    Description
    The first chair in geography was created at the 8 March 1965 meeting of Council (resolution 65/25) within the Faculty of Applied Science. At the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee (Personnel) meeting on 12 May 1965, it was determined that the chair would head the School of Geography. On 8 November 1965 J. A. Mabbutt was appointed to this position (resolution 65/164) and so the School of Geography came into being with Professor Mabbutt as its first head. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). On 3 February 1997 Council determined that the School of Geography would be located in the Faculty of Science & Technology from this date (resolution CL97/5). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Geography (resolution CL001/49). On 8 October 2001 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Geography in order to form a School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences effective from 1 January 2002 (resolution CL001/84).     Description
    This series consists of the Geography at UNSW Magazine / Newsletter. Initially produced by the Geographical Society as a magazine, it later appears to have been taken up by the School of Geography in the form of a newsletter. The material is typed and maintained in manilla folders in chronological order. The magazine / newsletter includes mainly news within the school, although in its incarnation as a magazine it also contains a number of creative items.     Description
    This series comprises the School of Geography's annual reports to the Committee and minutes of the meetings of the Visiting Committee for the School of Geography as presented to Council. Occasionally there are minutes only for the reporting year or a report for a year may be missing. Annual reports by the head of school for these years can be found in S846.

The reports were presented to the Visiting Committee prior to its annual meeting and also sometimes have the notice for the meeting of the Visiting Committee attached.     Description
    The Visiting Committee for the School of Geography was established at the 9 September 1985 Council meeting (resolution 85/103). Visiting Committees were constituted under Resolution 68/137 of Council as a means of establishing a close liaison between industry and appropriate schools of the university. A report by A.H. Willis to the Professorial Board in May 1968 had found that the advisory panel system, dating from March 1950, no longer held any benefits. The report also recommended the abolition of advisory panels by the end of 1968 and the panels to be replaced by Visiting Committees. Resolution 68/126 of the Professorial Board requested A.H. Willis to present more specific proposals on the membership and terms of reference of the proposed Visiting Committees. His following recommendations to the Professorial Board from 11 June 1968 were put to Council though the recommendations of the Academic Committee in their document from 17 June 1968. Council at its meeting on 8 July 1968 resolved 68/137 - that Council adopts the terms of reference and membership of Visiting Committees as set out in the document presented dated 17th June 1968. The document recommended to Council that the Visiting Committees be established by Council on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor who consulted with deans and heads of school regarding the establishment of the committee and the chairmanship. The chairman, appointed by Council, was chosen from members external to the university. The terms of reference for Visiting Committees were 1. to appraise the educational programmes of the School in relation to the needs of industry and professional practice 2. to receive and discuss the Annual Report of the Head of the School 3. to report to the Council on the special problems facing the School 4. to aid the development of the School in any way possible The Committee met annually and held its first meeting on 27 February 1986 with Mr A.     The School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences was formed by Council on 8 October 2001 within the Faculty of Science effective from 1 January 2002 as a result of the disestablishment of the former schools of Biological Science, Geology and Geography (resolution CL001/84). The first head of school was Professor Peter Greenaway. In 2006 the head of the School of Biological, Earth & Environmental Sciences was Associate Professor Paul Adam.     The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     The inaugural meeting of the Advisory Committee of the Centre for Remote Sensing was held on 28th October 1981. Prof. J.A. Mabbutt from the School of Geography was appointed chairman of the committee and Dr. J.A. Richards from the School of Electrical Engineering director. The committee's terms of reference were as follows: (1) to advise the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the development and operation of the centre; (2) to advise the director and management committee on policy and general procedures in the development and function of the centre; (3) to advise the director and management committee on the development of teaching programs in remote sensing, on faculty and school affiliations of students enrolling in formal programs under the control of the centre, and on relations with existing faculty higher degree committees; (4) to advise and assist the director with the development of contacts between the centre and the university, and the centre and the remote sensing community at large; (5) to advise the director on the development of research and consulting activities that require access to the centre's facilities. It was agreed that the committee would meet approximately bimonthly.

    The Cross Faculty Standing Committee for Science was created at the Council meeting on 10th April, 2000 (resolution CL000/15d). The Committee was assigned the delegated authority for the following programs: Science (3970), Advanced Science (3973, 3985, 3986, 3990), Environmental Science (3988, 3976), Medical Science (3991), Science - Communication (3932), Science - Media & Communications (3933), Combined Science/Arts (3930) and Advanced Science/Arts (3931), Combined Science/Social Science (3935) and Combined Advanced Science/Social Science (3936), Combined Science/Education (4075), the Science components of other combined degrees, Aviation (3980), Computer Science (3978), Information Systems (3979), Business Information Technology (3971), Geography (3010), Applied Geology (3000), Optometry (3950, 3951) and Safety Science (3877). With the establishment of a single Faculty of Science by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective 1st July 2001 (resolution CL001/49), the need for a Cross Faculty Standing Committee for Science came to a close.
