    Description
    The Department of Mathematics existed from the very beginning of the university - 1 July 1949. Initially, however, it was only a servicing department that still had most of its roots in the Sydney Technical College. It was only when Geoffrey Bosson - previously the lecturer in charge of the department - was made an Associate Professor on 1 January, 1951 that mathematics began to move away from its Sydney Technical College foundations and became a member of the Faculty of Science (Technology, Vol. 10, No. 1). On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Mathematics came into existence (resolution 153). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Mathematics was transferred to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Mathematics (resolution CL001/49). On 15 May 2006 Council changed the name of the school to the School of Mathematics & Statistics (resolution CL06/36). In August 2006 the head of the School of Mathematics & Statistics was Professor Michael Cowling. The school had three departments - Applied Mathematics, Pure Mathematics & Statistics.     The Board of Studies in Science was created by Council on 14th May, 1973 through resolution 73/86. This resolution detailed that the Board was to discharge the functions of a faculty in relation to the academic administration of the Science course (397) leading to the degree of Bachelor of Science. Prior to the existence of the Board, the Faculties of Science and the Biological Sciences had found it difficult to communicate over the arrangements for Science course (397) (file 00027848, 96A3, Box 3). The first meeting of the Board took place on 9th October, 1973, with Professor R. M. Golding as the Board's initial chair. On 8th March, 1976, under resolution 76/45, Council changed the designation of the Science course (397) to the Science & Mathematics course (397). Consequently, to reflect this difference, at the same time Council altered the Board's name to the Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics. The Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics was disestablished by Council on 10th April, 2000 (resolution CL000/15). The last meeting of the Committee was held on 8th March, 2000.     This appears to be the same Committee as the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science / Science & Mathematics Course of the Board of Studies in Science / Science & Mathematics, briefly operating under a different name and function. At the 9th February, 1977 meeting of the Executive Committee of the Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics, resolution 77/15 was passed that the ad hoc Committee to review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science & Mathematics course be asked to review all double degrees offered between the Board of Studies and other faculties.     The Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science Course was formed at the meeting of the Board of Studies in Science on 20th March, 1974 (resolution 74/2). The Committee's aim was to review the Science course paying particular attention to the aims & philosophies of the course, with Professor R. M Golding as its convenor. In 1976, as a consequence of the name change of the Science course (397) and the Board of Studies, the Committee became the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science & Mathematics Course. On 19th July, 1978, the Executive Committee of the Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics passed a resolution (78/92i) that the ad hoc committee be disbanded and replaced by a Planning & Development Committee.     This series consists of Publications of the School and Community Mathematics Project of the School of Teacher Education, Alexander Mackie College of Advanced Education. There are five booklets in this series. Included are two copies of Parents, Children, Mathematics: a sourcebook on infants and primary mathematics for parents - Extension Studies Program, and two copies of Parents, Children, Mathematics: a sourcebook on infants and primary mathematics for parents - School of Teacher Education. There is also one copy of Volunteer Teacher aides in Mathematics - School of Teacher Education.

    This series consists of minutes, agendas and papers of the Board of Studies in Science / Science & Mathematics Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science / Science & Mathematics Course. The series reflects the Board's change of name from the Board of Studies in Science to the Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics on 8th March, 1976 (Council resolution 76/45). The material is typed and maintained in chronological order in manila folders. Agendas are normally presented first, followed by the minutes of the previous meeting and any attached papers. The minutes indicate meeting date, time and place; those present and apologies; matters discussed and resolutions passed by the Committee. The papers consist of reports or other submissions to be discussed by the Committee. The majority of minutes have been signed as approved by the Chairman at a subsequent Board meeting. For a small number of meetings, the Archives only holds copies of the minutes - not the official signed versions. Minutes, agendas & papers for the 1978 meetings of this Committee are held with series 5 in folders five and six.

    This series consists of the Presentation of Prizes for the annual School Mathematics Competition of the School of Mathematics. The material is typed and maintained in a manilla folder. It consists of booklets that lists the names of those individuals who were awarded prizes in the competition for a particular year. The Archives holdings of this series are incomplete. It holds items for the annual presentation booklets for the years 1963-1985 and copies until 2004.

The material is typed and maintained in a manilla folder and includes booklets, leaflets, reports, and other material as released by the school, including program information. Also included in this series are copies of A Brief History of the Department of Statistics 1948 - 1983 by J. B. Douglas.

    This series consists of Parabola of the School of Mathematics. Each publication is typed and paper bound, and is a mathematics magazine for secondary school students. Each issue contains maths-related articles and questions, intended to stimulate interest in Mathematics among secondary school students. The University Archives does not hold a complete collection of these works.

    The Planning & Development Committee was established at the Executive Committee of the Board of Studies in Science & Mathematics on 19th July, 1978 (resolution 78/92iii) in place of the Ad Hoc Committee to Review the Aims & Philosophy of the Science & Mathematics Course. Its first meeting was held on 18th September, 1978, with Professor R. M. Golding as Chairman. The Committee appears to have remained in existence until the Board of Studies was disestablished by Council on 10th April, 2000 (resolution CL000/15).
