    The exact starting date of the School Executive Committee of the School of Mechanical Engineering (1951 - 1967) / School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (1967 - 1990) is unknown but it was in place by 8th September 1961, which is the earliest meeting of the committee the University Archives holds minutes of. The committee comprised all professorial members of the School and was chaired by the Head of the School. The committee's principle duties were to consider policy matters, staffing, promotions, academic matters, financial allocations, and all other major administrative matters. The committee met monthly.

    Annual reports of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering by the head of school to the school's Visiting Committee. The reports were presented to the Visiting Committee prior to their annual meeting and some of the reports have notices of meeting for the Visiting Committee attached.

    At the instigation of the head of school, a Course Revision Working Party of the Education Committee of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering was formed in 1986. The inaugural meeting of the working party was held on 21st August 1986. The functions of the working party include (a) the examination and monitoring of the structure and content of all undergraduate programs offered by the school, and (b) making recommendations for the revision / modification of the programs in order to maintain their relevance to community needs and industry demands. A committee with similar functions, known as the Course Revision Committee of the School of Mechanical Engineering (1951 - 1967) / Mechanical and Industrial Engineering (1967 - ), was in operation in 1965 - 1971 (for more details refer to Agency #300).

    Description
    Visiting Committees, including the one for the School of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, were constituted under Resolution 68/137 of Council as a means of establishing a close liaison between industry and appropriate schools of the university. A report by A.H. Willis to the Professorial Board in May 1968 had found that the advisory panel system, dating from March 1950, did no longer hold any benefits. The report also recommended the abolition of advisory panels by the end of 1968 and the panels to be replaced by Visiting Committees. Resolution 68/126 of the Professorial Board requested A.H. Willis to present more specific proposals on the membership and terms of reference of the proposed Visiting Committees. His following recommendations to the Professorial Board from 11 June 1968 were put to Council though the recommendations of the Academic Committee in their document from 17 June 1968. Council at its meeting on 8 July 1968 resolved 68/137 - that Council adopts the terms of reference and membership of Visiting Committees as set out in the document presented dated 17th June 1968. The document recommended to Council that the Visiting Committees be established by Council on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor who consulted with deans and heads of school regarding the establishment of the committee and the chairmanship. The chairman, appointed by Council, was chosen from members external to the university. The terms of reference for Visiting Committees were 1. to appraise the educational programmes of the School in relation to the needs of industry and professional practice 2. to receive and discuss the Annual Report of the Head of the School 3. to report to the Council on the special problems facing the School 4. to aid the development of the School in any way possible The Visiting Committee of the School of Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, comprising distinguished members of the professional fields related to the school's activities, replaced the Mechanical Engineering Advisory Panel. The Committee met annually and held its first meeting on 29 October 1969 with Mr WJ Wait, Chief Mechanical Engineer - Department of Railways, in the Chair. The Committee was reconstituted every three years.

This publication is an illustrated history of the School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. A list of page numbers and Archives refernce numbers has been included in the book to reference any material housed in the University Archives.

    This series comprises the papers and minutes of meetings of the Fluid Mechanics Committee of the School of Mechanical Engineering. The meetings discussed aspects of the Fluid Mechanics course and its operation within the school. The Archives currently only holds items from the series for the period 1960 - 1961 - it is unclear how long the committee was in existence.

The committee considered requests for revisions to programs offered by the school and make recommendations for the implementation of these changes to the head of school and the school executive committee.

    Description
    The Department of Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics was created within the School of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the 26 July 1967 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The first head of department was Professor R. A. A. Bryant. On 11 September 1967 Council altered the name of the school to the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (resolution 67/167). On 8 November 1989 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of all the departments within the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, including the Department of Fluid Mechanics & Thermodynamics (file 00892512).
