    Description
    On 9 November 1959 the Faculty of Arts was created by Council, to be effective from 1st January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii) and Philosophy became one of the foundation schools within this new faculty. At the same meeting Professor Thornton was also appointed foundation professor of Philosophy and head of school (resolution 59/182). On 9 March 1964 Council decided to create two departments within the School of Philosophy - one as the Department of Philosophy and the other the Department of History and Philosophy of Science (resolution 64/34). On 9 May 1966 Council decided that the latter department would become its own independent school (resolution 66/86). Consequently the Department of Philosophy as an independent unit ceased to exist from this date, as it was esstentially absorbed into the remainder of the school. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Philosophy was disestablished effective 31 January 2007. It was amalgamated with the schools of History and History & Philosophy of Science to form the new School of History and Philosophy (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers).     Description
    The School of Modern Language Studies was established within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences at the 31 October 1994 meeting of Council, to be effective from 1 January 1995 (resolution CL94/86c). It replaced the previous schools of French, German & Russian Studies, Spanish & Latin American Studies and the Languages Unit. Initially the school contained the departments of Chinese & Indonesian, French, German & Russian Studies and Spanish & Latin American Studies, as well as the sections of Hebrew and Modern Greek. The first Head of School was John Brotherton. As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Modern Language Studies was re-named the School of Languages and Linguistics effective 31 January 2007 (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers). As part of this restructure, it was deemed that no school was to establish a departmental structure (Principles of Government-Feb 2007 in SRF - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences) and discipline advisors were instead created for each area of study. On 1 November 2011 the Academic Board recommended that the name of the school be changed to the School of International Studies effective from 1 January 2012 (resolution AB11/141). This was approved by the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board on 15 November 2011 (file 2011/06825). At its meeting on 4 December 2012, the Academic Board resolved (resolution AB12/80) that it be recommended that the Chancellor, Vice-Chancellor and President of the Academic Board approve: (i) The establishment of the School of Humanities and Languages, and as a concomitant action, (ii) The disestablishment of the School of Humanities and the School of International Studies, in the Facutty of Arts and Social Sciences, effective 1 July 2013. This was approved via e-mail on 19 December 2012 (file 2011/02865).     On 31 October 1994 Council created the Department of Chinese & Indonesian within the School of Modern Language Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences with effect from 1 January 1995 (resolution CL94/86c). The first head of department was Associate Professor David Reeve. On 3 July 2001 the Academic Board recommended that the department be re-named the Department of Chinese and Indonesian Studies (resolution AB01/34). As part of a Faculty of Arts restructure, the School of Modern Language Studies was re-named the School of Languages and Linguistics effective 31 January 2007 (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers). As part of this restructure, it was also deemed that no school was to establish a departmental structure (Principles of Government-Feb 2007 in SRF - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences) and discipline advisors were instead created for each area of study.     On 8 November 1982 Council redesignated the School of Russian as the Department of Russian in the Faculty of Arts, to be effective from 1 January 1983 (resolution 82/133). On 14 September 1987 Council resolved that in recognition of the restructuring and expansion of the existing teaching program to provide for a broad-based program in Russian studies, the department was re-named the Department of Russian Studies (resolution 87/99h). On 10 December 1990 Council amalgamated the School of German Studies & the Department of Russian Studies to form a new School of German & Russian Studies, which included the Department of German Studies and the Department of Russian Studies. At the same time the name of the faculty was altered to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108). On 31 October 1994 Council resolved to replace the school with a Department of German & Russian Studies within the School of Modern Language Studies effective from 1 January 1995 (resolution CL94/86c).     On 12 September 1949 Council resolved that instruction in the humanities be compulsory in all faculties of the university and that discussion regarding the establishment of a chair in the humanities should begin (resolution 6). On 14 November 1949 it was formally affirmed that a chair in this field should be appointed. At the same time a Faculty of Humanities was established in principle (resolution 31). The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was formally established by Council on 12th July, 1954 (resolution 437g). The Faculty originally contained only the single School of Humanities and Social Sciences. The Faculty's inaugural meeting took place on 27th April, 1955, and as no Dean had yet been appointed, Assoc. Professor Auchmuty took the Chair. Professor R. M. Hartwell was later named the first Dean of the Faculty by Council on 14th November, 1955 (resolution 679). The Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences was disestablished by Council on 9th November, 1959, to be effective from 31st December, 1959 (resolution 59/204i).     Description
    On 10 November 1958 Council appointed C. Robert Quentin as Acting Senior Lecturer in Dramatic Art for an initial period of one year from 1 January 1959 (resolution 58/178). Thus the Department of Dramatic Art came into being in the School of Humanities & Social Sciences with Mr Quentin at the head. On 14 September 1959 Robert Quentin's appointment as a Senior Lecturer was confirmed and this was to take effect from 1 January 1960 (Council resolution 59/147). At their next meeting on 9 November 1959, however, Council decided to appoint Mr Quentin as an Associate Professor effective immediately from that date (resolution 59/182). At the same meeting, the Faculty of Arts was established, effective from 1 January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii) and a Department of Drama was established within the faculty's new School of English. On 11 March 1963 Council determined that the Department of Drama would be removed from the School of English and become an independent entity within the Faculty of Arts (resolution 63/39).
