    On 12 March 1956 following a grant of 55,000 pounds received from the Kellogg Foundation, the NSW University of Technology established the School of Hospital Administration to provide graduate level training for hospital administrators throughout Australia. (resolution 737; The University of New South Wales, c.1961: 95) Administratively the School was placed with the Faculty of Commerce. The foundation professor was Dr S B Hatfield (resolution 774), a medical graduate of the University of Sydney who had studies hospital administration at John Hopkins University. (Willis, A H. The University of New South Wales. The Baxter Years: 76) From 1957 the School offered courses leading to a Master of Hospital Administration and a Certificate of Hospital Administration, as well as an extramural in-service training course through the School's Department of External Studies on behalf of the statutory health authorities in New South Wales, Victoria, and Western Australia which was a prerequisite for the diploma issued by the Australian Institute of Hospital Administrators. (The University of New South Wales, c.1961: 95; Handbook for External Students, 1978: 4 V56/2) In August 1967 the Kellogg Foundation made a grant of $330,060 for the strengthening and expansion of the graduate programme in education for hospital and health care administration. At the same time the School was transferred from the Faculty of Commerce to the Board of Vocational Studies. (Willis: 163) In September 1968 Council approved the introduction of the Bachelor of Health Administration degree. (resolution 68/169) On 12 May 1969 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Health Administration. (resolution 69/93) In 1970 it introduced a graduate diploma for practising health administrators as well as a Master of Health Administration which either could be completed through coursework or by research. (Submission to the Faculty of Professional Studies Review Group by the Faculty of Professional Studies: 2, 8 SRF - Professional Studies, Faculty of) Administratively the School was placed with the Board of Professional Studies during 1974, and with the Faculty of Professional Studies from 1975. At a Council meeting on 5 June 1989 it was resolved that the School of Health Administration should be renamed the School of Health Services Management. (resolution CL 89/60) On 2 December 1996 as part of the UNSW 2000 planning exercise Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Professional Studies from 1 January 1997 and transfer the School of Health Services Management to the Faculty of Medicine. (resolution CL96/88/3; Uniken 6 December 1996: 4) On 11 December 2000 Council resolved (resolution CL000/88) to disestablish the schools of Health Services Management, Community Medicine, and Medical Education from 1 January 2001 and combine all the schools into a school with the interim name of School of Community Medicine, Health Services Management and Medical Education. The school name became the School of Public Health and Community Medicine and the health services management, medical education and community medicine programs were absorbed into the school.     In 1984 the central administration of the university was reorganised into two divisions: Administration and Planning and Information. This necessitated a reorganisation of functions that had once been undertaken by the divisions of the registrar and the bursar, which was finalised by 15 March 1985 (Focus 15 March 1985). Thus the former registrar's division became the Division of the Deputy Principal (Administration), which contained a Department of the Registrar. This department was responsible for the Student Administration Branch, the Student Services Branch and the Administrative Services Branch and was headed by Mr John Gannon, who held the title of Registrar (UNSW Annual Report 1985). In the wake of Mr Gannon's retirement on 1 August 1987 (BRF - John Gannon), the Registrar title was re-attached to the Deputy Principal (Administration) position and a Department of the Academic Registrar was created in place of the former Department of the Registrar, with Mr Max Schroder as Academic Registrar From 1 January 1990 the position of Academic Registrar was disestablished. Mr Schroder became Director, International Programs and the remaining functions of the department were retained as Departments reporting directly to the Deputy Principal & Registrar (Uniken, 9 March 1990, p 7).     The proposal to establish a university health service was first discussed at a meeting of the Board of Prince Henry Hospital on 20 June 1961. A proposal for such a scheme had been prepared for discussion by Dr T B McMurray at the request of the Chief Executive Officer of the hospital, H H Dickinson. In a letter to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Baxter, dated 23 June 1961 Dickinson wrote that Dr M Napthali could be made available to implement the scheme if the university so desired. (CN1160/324 File: 00024968) The Personnel Sub-Committee at its meeting on 12 December 1961 recommended under item X. (a) that the University accept the offer of the Board of Prince Henry Hospital to make available the services of Dr Napthali to establish and operate a student medical service (no salary cost involved in 1962); (b) that the following positions be established: (1) Nursing Sister (enquiries to be made from Prince Henry Hospital to see whether initially they can make one available); (2) Office Assistant/Typist; (c) that the above service be located for administrative purposes within the Division of the Registrar. At its meeting on 12 March 1962 Council approved the creation of the service (resolution 62/4 (i)). Dr Napthali commenced duty on 27 August 1962. (CN1160/324 File: 00024968) A press release was issued on 12 September 1962 announcing the establishment of the service which was free of charge to students (CN1160/324 File: 00024968). While the Student Health Service officially commenced receiving patients from the first week of October 1962, patients were seen during the preceding several weeks, its initial setup period. The role of the service was to provide first aid and to treat general medical and surgical complaints with specialist support from Prince Henry Hospital. It was emphasised that it was not to be a replacement for private or community health services. (V67 Student Health Service Annual Report 1963) On 13 May 1963 Council appointed Dr Napthali as the first Director of the Student Health Service. (resolution 63/60) He retired in 1980 and was succeeded by Dr Geoffrey Hansen. (V67 Student Health Service Annual Report 1980) The Student Health Service began to be referred to as the Student Health Unit from around 1968. (UNSW Calendar 1968: A115) In a letter to Dr Hansen dated 13 January 1989 the Registrar, Ian Way, stated that from 1 March 1989 the Student Health Unit would be replaced by the University Health Service and Dr Hansen would be designated as Director of the Service. Under a licence agreement with the university the service would operate as a private medical practice and the patients would be designated private patients. The doctors would not be obligated by the university to see patients on its behalf. Patients would be bulk billed under the Medicare scheme.     The Faculty of Commerce was formed in principle by Council at its meeting on 12 July 1954 (resolution 431i). The Faculty was then officially launched at the 11th March, 1957 meeting of Council (resolution 57/37). Professor David Culloden Rowan was the first Dean of the Faculty, with the initial schools being Accountancy, Economics and Hospital Administration. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty occurred on 5th June, 1957. In 1986 - 1987 a Committee organised by the Vice-Chancellor conducted a review of the Faculty. As a result, at the Council meeting on 11th July, 1988 the name of the Faculty was altered to the Faculty of Commerce & Economics effective 1 August 1988 (resolution 88/90). On 3 July 2006 Council approved the disestablishment of the Faculty of Commerce & Economics, subject to the approval of the Academic Board. The Faculty was to be amalgamated with the Australian Graduate School of Management to form the new Faculty of Business. The Board approved this on 1 August 2006 (resolution AB06/91) and at the Board's 7 November 2006 meeting, it noted that the Faculty of Commerce & Economics and the Australian Graduate School of Management should be considered to have ceased to have the functions and powers of faculties after [the first Faculty Board meeting of the Faculty of Business on Thursday 23 November 2006]' (resolution AB06/139).     The Faculty of Medicine was formally approved by Council on 11th July, 1960 (resolution 60/62i). Functions within the Faculty had, however, already been in operation, with the first Dean, Professor F. F. Rundle, being appointed from 1st May, 1960, and the inaugural Faculty meeting taking place on 23rd June, 1960. The initial schools within the Faculty were Anatomy, Medicine, Pathology, Physiology and Surgery. In 2013 the Faculty of Medicine, administered by Dean Professor Peter Smith, included four Schools, five Clinical Schools and eighteen Centres.     This series consists of the Visiting Committee Reports / Annual Reports of the School of Health Administration / Health Services Management. Each item in the series is a typed set of papers, which have been either stapled or paper bound together. There are three types of reports included in the series - the first is the original report of the school to the Visiting Committee, the second is this original report bound together with the minutes of the Visiting Committee's meeting, which was then submitted to Council and the third are the later annual reports, which form the same function. Also included are loose minutes for the Visiting Committee meetings. The Archives does not hold any copies of the reports of the school to the Visiting Committee for the years 1970, 1972, 1982, 1984 and 1986 - 1987 or Visiting Committee reports to Council for the years 1969 - 1972, 1975 and 1978. Separate copies of the Visiting Committee minutes are not held for the years 1976, 1980 - 1984 and 1986 - 1987. No reports are held for the years 1988 - 1989 or 1991 and onwards.

    At a marketing conference in Canberra in June 1962, P J A Fabricus, Marketing Director, Unilever Australia Pty Ltd, proposed that a chair in Marketing be established at an Australian university. This proposal was debated within the University of NSW and at a meeting of the Executive Committee of Council on 17 December 1962 it was decided that a Chair in Marketing should be established within the School of Business Administration so long as the necessary funds could be found from amongst the business community. In April 1963 a Committee was formed, chaired by Mr Warren McDonald, Chairman of the Commonwealth Banking Corporation, with the aim of raising 60,000 pounds. This was achieved during August 1963 (SRF - Marketing) and on 11 November 1963 Council approved the establishment of a Chair in Marketing in the School of Business Administration within the Faculty of Commerce (resolution 63/194). In March 1965 Professor J B Schneider, formerly Chair of Marketing at San Francisco State College, was appointed as the inaugural Chair (resolution 65/5). On 24 January 1966 Council approved the establishment of a Department of Marketing within the Faculty of Commerce (resolution 66/24). In 1966 the university introduced a more comprehensive program in marketing of three courses for those in business and government already engaged in all aspects of marketing, marketing research and related fields. The program consisted of one part time course and two short residential courses. (SRF - Marketing) In March 1967 Professor Schneider resigned after only two years service and returned to the US. (SRF - Marketing) Roger Layton, Senior Lecturer in Economics, had been appointed Professor of Marketing within the Faculty of Commerce (resolution 66/183) in November of the previous year. A marketing specialisation within the Bachelor of Commerce degree was taught for the first time in 1967 (UNSW Calendar 1967 B208-9; UNSW Calendar 1968 B 166-7). On 11 May 1970 as part of the administrative arrangements necessary for the establishment of the Institute of Social Research, the Department of Marketing was re-designated as the School of Marketing (resolution 70/75 (viii)). At a meeting of the Professorial Board on 1 April 1975 it was resolved that the Department of Behavioural Science, formerly situated with the Graduate School of Business, be placed within the School of Marketing (resolution of Professorial Board 75/40). However just over a year later on 14 July 1976 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee decided that the department should be removed from the School of Marketing and designated as a separate unit within the Faculty of Commerce (S261; UNSW Annual Report 1976: 10). During 1988 approval was given for a double major in Marketing and Hospitality Management within the BCom. The first group of students were enrolled in 1989. The course was designed to meet the demand for managers in the hotel, resort, and restaurant industries (UNSW Annual Report 1988: 35). On 18 June 2007 Council noted the renaming of the Faculty of Business to the Australian School of Business at UNSW, as approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board (CL07/33). On 2 July 2014 the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee approved a change in name of the faculty to the UNSW Australia Business School, effective from 23 July 2014.
