    On February 11, 1980 Laurie Dillon was appointed as the first University Archivist. This meant that papers and documents stored throughout the university could now be brought together in a suitable environment. Initially located within the Vice-Chancellor's Unit and on the lower ground floor of the Chancellery, the Archives moved to its current location on level 1 of the UNSW Library in May 1987 where it now has 24-hour climate controlled storage conditions. At the time of his appointment Mr Dillon commented that establishing an archive means a sense of maturity in an organisation. You get a feeling of looking back at history. The archival resources of the university however did not simply materialise overnight. Since its foundation in 1949 several officers had been responsible for the care, custody and control of the university's inactive records including the historian, Dr Isadore Brodsky. In 1959 Allan Horton - later University Librarian - had written a report that called for the appointment of an archivist and the establishment of an archival program. In his report Mr Horton also recommended that an oral history program should be created that threw light on the history of the establishment of the university, of the various schools, and of the courses provided. He revisited the issue of a university archives and the need to employ a professional archivist again after Dr Brodsky retirement in June 1969 and this report sowed the seeds for later developments. In 2005 the University of New South Wales Archives proudly celebrates its twenty-fifth anniversary. It took a few more years before most of Allan Horton's vision could be realised but today the UNSW Archives is one of the premier university archives in the country. Its oral history program has thrived since the first interview was conducted with Mr Tay Cunningham, Warden of the University Union, in April 1980. Today this program continues to prosper with the generous assistance of the U Committee. The total number of interviews now stands at over 200 and, as Allan Horton had predicted many years ago, they throw a great deal of light on the history of the university as well as other important aspects of its rich heritage. In May 2006 the Records Administration Section and the University Archives were merged into a new Records and Archives Office. Booklet by the Languages & the Community Committee, which was established under the joint sponsorship of UNSW and the NSW Modern Language Teachers' Association. The brochure incorporates the findings of a survey conducted in 1966 and 1967 into employment opportunities...open to young people who have studied foreign languages at school or university.

    Description
    Annual report to the visiting committee of the School of Architecture & Building and School of Building by the head of School to the Schools' Visiting Committee. This Visiting Committee was initially known as the Visiting Committee for Building and Quantity Surveying, but from 1972 became the Visiting Committee for the School of Building. In the previous year, a re-establishment of the Faculty of Architecture had resulted in the creation of the new School of Building. The reports were presented to the Visiting Committee prior to its annual meeting and has also sometimes has the notice for the meeting of the Visiting Committee attached. The Archives' holding of this series are incomplete, but further reports, along with the minutes of the Committee, can be found in series 2198.

    Description
    Central West Field Stations Advisory Committee was established in July 1983 to advise the Vice-Chancellor on matters relating to the development and the operation of the Field Station with particular reference to policy, current activities and future operation. Members were drawn from the Institute of Rural Technology, the Central West Field Station, the School of Wool and Pastoral Sciences, the School of Surveying, and others to be nominated by the Vice-Chancellor. The approximately two-year period preceding the formation of the Advisory Committee saw the Central West Field Station suffer through drought and debt, and this Committee was part of efforts to turn the stations into commercially profitable farms. The inaugural meeting was held on 14 November 1983, with Professor Ray Golding as Chair.

    This series consists of the Tauber Report Submission by the University Library and Newcastle University College Library. The material is typed and maintained in a manilla folder. The report has been produced by the libraries in response to Questionnaire C of a survey of library resources undertaken by the Australian Advisory Council on Bibliographic Services (AACOBS) by Professor Maurice Tauber. Although maintained together, a separate report was produced by both Kensington and Newcastle libraries, each with its own separate appendix. The report contains a great amount of detail about the state of these libraries at the time that the submission was made, including information on relationships with academic staff, the strengths of the collections and co-operation with other libraries. The appendices also list the current holdings of the libraries.

    This series comprises the School's annual report to the Committee and minutes of the meetings of the Visiting Committee of the Department / School of Surveying as presented to Council. Occasionally there are minutes only for the reporting year. These 'minutes only' documents seem to originate from a different source, most likely a Secretariat or Registry file, and may have been used to complement the Visiting Committee Minute part of this series. Annual reports by the head of school for these years can be found in S708.
