    In 1989, as part of a Commonwealth Government initiative to re-organise tertiary education, legislation was enacted by the New South Wales Parliament to transfer the governance of the City Art Institute from the NSW Institute of Arts to the University of New South Wales and became the College of Fine Arts. The University of New South Wales College Of Fine Arts Students' Association was an independent student organisation of the University and was accountable to the University Council. The aims of the Association were to oversee and encourage student activities within the College of Fine Arts, support affiliated Constituent Clubs, Associations and Societies, to provide materials, equipment and other facilities to students when necessary, represent a recognised means of communication between students, the College administration and the University, to promote co-operation between members and students in other educational institutions, to undertake other matters of interest as arises and to promote the welfare of students of the College. The Student Association also had representation on all College committees and boards and was financed by a compulsory fee collected by the College on behalf of the Association as part of enrolment procedure. All students of the College were members of the Students' Association of which the Student Representative Council was the elected executive and was a chapter of the UNSW Students' Union. The Students' Association was involved in on-campus ventures including The Palate Café, The Art Materials Store and various social activities. It was also involved in both on and offsite galleries, including: The Works Gallery: The Works Gallery was an on-campus gallery established in the Greene Road campus of the City Art Institute in September 1987. The Works Gallery was involved in local, travelling and exchange exhibitions. Arthaus Gallery: The Arthaus Gallery had its origins in the 'Butchers Exhibit', an independent artist run gallery located at 20 Palmer Lane, East Sydney, established by four students of the Alexander Mackie College, which ran from 1982 until 1984. The City Art Institute Students' Association took over the operation and maintained it as a gallery that catered for students and emerging artists, changing its name to the Arthaus Gallery. In 1990 the Gallery moved to new premises at 379 South Dowling Street, initially calling itself Arthaus Too to cover the transition period between the two premises. The Gallery was run by a committee of students from the College of Fine Arts, and other interested parties, and financed by the Student Association. The Arthaus Gallery was closed in August 1999. Kudos Gallery: Kudos Gallery opened on 23 September 1998 in Paddington. It was run by the Student Association of the College of Fine Arts. The objective of the Kudos Gallery was to facilitate the curation of exhibitions spanning across all schools, these being the School of Arts, School of Design and Applied Arts, School of Art History Theory, and School of Art Education. Representatives from each school formed committee members of Kudos Gallery Exhibition Committee. In 2007 Arc@UNSW became the new student organisation for Kensington and COFA campuses of the University of New South Wales. Arc@UNSW continued the administration of the Kudos Gallery.     The International, Professional & Continuing Education (IPACE) Institute was formed as a result of the amalgamation of the Educational Services Unit of Unisearch and the Continuing Education Support Unit (file 892386, Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee 21 June 1989) effective from 1 July 1989. It operated as a division of Unisearch Ltd and was initially headed by Director Robert Moorcroft. The Professional & Continuing Education Activities report for 1989 noted that The role of IPACE is to enhance the University's capacity to meet the professional development and training needs of industry, commerce, government and the professions by means of a very flexible, client-oriented approach The institute was comprised of six divisions: attended courses, conferences, instructional design and open learning, international programs, Study Abroad and administration. By the 25 February 1993 meeting of the Unisearch Board, the institute had changed its name to the Institute of Professional Education. It did, however, retain the acronym IPACE. In early 1997, the areas of IPACE focussing on Multimedia, International Programs and Study Abroad became independent units, while the professional education section continued as Unisearch Professional Education (UPE) (Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee, 24 September 1997). At the 6 July 1998 meeting of Council it was resolved that UPE should be incorporated into the Division of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic Affairs) within the university (CL98/47b). As a result all UPE staff were moved into the interim Education Development Group with effect from 16 October 1998 (file 990446) and the UPE ceased to exist.     This series consists of the official administrative files of the Sydney College of Advanced Education (SCAE). Each item consists of a number of paper sheets or brochures contained in an official file folder. The files have been created by the central administrative of the college and relate to all manner of college business, including property, courses, committees and publications. The files are arranged in file number order. Some of the contents of the files have been continued past the date of existance of the SCAE following the files' transfer to successor custodians, such as the City Art Institute and College of Fine Arts. Similarly, the contents of some files appears to have inititally originated during the time of Alexander Mackie College before being placed on a SCAE file.     This series contains the handbooks of the Institute of Administration. Each item is a typed, paper-bound volume, which appear to have been released on a yearly basis. They contain information about the courses organised by the institute, as well as other general information about the institute. The Archives currently only holds items from this series for the years 1978 - 1997. It is unclear if any further handbooks were released.

    The Board of Management of the Institute of Administration was created by Council on 14th March, 1960 (resolution 60/20). At that time it was noted that the Board would be a planning and organizing body, but has no powers to commit the University. It is under the day-to-day control of the Vice-Chancellor and responsible through him to the University Council. In academic affairs it reports to the Professorial Board. The inaugural meeting of the Board was on 28th March, 1960 with Professor J. P. Baxter as Chairman. Council replaced the Board with an Advisory Committee on 14th May, 1979 (resolution 79/53i).     The Administration Committee was formed at the 27th August, 1947 meeting of the New South Wales Institute of Technology Developmental Council. The initial membership of the Committee was composed of W. C. Wurth, H. J. Conde, A. Denning, R. C. Harrison, Professor Le Fevre, F. M. Mathews, P. D. Riddell and R. J. Webster. The responsibilities of the Committee were: 1. Title of Institute and its functions relative to universities and technical colleges. 2. Form of control - corporate body, royal charter, constitution. 3. Titles and duties of administration officers and bodies, academic staff, groups and departments. 4. Programme for the immediate future. 5. Consideration of the legal aspects and legal status of diplomas and degrees, and matters incidental thereto. 6. Legislation required immediately. 7. Further legislation required in the future. The first meeting of the Committee took place on 3rd September, 1947. Five meetings were held in all, with the final meeting taking place on 3rd August, 1948.

    The position of the bursar was approved through Resolution 405 (Council Meeting, 29 March 1954). Mr J O A Bourke was appointed bursar of the university commencing duties on 6 April 1954 (UNSW: A portrait: 30). Before joining the University, Mr Bourke had been associated with the staffing arrangements for the university in his capacity as an inspector of the Public Service Board and as an assistant director of Technical Education (The University of New South Wales - Its History and Progress: 26). The Division of the Bursar was established through Resolution 427 (Council Meeting, 10 May 1954) under Section 27 of the Technical Education and New South Wales University of Technology Act, 1949 (Act No. 11, 1949). The division was responsible for the administration of personnel and finance matters. The work of the division was originally undertaken by Mr Bourke and 10 clerical officers. By 1961 in the publication entitled The University of New South Wales defined the work of the division. The Bursar, with a Deputy Bursar and Accountant, is responsible for providing the administrative services relating to finance, personnel, development and maintenance of buildings, equipment and grounds. These duties are carried out by an Accounts Branch and by sections entitled Appointments; Personnel; Building Planning and Development; Buildings and Grounds (Maintenance); Property; Purchasing and Records. (The University of New South Wales: 11) On 13 July 1970 through Council Resolution 70/94 (Council Meeting, 13 July 1970) the appointment of the then bursar, E H Davis, was changed to Assistant Principal and Bursar and the division became known as the Division of the Assistant Principal and Bursar with its functions continuing to cover financial and personnel matters of the university. In 1984 the central administration of the university was reorganised into two divisions - Administration and Planning and Information - with a reorganisation of functions that had once been undertaken by the divisions of the registrar and the bursar. The Deputy Principal (Planning and Information) headed a division which contained the Computing Services Department, the Financial Services Department and the Planning Services Department. While the financial function once administered by the Division of the Bursar were retained within Division of Deputy Principal (Planning and Information), the personnel function now was overseen by the Deputy Principal (Administration). (UNSW Annual Report 1985: 9, 70-1) In September 1990 the central administration of the university was reorganised again resulting in the Division of the Bursar and Deputy Principal which assumed most of the functions previously undertaken by the Division of Deputy Principal (Planning and Information). The Staff Office and the Senior Appointments Unit became the responsibility of the renamed division which also encompassed the Financial Services Department and the Computing Services Department. (UNSW Annual Report 1990: 188-192) In September 1991 the Staff Office and the Senior Appointments Unit were transferred to the Division of the Registrar and Deputy Principal. (UNSW Annual Report 1991: 189) During 1992 the Division assumed responsibility for field stations, the Audio Visual Unit, and the Educational Testing Centre. (UNSW Annual Report 1992: 183) In 1995 as part of the administrative restructure resulting from the Chancellery Plan 1995 - 2000 review process the Division of the Bursar and Deputy Principal was abolished and most of its functions transferred to the Division of the Executive Director Business and Finance which was led by Chris Lidbury (Planning Committee of Council, 3 May 1995).
