    Description
    On 12 September 1949 Council resolved in principle that a chair of Metallurgy should be appointed (resolution 9). This was formally approved at Council's 14 November 1949 meeting (resolution 27). On 9 July 1951 R. H. Myers was appointed to the chair (resolution 134). He entered on duty on 3 May 1952 (UNSW: Its History & Progress) and thus the School of Metallurgy came into existence within the Faculty of Science from this date. On 14 May, 1956 the Faculty of Technology was formed by Council (resolution 761i) and the School of Metallurgy became one of the foundation schools within the new faculty. On 9 May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). On 9 September 1985 Council resolved to rename the school as the School of Materials Science & Engineering effective 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci). At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Materials Science & Engineering was moved to the newly formed Faculty of Science & Technology. On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Materials Science & Engineering (resolution CL001/49). In 2007 the School of Materials Science & Engineering was headed by Professor Oleg Ostrovski.     Description
    The Department of Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy was established within the newly created School of Mineral Resources by Council on 9 September 1985 within the Faculty of Applied Science effective 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci). The school had only a short life under this name, however, as on 3 February 1986 it was renamed the School of Mines (Council resolution 86/10). The first head of the department was Associate Professor Robert Robins. On 28 November 1990 the Vice-Chancellor approved a proposal to disestablish the department.     On 28 November 1990 the Vice-Chancellor approved the initial proposal to establish the Centre for Minerals Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Science to take over much of the operations of the Department of Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy. The final proposal for the Centre was then approved at the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee meeting on 10 July 1991, before the Centre was finally formally approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 20 May 1992. The main aim of the Centre was co-ordinate and co-operate multi-school and multi-disciplinary teaching and research activities in mineral processing including extractive metallurgy within the Faculty of Applied Science. The first director of the Centre was Dr Tam Tran (file 911225). On 1 July 1997 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of the Centre effective from 30 Jun 1997 (file 911225).     Description
    On 12 September 1960 Council gave its approval for a full-time course in Ceramic Engineering to commence in the School of Chemical Technology in the Faculty of Applied Science from 1961 (resolution 60/131). At that time it was also noted that the appointment of an Associate Professor is envisaged in order to effectively develop the Department of Ceramic Engineering. Dr E. R. McCartney was appointed to this position of associate professor on 10 July 1961 (Council resolution 61/77). On 12 November 1979 as a result of the merger of the schools of Chemical Technology and Chemical Engineering, the department was moved to the School of Metallurgy effective from 1 January 1980 (Council resolution 79/157). Following a review of Faculty of Applied Science, on 9 September 1985 Council resolved to rename the School of Metallurgy as the School of Materials Science & Engineering and transfer all staff of the Department of Ceramic Engineering to the Department of Materials effective from 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).     The Faculty of Technology was formed by Council on 14th May, 1956 (resolution 761i). This resolution also dictated that the Faculty would be concerned with developments in the Technologies of Fuel, Paint, Plastics and Rubber, and Ceramics and Nuclear Technology. The Faculty, under Professor D. W. Phillips, was initiated with five Schools Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering & Applied Geology, Metallurgy, Wool Technology and Textile Technology. The first meeting of the Faculty occurred on 29th June, 1956. On 9th May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).
