    After considering the recommendations of the Australian Academy of Science for the monitoring of work involving recombinant DNA and on the advice of the University's Safety Committee, the Vice-Chancellor RH Myers established the University Biological Hazards Committee in February 1979. The inaugural meeting of the Committee was held on 1st June 1979, when Professor PW Gage was elected chairman. (File #33017) The Committee's principle objective was to formulate guidelines for work involving recombinant DNA within the University. In addition it was to monitor and advise the University Safety Committee of any work or project which it considered constituted a potential biological hazard to persons within the University, and to consider applications for permission to engage in any program of work involving recombinant DNA within the University and to report to the University Safety Committee on the outcome of all such applications. (File #33017) By 1980, the Committee had completed its main objective and its proposed guidelines were accepted by the Vice-Chancellor. The Committee then proposed revisions to its role and composition, and on 6th August 1980 the Vice-Chancellor approved its re-constitution as the Biosafety Committee. (File #33017) The Biosafety Committee was to continue and expand upon the work of the University Biological Hazards Committee. Its terms of reference were i) to advise the University Safety Committee on matters of biological safety; ii) to formulate and implement guidelines for work involving recombinant DNA; iii) to receive reports from the Biosafety Officer; iv) to report on its activities to the University Safety Committee; v) to advise departments on safe working techniques in the use of biological materials; and vi) to maintain liaison with extramural organisations concerned with biological safety. (File #33017) The minutes of the Committee date from 3rd April 1981 when the Chairman was Professor PW Gage, however it is possible that the Committee also met before this date. (File #353530) The Committee appears to have been known as the UNSW Institutional Biosafety Committee (UNSW IBC) from about 2002. In 2004 the Presiding Member was Professor Bernard Stewart, Head of the South Eastern Sydney Area Health Service Cancer Control Program. The UNSW IBC reviewed proposals from project supervisors for work that involved Genetically Modified Organisms. The Committee also conducted inspections of and reviewed applications for containment facilities.

    The Faculty of Technology was formed by Council on 14th May, 1956 (resolution 761i). This resolution also dictated that the Faculty would be concerned with developments in the Technologies of Fuel, Paint, Plastics and Rubber, and Ceramics and Nuclear Technology. The Faculty, under Professor D. W. Phillips, was initiated with five Schools Chemical Engineering, Mining Engineering & Applied Geology, Metallurgy, Wool Technology and Textile Technology. The first meeting of the Faculty occurred on 29th June, 1956. On 9th May, 1960, Council changed the name of the Faculty to the Faculty of Applied Science (resolution 60/55). At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Applied Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4).     In 1985 the Australian Research Grants Scheme (ARGS) introduced a new requirement that grant applications where the researcher intended using ionising radiation, would require an approval from a University radiation committee. In compliance, the University Safety Committee (USC), at its meeting on 18th April 1985, established the Radiation Safety Committee. The objective of the Committee was to assess ARGS applications for approval. (File #00008559) The inaugural meeting of the Radiation Safety Committee was held on 17th July 1985 with Dr R Rosen, the Radiation Safety Officer, as chairman. (File #850559) It appears that initially the Radiation Safety Committee may have been a Sub-Committee of the USC, and gradually adopted a more advisory role. (File #900400) In 1990, the Committee expanded its terms of reference to the following - i) to advise the Vice Chancellor on matters of radiation safety within the University, ii) to recommend institutional clearance for research grant applications as required for radiation work, and iii) to assist the University Safety Unit by providing radiation safety expertise as appropriate. (File #00085558). In 2004, the Presiding Member of the Radiation Safety Committee was A/Prof. Vincent Murray, of the School of Biotechnology and Biomolecular Science in the Faculty of Science.     The Centre for Safety Science Advisory Committee was established to advise the director and management committee on matters relating to the operation of the centre in particular policy, current activities and future operation. The committee met once or twice a year and comprised a chairman (appointed by the Vice-Chancellor, the chairman of the National Occupational Health and Safety Commission, the director of the National Institute of Occupational Health and Safety, dean of the Faculty of Engineering, dean of the Faculty of Medicine, director of the Centre, heads of schools participating in teaching and research in Safety Science, academic staff of the Centre, and four other members of academic staff appointed by the Vice-Chancellor.

    This series consists of minutes, agendas and papers of staff meetings of the School of Risk and Safety Sciences. The meetings are a vehicle for discussions and decisions on issues such as funding and staffing allocations, teaching methods, subjects of programs and course structure, performance of students and marking and assessment. The head of school also uses the meetings to report back on university and faculty business and developments. The Archives currently only holds items from this series for 2009.

    The Faculty of Engineering was established on 8th May, 1950 under Council resolution 54. Through a ruling by the Developmental Council engineering courses had already been in operation at Sydney Technical College from 1st March, 1948, but this resolution officially created the Faculty. Initially the Faculty contained four departments - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering - and was administered by Dean H. J. Brown. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty took place on 7th June, 1950. In 2013, the Faculty, under Dean Professor Graham Davies, included nine schools and nineteen Centres.
