    Description
    The Bachelor of Social Work degree course was approved by Council on 14 September 1964 to begin operations in 1965 (resolution 64/170). At the 8 October 1963 meeting of the Professorial Board it had already been deemed that the School of Sociology be academically responsible for the proposed degree course in Social Work under the administration of the Board of Vocational Studies (resolution 63/365). It was not, however, until 13 September 1965 that a position of Associate Professor of Social Work within the School of Sociology was created by Council (resolution 65/104). On 8 November 1965 Norma Parker was appointed to this position (resolution 65/164) - taking up duty on 1 February 1966. On 11 September 1967 the Department of Social Work was officially created within the Board of Vocational Studies with all staff directly involved in the degree of Bachelor of Social Work to be separated from the School of Sociology (resolution 67/160). Associate Professor Parker was named as the first head of department. On 13 November 1967 Council established the first chair of social work and noted that when the chair of Social Work is established and filled, the Department of Social Work shall become the School of Social Work. Professor R. J. Lawrence was appointed to this position on 8 July 1968 (resolution 68/109) and when he took up duty on 28 November 1968 the School of Social Work came into being. On 12 November, 1973 Council changed the name of the Board of Vocational Studies to the Board of Professional Studies (resolution 73/231). A year later, on 11 November 1974, Council approved the reconstitution of the Board into the Faculty of Professional Studies from 20 January 1975 (resolution 74/227). At the 2 December 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Professional Studies was disestablished effective 1 January 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). As a result, from this date the School of Social Work was transferred to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Social Work was disestablished effective 31 January 2007. It was amalgamated with the schools of Politics & International Relations, Sociology & Anthropology and Social Science & Policy to form the new School of Social Sciences & International Studies (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers).     On 10 May 1976 Council approved in principle the establishment of a Social Welfare Research Centre (resolution 76/73). The initial functions of the Centre were outlined as: - to undertake and sponsor research work on important aspects of social welfare in Australia - to provide opportunities for postgraduate study of social welfare - to arrange services and conferences to foster understanding of and to elucidate issues in the field of social welfare and - to arrange for the publication of results of research and studies carried out in or under the aegis of the centre (file 370599 - 99A107/36). On 8 May 1978 Council affirmed its approval of the establishment of the Centre (resolution 78/72). On 15 January 1980 the Centre was formally launched, with Dr Adam Graycar, who had taken up his position on 1 January, in place as the founding Director (SRF - Social Welfare Research Centre). During 1989 a review of the Centre was conducted. As a result of the review, the Centre was re-named the Social Policy Research Centre effective from 1 January 1990 (Council resolution CL89/76, V199). Initially the Centre existed outside the faculty structure, but on 5 August 2003 the Academic Board endorsed the proposal that the Centre would be located within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences from that date (resolution AB03/34).     The Faculty of Arts was created at the 9th November, 1959 meeting of Council, to be effective from 1st January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii). The initial meeting of the Faculty occurred on 24th February 1960, with Professor Morven Brown as Dean. In the beginning, the Faculty had five schools - English, History, Philosophy, Sociology and Librarianship. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). In 2013 the Faculty, under Dean Professor James Donald, consisted of five schools and seven Centres.     The School of Social Sciences & International Studies was established as part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, effective from 31 January 2007. It was created out of the amalgamation of the schools of Social Work, Politics & International Relations, Sociology & Anthropology and Social Science & Policy (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers). On 1 November 2011 the Academic Board recommended that the name of the school be changed to the School of Social Sciences effective from 1 January 2012 (resolution AB11/141).     In 1997 the Social Relations of Disability Research Network was created by a group of academics working in universities in the Sydney area. Its prime instigator was Ms Helen Meekosha, who obtained the first government funding for the project 1 July 1997, although work had started from April of that year. Its goals were: -to stimulate the development of scholarship in New South Wales and more widely in Australia, which was cross disciplinary and which focussed on social, cultural and political issues in the field of disability and -to facilitate the professional involvement and development of researchers and scholars with disabilities, in the field of disability studies. Based at the School of Social Work, within the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences, the network began initially with a grant from the Commonwealth Government's Research Council and then continued with the resources from the Vice Chancellors of UNSW, UTS and UWS. The network held monthly seminars and an annual conference (file 972006). In 2001 the Network entered a partnership with a number of disability sector organisations to establish the Disability Studies & Research Institute (DSARI), which was incorporated in June 2002. During 2003 the educational activities of the Network were incorporated into DSARI, located at People with Disabilities in Australia, an external body, although the Network's seminar program continued to be organised by the university's School of Social Work (file 2003/0490).     On 15 June 1988 the university received a grant from the Australian Government's Multicultural & Cross-cultural Supplementation Program (MACSP) for the establishment of a Centre for Cross-Cultural Social Work Education, which was associated with the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Professional Studies (file 890908). Dr Barbara Ferguson took up her position as director of the Centre on 4 October 1988 (file 951339). At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Professional Studies was disestablished effective 1st January, 1997 and so the School of Social Work was moved to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL96/88/3). On 19 October 1995 the Vice-Chancellor renewed the Centre for a further three year period. By the Centre's 1998 report, however, it was concluded that in the current climate, interest in and funding for this field has declined significantly. At the same time, interest in and need for research related to refugee issues has increased. Consequently, considerable time and effort was expended throughout 1998 to develop a viable proposal to establish an interdisciplinary Centre for Refugee Research. As this was successful, the Director Dr Barbara Ferguson became the director of the new centre and the Centre for Cross Cultural Social Work Education ceased to exist at the end of 1998 (file 951339).     On 8 July 1957 Council appointed Professor Morven Brown as Professor of Sociology and head of the School of Humanities & Social Sciences (resolution 57/69). Although Professor Brown took up duties on 1 February 1958, sociology did not become a discipline at the university until 1960. This occurred when, at the 9th November, 1959 meeting of Council, the Faculty of Arts was created, to be effective from 1st January, 1960 (resolution 59/204ii) and Sociology became one of the foundation schools within this new faculty, with Professor Morven Brown at its head. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). On 25 August 2003 the school was re-named the School of Sociology & Anthropology (Council resolution CL03/74). As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Sociology & Anthropology was disestablished effective 31 January 2007.     In May 1963 it was decided that a chair in political science would be advertised and when it was filled, the Department of Political Science in the Faculty of Arts would become a school once more (Council 11 May 1963, 63/60). This occurred on 13 July 1964 with the appointment of Professor Douglas McCallum (resolution 64/120), who began work in August 1964. On 10th December, 1990 Council changed the name of the Faculty of Arts to the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences (resolution CL90/108ii). On 26 June 2000 the school was renamed the School of Politics & International Relations (CL000/39b). As part of a Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences restructure, the School of Politics & International Relations was disestablished effective 31 January 2007. It was amalgamated with the schools of Social Work, Sociology & Anthropology and Social Science & Policy to form the new School of Social Sciences & International Studies (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers).
