    Description
    On 22 January 1968 Council abolished the School of Western European Languages and created in its place the three independent schools of French, German and Spanish (resolution 68/9). Associate Professor Hesse was then promoted to Professor and head of the School of German. At the Council meeting on 12 November 1979, the school was re-named the School of German Studies (resolution 79/201). On 10 December 1990 Council amalgamated the School of German Studies & the Department of Russian Studies to form a School of German & Russian Studies (resolution CL90/108).     Description
    The Professorial Board first recommended the establishment of a School of Western European Languages...under a Professor of French or German at its 12 September 1961 meeting (resolution 61/238i). It was not, however, until 12 November 1962 (resolution 62/182vi) that Council appointed Dr Judith Robinson as the first Professor of French and head of the School of Western European Languages within the Faculty of Arts. She commenced duty on 17 February 1963 and so the Department of French came into being. On 22 January 1968 Council abolished the School of Western European Languages and created in its place the three independent schools of French, German and Spanish (resolution 68/9).     On 9 November 1964 Council appointed Walter Hesse as Associate Professor of German (resolution 64/191ix). When he commenced his appointment on 26 June 1965 the Department of German came into being. On 22 January 1968 Council abolished the School of Western European Languages and created in its place the three independent schools of French, German and Spanish (resolution 68/9).     Description
    This series consists of the subject files of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The material is mainly typed and contained in manilla folders, which are arranged in alphabetical order by subject. Most of the material relates to individual Schools within the Faculty, especially personnel records of academic staff. The material was received by the Archives from the Office of the Dean of the Faculty of Arts. The files relate to the Academic Planning Committee, Alumni Association, Asian Studies, Australian Historical Association Conference, Committee Enquiring into Procedures for Selecting the Dean of Arts, Credit Point System, Executive Committee, General Files, M.A. And Ph.D., Metric Conversion, Overseas Study for Language Students, Staff, Student Affairs, Writers-in-Residence Scheme, Administration, School of Drama, School of English, School of French, School of German, School of History, School of History and Philosophy of Science, Language Laboratory, School of Philosophy, School of Political Science, School of Russian, School of Sociology and the School of Spanish and Latin American Studies. Three cassette tapes of are also included in this series. Each tape is a recording of an interview with Mr Ulman and the Head of the School of Russian. Two of these recordings are in Russian; the other is in both English and Russian. These are located in the AV Collection.
