    In November 1977 around 150 university staff were invited to a meeting by the Vice-Chancellor to consider steps which might be taken to enhance the university's contribution to the study of Australia's energy problems. As a result of that meeting, a working party was formed to advise the Vice-Chancellor on the steps that the university might take. On 9 March 1978 the working party provided its final report, which suggested that a new centre be formed to be named the Energy Research, Development and Information Centre (ERDIC). On 10 May 1978 the Vice-Chancellor approved the establishment of the centre, which was to have the following functions: 1. to identify and report to the Vice-Chancellor on new directions for energy research, including technological, economic, environmental, social, conservational and educational aspects (especially continuing education), with a view to meeting the needs of the Australian community; 2. to facilitate and to generate funding opportunities for energy research within the university, both in existing schools and in new multi-disciplinary areas; 3. to be a vehicle for the receipt by the university of inquiries on energy research and development and for the formulation and submission of multi-disciplinary proposals by the university; 4. to catalyse the flow of information on energy, both within and from the university; 5. to advise on how the university library might become a resource centre for information on energy in Australia; 6. to consider and report on possible methods of funding the Centre in the future; and 7. to prepare and submit to the Vice-Chancellor within three months of the close of each calendar year an annual report of university activities in the field of energy. Associate Professor G. D. Sergeant took up the position as the first Director of the Centre. The Centre also had a Management Committee, which held its first meeting on 20 July 1978 (file 00032678). During 1985 the Centre was restructured and an Advisory Committee was created (file 033835, V243). As the result of a review of the Centre during 1996, from January 1997 ERDIC became a part of the Faculty of Engineering (file 921049). On 10 March 2005 the Centre's Management Committee recommended its closure effective from 31 December 2005.     The Council agreed to the formation of the Academic Board at its 2nd February, 1987 meeting (resolution 87/13a). The Board's establishment became more official on 14th September, 1987, with Council approving changes to Chapter III of the by-laws that put the Academic Board in place of the Professorial Board as the senior academic body of the University (resolution 87/99c). The Academic Board formally began its operations from 1st July, 1988. Under the by-laws (III, 1), its members were: a) the Chancellor b) the Deputy Chancellor c) the Vice-Chancellor d) the Academic Registrar e) the persons appointed by the Council to be the deans of the faculties, the Rector, University College, Australian Defence Force Academy and the Director, Australian Graduate School of Management f) the persons elected to the chairs of the faculties, of the Academic Board of the University College, Australian Defence Force Academy, and of boards of studies having the status or responsibilities of faculties g) a Pro-Vice-Chancellor appointed by the Vice-Chancellor h) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time professors of the University i) twelve persons elected by and from the full-time non-professorial members of the academic staff j) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a degree of bachelor, elected by and from the undergraduate students k) two persons, enrolled as candidates for a higher degree or graduate diploma, elected by and from the postgraduate students l) such other persons as the Council may appoint after considering the advice of the Academic Board. The Board continued on similar lines to the Professorial Board, with the Academic Board having the responsibility of furthering and co-ordinating the work of the faculties and board of studies and of encouraging scholarship and research, and with advising the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters of policy relating to the academic activities and the academic structure and development of the University (III, 2, a). The by-laws also dictated the election of a President and Deputy President from the members of the Board (III, 10, 1). The Academic Board held its first meeting on 5th July, 1988. At this meeting Professor D. J. Anderson was elected the first President and Dr J. Y. Morrison first Deputy President of the Board. Four Standing Committees were established - the Policy Advisory Committee, the Postgraduate Studies Committee, the Undergraduate Studies Committee and an Academic Planning & Services Committee (resolution 88/21). An Agenda Committee was also formed (resolution 88/20). In 1996 changes were made to the By-laws that affected the Academic Board. The number of members rose, with the two Deputy Vice-Chancellors and the Dean of the Australian Graduate School of Management added to the Board (4, 48). Under the new by-laws (49, 1) the Board's functions are: a) to be the principal academic body of the University; and b) to further and co-ordinate the work of the faculties, boards of studies and other academic units, and to encourage teaching, scholarship and research; and c) to advise the Vice-Chancellor and Council on matters relating to teaching, scholarship and research within the University; and d) to consider and report on matters referred to it by the Council or by the Vice-Chancellor; and e) to have such functions of the Council as the Council may, from time to time, delegate to it. As well, along with the President, there were now two Deputy Presidents elected (50, 1). In 2013, the President of the Academic Board was Professor Prem Ramburuth, with Associate Professor David Cohen and Associate Professor Stephen Fortescue as Deputy Presidents. The Board also had seven Committees - Academic Board Advisory Committee, Committee on Research, Higher Degree Research Committee, Committee on Education, Postgraduate Coursework Committee, Undergraduate Studies Committee and the Pre-University and Alternative Education Committee.     On 14 September 1987 Council approved in principle that the University of New South Wales make available some of its educational programs to full-fee paying overseas students (resolution 87/99bi). Resulting from this decision, an International Programs Office was created within the Continuing Education Support Unit. Meg Debus-Rogers commenced as Manager of the Office in October 1987. The Office was responsible for both short courses and full-fee award courses (V174, 1987, p3). On 26 February 1988 Dr J. Hedberg, Co-ordinator of Continuing Education, was appointed acting Director of the International Programs Office for as long as the Office was part of the Continuing Education Support Unit (file 880361). On 1 September 1988 total responsibility for full-fee overseas students enrolling in courses for an award of the university was transferred to the Academic Registrar's Department, headed by Max Schroder, while the Continuing Education Support Unit continued to deal with all overseas students studying 'short' non-award courses or subjects within award courses, where students are not proceeding to the award of a UNSW degree (such as Study Abroad programmes) (file 880712). On 1 January 1990 the position of Academic Registrar was disestablished. As a result, Max Schroder became Director, International Programs, who reported to the Deputy Principal & Registrar and was in charge of the newly created Marketing & Student Group. It was noted that the Group will comprise the International Student Centre, the Marketing Office and the Admissions Office and it will be responsible for marketing, recruitment, admission of all students and provision of supporting services in relation to overseas students (Uniken, 9 March 1990, p 7). From 12 August 1990 the International Programs Office was formerly re-created and began reporting to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor Alan Gilbert (file 901313, 0096A85/4). From 16 September 1991 the title of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor's position became known as the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research & Development) (Focus 23 August 1991). The title of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor's position was changed to Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the Council meeting on 4 November 1991. After Professor John Niland took over as Vice-Chancellor on 6 July 1992, the International Programs Office reported to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & International) (Focus 8 May 1992). At the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee 16 February 1994 meeting, a paper outlining the restructuring of administrative services was tabled. This included the re-naming of the International Programs Office to the International Office. From the beginning of 1999 the International Office became part of an expanded international section called UNSW International, still reporting to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & International) (file 971332-01). When this position was re-named Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) on 16 April 2003, UNSW International was moved to the portfolio of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Education) (file 2003/0773). From 7 January 2004 the name of this position was altered to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International) and from 11 October 2004 to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International & Development) (SRF - Organisation & Management). On 29 September 2006 UNSW International was upgraded to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (International) and the International Office continued reporting to this position (SRF - Organisation & Management).     The University Teaching & Student Counselling Committee was created by the Professorial Board on 10th October, 1961 (resolution 61/255b). The Committee's terms of reference were: i) to consider and report to the Professorial Board on all matters referred to it by the Board. ii) to consider and report to the Board on all matters, relating to research into University teaching and student counselling, that may be put to it by Heads of Schools or by the Director of the Educational Research Unit or by the Head of the Student Research and Counselling Service. iii) to determine, on behalf of the Professorial Board, priorities in the research programmes of the Educational Research Unit and the Student Research and Counselling Service. iv) generally to promote inquiry into teaching and student counselling in the University, and to encourage and facilitate the dissemination of the results of such inquiry. The inaugural meeting of the Committee was on 6th December, 1961 with Professor R. H. Myers as Chairman. The Committee was disbanded by the Professorial Board on 8th April, 1969 (resolution 69/46viii). The last meeting of the Committee was on 8th August, 1968.
