    Description
    This series consists of Engineering Mechanics a course book by J. Hirschhorn, senior lecturer in Mechanical Engineering. This item is a typed, spiral-bound volume, which was a course book for Mechanical Engineering. The publication is not dated but was used by the donor, Michael Haynes (03A7), during his studies in the 1950s.

    Description
    This series comprises the agendas, papers and minutes of meetings of the Head of School's Advisory Committee (HOSAC) of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The committee met monthly except for December, January and February to discuss a wide range of issues affecting the operation of the school including finance, staff, courses, student enrolments and performance, and research.

    Description
    The Department of Applied Mechanics was created within the School of Mechanical Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering at the 26 July 1967 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. The first head of department was Professor N. L. Svensson. On 11 September 1967 Council altered the name of the school to the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering (resolution 67/167). On 8 November 1989 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of all the departments within the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering, including the Department of Applied Mechanics (file 00892512). On 9 September 1985 Council approved the disestablishment of the Department of Agricultural Engineering and the transferral of the school's staff to the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering effective from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).     Description
    A memorandum from the head of school to members of the academic staff of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering dated 11th August 1986 stated that an Advisory Committee to the Head of School (HOSAC) would be established as a result of a special meeting of the School Assembly held on 21st July 1986. Membership of the committee consisted of statutory members, ex-officio members, members by virtue of responsibilities, and elected members. At the committee's inaugural meeting on 26th September 1986, the head of school Prof. R.A.A. Bryant, advised that HOSAC would supersede the School Executive Committee. The committee would be solely committed to providing advice to the head of school on matters relevant to the efficient operation of the school. The head of school, in turn, would report on developments and actions taken. HOSAC would meet monthly except for December, January and February to discuss matters such as the school budget, staffing, remuneration, teaching load, programmes / courses, enrolments, research projects and funding, equipment and laboratories.

    Description
    On 5 December 2006 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the Centre for Infrastructure Engineering and Safety. The main purpose of the Centre was to focus high-level UNSW research in structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering materials and computational mechanics and promote multi-disciplinary collaboration primarily across the faculties of engineering and science. The Centre was located within the Faculty of Engineering and the initial director was Professor Mark Bradford (file 2006/2761). In 2010 the director of the Centre remained Professor Mark Bradford.     On 12 September 1960 Council approved the creation of a chair of Nuclear Engineering. At the same time it was noted that it was envisaged when this chair was filled, a School of Nuclear Engineering would come into being in the Faculty of Engineering with the new chair at its head (resolution 60/112). On 13 March 1961 Council appointed Dr J. J. Thompson to this position (resolution 61/2). He took up his appointment in May 1961 and so the School of Nuclear Engineering came into being. On 9 September 1985 Council approved the disestablishment of the School of Nuclear Engineering and the transferral of the school's staff to the School of Mechanical & Industrial Engineering effective from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96).     Description
    This series comprises the agendas, papers and minutes of meetings of the School Assembly of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. Included is a document which was put together by a working party of the assembly as a response to the report of an External Review Committee (ERC) for the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The ERC was set up by the Vice-Chancellor in August 1988 to review the school's situation which was found to be lacking in purpose and declining in its funding.

    Description
    In March 1950 the University Council set up a system of advisory panels for the purpose of securing advice on the structure and content of courses. It was considered that the standing of such courses in the community would be enhanced as a result of critical examination by panels of advisers who were highly regarded in their professional fields and had no direct connection with the university. The exact starting date of the Mechanical Engineering Advisory Panel is unknown but it was in place on 12th May 1955 which was the earliest meeting date of the panel that the University Archives holds minutes of. The advisory panels generally met annually.
