    The exact starting date of the School Advisory Committee of the School of Mechanical Engineering is unknown but it was in place by 23rd November 1960 which was the earliest meeting date of the committee the University Archives holds minutes of. The committee comprised all senior lecturers, supervising lecturers, and lecturers in charge - and those temporarily in charge - of sections. The functions of the committee were as follows: (1) to deal with all matters referred to it by the School Executive and section committees; (2) to make recommendations to the School Executive with respect to major plant and minor plant requirements and material requirements of the different sections; (3) to initiate proposals for improving courses and delivery methods; (4) to co-ordinate proposals for syllabus revision which effect more than one section; (5) to act as the School Examination Committee; (6) to consider all matters of interest to the school which come within the jurisdiction of the Faculty of Engineering

    The exact starting date of the Higher Degree Committee (HDC) of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is unknown but it was in place by 4th February 1987, which was the earliest meeting date of the committee the University Archives holds minutes of. The primary functions of the committee included the periodic review of the structure and content of the post-graduate programs / courses offered by the school, recommending revisions / modifications to existing programs / courses to ensure their relevance to industry demands and community needs, and recommending the introduction of new courses as well as the abolition of courses considered to have become obsolete.

Materials in this series are interfiled with other documentation such as correpondence and minutes of meetings of other committees, and were in the custody of R.T.B. McKenzie, an academic staff of the thermodynamics section of the school.

    Description
    The establishment of the Centre for Manufacturing and Automation within the Faculty of Engineering was endorsed at the 19 February 1986 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee. Dr G. C. I. Lin was appointed as the Centre's first director, commencing from April 1986. On 2 July 1987 the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, Professor N. L. Svensson, wrote to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor M. Chaikin, advising that administrative control of the Centre had been transferred to the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering. The Centre was officially opened on 30 September 1987 (file 860345). On 2 April 1990 the name of the school was changed by Council to the School of Mechanical & Manufacturing Engineering (resolution CL90/36). The Centre was closed on 31 December 1996 (file 860345).     The exact starting date of the School Assembly of the School of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering is not known but it would be much earlier than 11th June 1987 which was the earliest meeting date of the assembly the University Archives holds minutes of. As stated in the minutes this was the 23rd meeting of the assembly. The School Assembly was an open forum where any staff member could speak and vote on any topic relevant to the school, and which conveyed its options to the head of school for his consideration. The formally constituted members of the assembly were all academic staff, the senior administrative officer, and a representative of each of the following groups, namely professional officers, other professional staff such as programmers and project scientists, secretarial staff, technical staff, workshop staff, and other general staff.
