    Description
    Visiting Committees, including the one for the School of Mining Engineering, were constituted under Resolution 68/137 of Council as a means of establishing a close liaison between industry and appropriate schools of the university. A report by A.H. Willis to the Professorial Board in May 1968 had found that the advisory panel system, dating from March 1950, no longer held any benefits. The report also recommended the abolition of advisory panels by the end of 1968 and the panels to be replaced by Visiting Committees. Resolution 68/126 of the Professorial Board requested A.H. Willis to present more specific proposals on the membership and terms of reference of the proposed Visiting Committees. His following recommendations to the Professorial Board from 11 June 1968 were put to Council though the recommendations of the Academic Committee in their document from 17 June 1968. Council at its meeting on 8 July 1968 resolved 68/137 - that Council adopts the terms of reference and membership of Visiting Committees as set out in the document presented dated 17th June 1968. The document recommended to Council that the Visiting Committees be established by Council on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor who consulted with deans and heads of school regarding the establishment of the committee and the chairmanship. The chairman, appointed by Council, was chosen from members external to the university. The terms of reference for Visiting Committees were 1. to appraise the educational programmes of the School in relation to the needs of industry and professional practice 2. to receive and discuss the Annual Report of the Head of the School 3. to report to the Council on the special problems facing the School 4. to aid the development of the School in any way possible The Visiting Committee for the School of Mining Engineering, comprising distinguished members of the professional fields related to the school's activities, replaced the Mining Engineering Advisory Panel. The Committee met annually and held its first meeting on 21 July 1969 with Mr R. T. Madigan in the Chair. The Committee was reconstituted every three years. On 2 February 1987 Council approved the disestablishment of the Visiting Committee for the School of Mining Engineering (resolution 87/19).     Following the establishment of a Centre for Biomedical Engineering within the University an Advisory Committee to oversee the overall operating policy of the Centre was established in 1977 with the following membership: a) the Vice-Chancellor or his nominee b) fifteen nominees from appropriate schools in the faculties of Applied Science, Biological Sciences, Engineering, Medicine and Science. c) six nominees from the teaching and associated hospitals of the University d) up to six nominees from bodies outside the University with an interest in the activities of the Centre e) the Director of the Centre ex-officio Members of the Committee were appointed by the Vice- Chancellor to serve for a period of two years, with provision for renewal of membership. The Committee was to meet twice a year in March and September. Its first meeting was held on 15 March 1977. The Chair was the Vice-Chancellor's nominee, the registrar KL Jennings. At the second meeting of the Board on 19 Sep 1977, Resolution 77/1 described its role as follows: 1) to advise the Vice-Chancellor and Principal regarding the composition of the Management Committee of the Centre 2) to review and make recommendations concerning the policies and objectives of the Centre with particular regard to the following: *to advise the Centre in respect to priorities of both long and short term programmes; *to make recommendations regarding the integration of fund raising activities; *to evaluate and advise on needs in the community as appropriate to the work of the Centre; *to review and make recommendations on the academic content of courses at various levels; and *to promote public relations and provide information and education in respect of biomedical engineering In August 1981 letters of invitation went out for renewal of membership of the Board from 1 September 1981 to 31 August 1984.     On 28 November 1990 the Vice-Chancellor approved the initial proposal to establish the Centre for Minerals Engineering within the Faculty of Applied Science to take over much of the operations of the Department of Mineral Processing & Extractive Metallurgy. The final proposal for the Centre was then approved at the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee meeting on 10 July 1991, before the Centre was finally formally approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 20 May 1992. The main aim of the Centre was co-ordinate and co-operate multi-school and multi-disciplinary teaching and research activities in mineral processing including extractive metallurgy within the Faculty of Applied Science. The first director of the Centre was Dr Tam Tran (file 911225). On 1 July 1997 the Acting Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of the Centre effective from 30 Jun 1997 (file 911225).     Description
    The School of Applied Geology was created by Council within the Faculty of Applied Science on 9 September 1963 (resolution 63/183). The first head of school was Professor J. J. Frankel. On 9 September 1985 the School of Applied Geology was altered by Council from a school to a department within the School of Mineral Resources effective 1 January 1986 (resolution 85/96ci).
