). Although it had not been operational since 1973, the Foundation company was only formally dissolved and struck off the company register on 18 August 1978 (file 00025255).

    In 1967 the School of Accountancy in the Faculty of Commerce introduced an elective subject within its Bachelor of Commerce Accountancy program called Data Processing and Information Systems (UNSW Calendar 1967 Vol 1: D92) and the following year a graduate level subject, Information Systems, was offered. (UNSW Calendar 1968 Vol 1: D101) In 1973 Information Systems became a compulsory subject, and in 1975 final year students were able to specialise in Information Systems in conjunction with their Accountancy major. (Howitt, G. History of Accounting Education and Research at the University of New South Wales 1990: 9 SRF - Accountancy, School of) A chair in Information Systems was created within the Faculty of Commerce in 1974 which was filled by Professor Cyril Brookes (Howitt: 9) and in 1977 the Department of Information Systems was established within the School of Accountancy. (V633/25 Report of the Committee to Review the Faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies, October 1987: 28) In July 1985 the Vice-Chancellor established a committee to review the faculties of Commerce and Professional Studies. One of the recommendations of the working party which was chaired by the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ronayne, was that a new School of Information Systems be established by altering the status of the present Department of Information Systems. (Focus 13 May 1988: 10) At the Council meeting on 11 July 1988 major administrative changes were instituted including that the name of the faculty be changed from the Faculty of Commerce to the Faculty of Commerce and Economics and that certain departments within the existing schools within the faculty become schools in their own right. As a consequence, the Department of Information Systems within the School of Accountancy became the School of Information Systems effective from 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90).     Description
    This series contains the Proceedings of the Asia Leaders' Forums of the Asia-Australia Institute. Each item in the series is a paper-bound booklet, containing the proceedings and report of the Asia Leader's Forum. The Forum was held annually and (as outlined in the introduction to the 1995 proceedings) is an intellectual or 'think-tank' Forum for a small number of political, business and other leaders from the Asian region. The objective is to give high level regional leaders a context for private intellectual engagement, in which to generate and test new ideas on issues of fundamental importance to the region's future. In a 2002 report the forum was described as an annual small-scale private high level meeting of regional leaders from government, business, the media, education, research institutes and NGOs, which discuss major issues that will shape the future of the Asian region, including the development of regionalism and regional institutions. The Institute's Advisory Council also met in conjuction with the forums (Report to the Reference Group on the Future of the AAI, 5 June 2002, file 2002/3420).
