    This series contains files on the research and patents of the School of Food Technology. The material is typed and maintained in manila folders. The files include copies of patents, details of research and notes regarding challenges or commercial usage of the patents. The patents are managed by Unisearch Limited, but this material primarily relates to correspondence from within the School. No authorised copies are held in this series.

    Description
    The Department of Biological Process Engineering was established within the School of Chemical Engineering in the Faculty of Applied Science at the 28 February 1968 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The first head of the department was Associate Professor G. H. Roper. On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Engineering with the School of Chemical Technology (resolution 79/157). As a result, the department became a part of the School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective from 1 January 1980. On 9 September 1985, following a review of the science/engineering disciplines, Council dissolved the department as an independent unit and moved its members of staff to the newly redesignated Department of Biotechnology effective from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).     The Department of Applied Chemistry dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. On 10 November, 1949 Professor A. E. Alexander took up the position of the first head of department. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Applied Chemistry became one of the inaugural departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Applied Chemistry came into existence (resolution 153). The School of Applied Chemistry appears to have had its name changed to the School of Chemistry sometime in late 1957. Although the school had sometimes been referred to as the School of Chemistry before this date, on 11 November 1957 Council authorised a split of the Applied Chemistry & Chemical Engineering Advisory Panel, with the new panels becoming the Chemistry Advisory Panel and the Chemical Engineering & Food Technology Advisory Panel (resolution 57/163a). This split seems to have coincided with the final definitive change to the school's name. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Chemistry was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Chemistry (resolution CL001/49). At its meeting on 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Chemistry. Together with the Department of Food Science & Technology, the school's staff were moved to the newly formed School of Chemical Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     The Department of Chemical Engineering dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. The first head was Professor J. P. Baxter, who commenced in his position on 16 January 1950. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Chemical Engineering became one of the first three departments within the Faculty of Science. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Chemical Engineering came into existence (resolution 153). On 14 May 1956 Council created the Faculty of Technology (resolution 761i) and the School of Chemical Engineering was moved into this faculty. On 9 May 1960, Council changed the name of the faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 12 November 1979 Council resolved to merge the School of Chemical Technology with the School of Chemical Engineering to form the School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry effective from 1 January 1980 (resolution 79/157). As a result, the School of Chemical Engineering ceased to exist from this date.     At its meeting on 8 October 2001 Council approved the creation of a School of Chemical Sciences to be effective from 1 January 2002, which was to be made up of the staff of the former School of Chemistry and the Department of Food Science & Technology (resolution CL001/84). The first head of school was Professor Robert Lamb. Effective 1 January 2004, all staff and students from the food science discipline were moved from the School of Chemical Sciences to the School of Chemical Engineering & Industrial Chemistry in the Faculty of Engineering. As a result, on 23 February 2004 Council changed the name of the School of Chemical Sciences to the School of Chemistry (resolution CL04/011ii).     Description
    The Food Industry Development Centre was established as the result of funding by the Australian Government as part of its Key Centres of Teaching & Research Program. This was formally announced by the government on 31 May 1988 and the creation of the Centre within the Department of Food Science & Technology in the School of Applied Bioscience, Faculty of Applied Science, was formally approved at the 14 September 1988 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The initial director of the Centre was Professor R. B. H. Wills (file 880435). Following a government review in May 1994, it was determined that funding for the Centre would cease at the end of 1995.     The Faculty of Life Sciences was established by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 7th July, 1997 with Associate Professor S. Andrews as the Presiding Member. Under Dean M. Sleigh, the Faculty then contained five schools and five Centres. The Faculty minutes also include those of the Faculty's Executive Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997) and the Higher Degree Committee (first meeting 11th August, 1997). At Council's 13th December, 1999 meeting, changes to Faculty committees were approved. The Faculty committee structure was therefore altered to embody a Faculty Board, a Faculty Standing Committee, a Faculty Research Committee and a Faculty Education Committee (resolution CL99/81). The Faculty of Life Sciences was disbanded by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 28th May, 2001.     This series contains the Ingenuity Magazine of the Faculty of Engineering. Each item is a magazine outlining current happenings, research and changes within the Faculty of Engineering, which was generally released twice a year. The first issue noted that Ingenuity "UNSW...are internationally renowned for our innovations in: energy, water, biomedical implants (such as the bionic eye), cybersecurity, transport, sustainable mining, food science, chemical engineering and nanotechnology – the list goes on...Ingenuity profiles some of that work".
