    The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     On 16 February 1990 the Australian Graduate School of Management (AGSM) Board of Management noted the initiative to establish the Centre for Research into the Implementation of Corporate Change within the AGSM. On 1 August 1990 the Minister for Higher Education and Employment Services, Mr Peter Baldwin, announced that the Centre would receive funding as a special research centre from the Australian Research Council (ARC), effective from the beginning of 1991. At the AGSM Board Meeting on 17 August 1990 it was noted that the Centre would be known as the Centre for Corporate Change (file 890794). The main focus of the Centre was how large-scale organisational change can be managed and implemented effectively in Australia. Professor Dexter Dunphy was the first Executive Director of the Centre (file 901658-01). On 31 October 1996 Professor Dunphy wrote to the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) advising that from the beginning of 1997 until the end of 1999, the Centre for Corporate Change will be known as the Special Research Centre for Corporate Change. This change is in accordance with Australian Research Council requirements and is necessary for the Centre to receive continued ARC funding for the 1997-99 (final) triennium. At the same time, the title of the head of the Centre was changed from Executive Director to Director (file 901658-01). After the conclusion of this funding at the end of 1999, however, the Centre appears to have reverted back to being known the Centre for Corporate Change (file 970064-02). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce of Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the Faculty of Business (resolution CL06/68), with the inaugural meeting of the faculty taking place on 23 November 2006. The Centre thus became a part of this new faculty. On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business as the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 19 June 2007 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the closure of the Centre for Corporate Change effective from 30 June 2007 (file 970064-02).     The Australian Association of University Staff (AAUS) was registered as a union under the Conciliation and Arbitration Act on 18 November 1986. Early in 1988 its name was changed to the Federated Australian University Staff Association (FAUSA). The new union was the work of the members of the Federal Council of University Staff Associations of Australia, also called FAUSA (here to be called the 'old FAUSA'), which was not a registered union, but which through registration of a union gained access to the Australian Conciliation and Arbitration Commission (from 1988 Australian Industrial Relations Commission) for its members. All member associations of the old FAUSA had held their inaugural AAUS branch meetings by mid-July 1986. During 1987 the Executive of the old FAUSA worked on amendments and additions to the constitution FAUSA to allow for the eventual merger of FAUSA and AAUS into one union. (FAUSA News, 2 February 1987, p.4) When early in 1988 the name of the Australian Association of University Staff was changed to the Federated Australian University Staff Association, the Executive of the 'old FAUSA' needed to explain the relationship more clearly to members: Those already (and understandably) confused by the complex relationships between our registered and unregistered organisations at campus, state and federal level, will not be helped by a decision taken some time ago, and agreed by the Industrial Registrar earlier this year, to change the name of our registered organisation from the Australian Association of University Staff (AAUS) to the Federated Australian University Staff Association - having the same acronym 'FAUSA' as unincorporated 'old' FAUSA - the Federation of Australian Staff Associations. Council voted in favour of retaining the acronym which is now well known in the education area at least, but recognised the transitional problem arising from two organisations with the same 'FAUSA' acronym. To assist during this period, the Executive has adopted the device of referring to 'FAUSA (unincorporated)' (the old FAUSA) and 'FAUSA (registered)' (the registered union formerly called AAUS). Soon, it is hoped that all operations can be transferred to FAUSA (registered) and that FAUSA (unincorporated) can cease active operations. From that point all federal activities will take place in the name of FAUSA (registered) and all relations with members will be via the official Branches of FAUSA (registered) currently established on each campus and operating alongside the existing academic staff association affiliated with FAUSA (unincorporated). Before this can happen, however, it is important that all current members sign membership forms to join FAUSA (registered)... At this 1987 AGM of FAUSA (unincorporated) the Council exercised its option not to elect a separate national Executive, but to adopt the Executive duly elected through the postal-balloting process of FAUSA (registered). Thus the two Executives have been identical: throughout the year the Executive has met mainly as the Executive of FAUSA (registered), and has taken steps, in its alternative capacity as the Executive of FAUSA (unregistered), to endorse all decisions made by the registered Executive. (Executive Report to 1988 AGM, fausa news, 88/7, 23 September 1988, p.7) Most FAUSA members were members of not only one but two or more staff associations or unions (see for example the UNSW Staff Association). The academic unions worked together on a number of campaigns and FAUSA union over the years held discussions and negotiations with other tertiary academic unions with a view to amalgamate to create a larger, more powerful union speaking with one voice. By joining forces the union would become an organisation which would speak on behalf of all categories of staff in higher education; pooled resources would mean more efficient and comprehensive service; and a duplication of activities could be avoided. Finally, in 1993, following a successful ballot of academic staff association unions FAUSA, which represented mainly academic staff in the traditional university sector, amalgamated with four other academic unions to form The National Tertiary Education Industry Union (NTEU). FAUSA amalgamated with the Union of Australian College Academics (UACA) - which represented mainly academic staff in the Colleges of Advanced Education, the Australian Colleges and Universities Staff Association (ACUSA) - which represented general staff in higher education, TAFE, Adult Education and student unions, mainly in Victoria, the University of Adelaide General Staff Association (UAGSA) - which represented general staff at the University of Adelaide, and the Australian National University Administrative and Allied Officers' Association (ANUAAOA) - which represented middle-level and senior administrative staff at the ANU. FAUSA was the legal 'vehicle' for the amalgamation and continued to be in existence with a name change to National Tertiary Education Industry Union, whereas the other unions merged as legal entities and their assets became NTEU assets.     The formation of the Professorial Board was provided for in Chapter III of the by-laws passed by Council on 12th September, 1949 (resolution 5). These stated that the Professors and Associate Professors in the several Faculties and such other persons as Council may appoint shall form a Board, to be called the Professorial Board (III, 1). The Board was to be specially charged with the duty of furthering and co-ordinating the work of Faculties and Departments and of encouraging scholarship and research and of considering the studies and discipline of the University (III, 4, i). Specifically the Board could consider reports made to it by any faculty, appoint internal and external examiners, prescribe books and details of subjects for lectures, determine the conditions of competition for any post-graduate award, decide all questions of admission ad eundem gradum and advanced standing and submit recommendations to Council regarding teaching staff and academic standing (III, 4, ii). As well, any member of the Professorial Board was given the power to suspend any student, as long as the misconduct occurred in the Department or presence of the member (III, 5, a). The by-laws also dictated that the first Chairman of the Professorial Board would be elected in May, 1950 (III, 2). Meetings would be held at the discretion of the Chairman or at the written request of the President, Director or three members of the Board (III, 6, a). At the 13th March, 1950 meeting of Council it was determined that until July, 1950, the professors already appointed should act as a committee with authority to consider all matters which, in accordance with the provision of Chapter III of the By-laws (the Professorial Board), shall be within the jurisdiction of the Professorial Board when constituted (resolution 40ii). The first meeting of Professorial staff had in fact already taken place on 1st February, 1950, with Director A. Denning as Chairman, and meetings were held generally on a weekly basis until the end of June. Under the provision in the by-laws, on 31st May, 1950 Denning was formally elected as Chairman of the Professorial Board. The first committees of the Professorial Board were determined at the Professorial Committee's meeting on 6th June, 1950. These were Buildings & Sites, Equipment & Supplies, Research, Graduate School & Post-Graduate Studies, Publications & Library, Academic Studies & Standards and Staff & Students. The Professorial Board held its first official meeting on 4th July, 1950. At this meeting, the membership of the first seven committees named by the Professorial Committee on the 6th June was finalised. By the time of the last meeting of the Board on 7th June, 1988, approximately eighty committees had come and gone throughout the Board's existence. At the 14th September, 1987 meeting of Council changes to Chapter III of the by-laws were passed (resolution 87/99c). As a result, effective July 1988, the Professorial Board ceased to exist and the Academic Board was established in its place.     The Faculty of the College of Fine Arts (COFA) came into being on 1st January, 1990 as a result of the City Art Institute amalgamating with the University of New South Wales. The Heads of Agreement authorising this union was approved by Council on 7th August, 1989 and signed on 21st September, 1989. The first Dean and Director of COFA was Ken Reinhard and COFA initially had three Schools - Arts Education & Theory, Media Arts and Studio Arts. On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the Faculty of Art and Design, effective from 23 July 2014.     The formal origins of Unisearch Ltd are in an undated report from Vice-Chancellor Professor J. P. Baxter to Council on 11 March 1957. Council immediately set up an Ad Hoc Committee to consider the question of university assistance to industry and to examine the vice-chancellor's proposals in detail. On 14 July 1958 Council approved action to set up a limited liability company and to obtain the Minister's approval (resolution 58/88). The original name proposed for the company was Research Services Ltd, but as there was another company already registered under that name, this was changed to Unisearch Ltd at the 9 March 1959 Council meeting. The prime aim of Unisearch was indicated as to undertake research and investigation and to develop and exploit patents (resolution 59/23). Unisearch Ltd was incorporated on 1 April 1959 and the inaugural meeting of its Board of Directors was held on 7 April 1959, with R. J. Webster as Chairman. In 1961 J. S. Fraser was appointed Secretary of Unisearch - and in 1963 this position was redesignated as Manager & Secretary. A restructure of Unisearch Ltd was approved by Council at its 1 June 1998 and 6 July 1998 meetings. Its educational activities were separated out to form a new body effective from 1 January 1999 in order for Unisearch to revert to and concentrate on its establishment objectives of consulting/technology, commercialisation/innovation and project management activities (resolutions CL98/40 & CL98/47). In a report given to the 9 November 1998 meeting of Council, the new entity was named NewSouth Global Pty Ltd and, together with Unisearch, it was intended that they would report together to the body NewSouth Enterprises Pty Ltd, which would be under the direct control of the university. But while accounts of the two entities were kept separately from 1 January 1999, NewSouth Global did not begin operations until 1 July 1999 (file 981199). Also, while NewSouth Enterprises Pty Ltd was incorporated on 24 February 1999, its original purpose of overseeing both Unisearch and NewSouth Global was never fulfilled. Instead it became a holding company for NewSouth Global alone, before ultimately being de-registered in 2002 (file 001475, UNSW Annual Reports 2001, p 74; 2002, p 82). Unisearch thus retained its original arrangement of reporting directly to the university. At the 22 June 2005 Council meeting Unisearch was re-named NewSouth Innovations Pty Ltd effective from 1 July 2005. At the same time it was converted to a proprietary company limited by shares - with the university as sole shareholder - and its consulting arm Expert Opinion Services (EOS) was transferred to NewSouth Global, thereby making the new NewSouth Innovations responsible only for technology commercialisation (resolutions 05/68 & 05/69). In 2007 the Chief Executive Officer of NewSouth Innovations was Mark Bennett.     At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee (and optionally a Higher Degree Committee) and a Faculty Education Committee (or optionally an Undergraduate Education Committee & Postgraduate Coursework Education Committee) (resolution CL99/81). Consequently, at the Faculty of Law's meeting on 10 February, 2000 it approved the creation of a Faculty Education Committee.     The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.
