    Description
    On 6 July 1998 Council gave its approval for the Department of Safety Science to be changed into a School of Safety Science in the Faculty of Science & Technology (resolution CL98/51b). On 18 June, 2001 Council resolved to disestablish the Faculty of Science & Technology and create a new single model Faculty of Science effective from 1 July, 2001 - including the School of Safety Science (resolution CL001/49). On 7 February 2008 the name of the school was changed to the School of Risk & Safety Sciences (Academic Board resolution AB08/02). On 29 January 2010 the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approved the disestablishment of the School of Risk and Safety Sciences according to the timetable provided.     Description
    On 10 December 1990 Council approved the creation of an independent department of Safety Science in the Faculty of Applied Science, effective from 1 January 1991. The department was based on the previous Centre for Safety Science, which was disestablished at the same time (resolution CL90/113). The first head of department was Professor Jean Cross. At the 2 December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1 July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). At the 3 February 1997 meeting of Council it was determined the Department of Safety Science would move to the newly created Faculty of Science & Technology from 1 July 1997 (resolution CL97/5a).     Description
    The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres.     The Cross Faculty Standing Committee for Science was created at the Council meeting on 10th April, 2000 (resolution CL000/15d). The Committee was assigned the delegated authority for the following programs: Science (3970), Advanced Science (3973, 3985, 3986, 3990), Environmental Science (3988, 3976), Medical Science (3991), Science - Communication (3932), Science - Media & Communications (3933), Combined Science/Arts (3930) and Advanced Science/Arts (3931), Combined Science/Social Science (3935) and Combined Advanced Science/Social Science (3936), Combined Science/Education (4075), the Science components of other combined degrees, Aviation (3980), Computer Science (3978), Information Systems (3979), Business Information Technology (3971), Geography (3010), Applied Geology (3000), Optometry (3950, 3951) and Safety Science (3877). With the establishment of a single Faculty of Science by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective 1st July 2001 (resolution CL001/49), the need for a Cross Faculty Standing Committee for Science came to a close.     The Faculty of Science & Technology was created by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 8th July, 1997 with Associate Professor A. H. Dooley as the Presiding Member. At this time, under Dean Colin Sutherland, the Faculty contained six schools, four departments, three Centres, the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility and the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit. The Faculty of Science & Technology was disestablished by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 26th April, 2001.     The Centre for Safety Science was established in 1986. Its operations were reviewed in 1990 and as a result the Centre was transferred from the Faculty of Engineering to the Faculty of Applied Science where it became an independent Department within that Faculty. On 10 December 1990 Council approved the creation of an independent department of Safety Science in the Faculty of Applied Science, effective from 1 January 1991. The department was based on the previous Centre for Safety Science, which was disestablished at the same time (resolution CL90/113).     In a memorandum dated 7th January 1990 the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Prof. A.D. Gilbert, made a request to the Vice-Chancellor to establish a Committee to Review the Centre for Safety Science. The committee comprised Prof. D.J. Anderson (president, academic board), Prof. D. StC. Black (head, School of Chemistry), Prof. C.J.D. Fell (dean, Faculty of Engineering), Prof. E.F. Lumbers (School of Physiology and Pharmacology), and Prof. P.A. Vinson (dean, Faculty of Professional Studies). The committee was to carry out the following tasks: (1) to evaluate the success of the Centre for Safety Science in fulfilling its aim to become 'the centre for teaching and research into matters related to health and safety in Australasia'; (2) to examine the staffing profile of the centre and make recommendations about filling the vacant positions; (3) to examine current strategies and administrative arrangements relating to teaching, and make recommendations; (4) to consider the management and advisory structures of the centre, its external links and its role and functions within the Faculty of Engineering; (5) to evaluate the option of creating a School of Safety Science in place of or in addition to the centre; (6) to make general recommendations about the future of the centre taking into account its prospective financial viability, the quality and importance of its contribution to the mission and goals of the university and the needs of the community In its report, completed in September 1990, the committee recommended the disestablishment of the Centre for Safety Science and the establishment of the Department of Safety Science within the School of Applied Science.
