    Description
    This series consists of the Joint Report of Activities 1955 - 1977 of Visiting Committees for the Schools of Highway Engineering and Transportation and Traffic, as submitted to Council. The report is typed publication of the history of both schools, as well as a set of minutes for the meeting of the two visiting committees.

    Description
    Visiting Committees, including the one for the School of Highway Engineering, were constituted under Resolution 68/137 of Council as a means of establishing a close liaison between industry and appropriate schools of the university. A report by A.H. Willis to the Professorial Board in May 1968 had found that the advisory panel system, dating from March 1950, no longer held any benefits. The report also recommended the abolition of advisory panels by the end of 1968 and the panels to be replaced by Visiting Committees. Resolution 68/126 of the Professorial Board requested A.H. Willis to present more specific proposals on the membership and terms of reference of the proposed Visiting Committees. His following recommendations to the Professorial Board from 11 June 1968 were put to Council though the recommendations of the Academic Committee in their document from 17 June 1968. Council at its meeting on 8 July 1968 resolved 68/137 - that Council adopts the terms of reference and membership of Visiting Committees as set out in the document presented dated 17th June 1968. The document recommended to Council that the Visiting Committees be established by Council on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor who consulted with deans and heads of school regarding the establishment of the committee and the chairmanship. The chairman, appointed by Council, was chosen from members external to the university. The terms of reference for Visiting Committees were 1. to appraise the educational programmes of the School in relation to the needs of industry and professional practice 2. to receive and discuss the Annual Report of the Head of the School 3. to report to the Council on the special problems facing the School 4. to aid the development of the School in any way possible The Visiting Committee for the School of Highway Engineering was comprised of distinguished members of the professional fields related to the school's activities. The Committee met annually and held its first meeting on 26 June 1969 with Mr R. J. S. Thomas in the Chair. The Committee was reconstituted every three years. At a meeting on 17 January 1977 Council resolved (resolution 77/4) that the School of Transportation and Traffic Engineering and the School of Highway Engineering would merge to form a new School of Transport and Highways, effective from 25 July 1977.     This series contains the Ku-ring-gai Residential Development Strategy Papers of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. The material consists of papers documenting Emeritus Professor Blunden involvement in the Ku-ring-gai Residential Development Strategy that looked at four categories: Heritage/Visual Character, Transport and Traffic, Infrastructure, and Environment. Professor Blunden addressed Council on contemporary traffic issues on 25 March 1997, attended workshops and remained closely involved in the process until the release of the Traffic and Transport Base Study in January 2000. This series contains the Institute of Engineers Australia Sydney Transport Panel Papers of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. Emeritus Professor Blunden was a Member of the Institute of Engineers Australia Sydney Transport Panel. This series consists of a flyer and speakers' notes from a meeting held in July 1985 on the topic Education and Training in Transport Engineering and Planning - Is There Enough?, as well as minutes for one meeting of the panel and a copy of its preliminary meetings program for 1998.     This series contains the Traffic and Parking Study for North Sydney Papers of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. The material is typed and maintained in a manilla folder, and includes a copy of the report entitled Traffic and Parking Study for North Sydney prepared by Emeritus Professor Blunden, Professor John Black and other members of the consultancy team, a photocopy of important elements of the report including the executive summary, and minutes of the inaugural meeting between the study sponsors - North Sydney Municipal Council and the Roads and Traffic Authority - held in the North Sydney Council Chambers on 21 April 1988. This series contains the Course Notes of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. The material consists of printed course notes as well as some handwritten and typed lecture notes and associated calculations used by Professor Blunden in the delivery of a range of university courses. Most of the material concerns courses within the School of Traffic Engineering but there are also course notes on the Control Systems course he taught in the Department of Electrical Engineering at the University of Sydney while employed by the CSIRO.     This series consists of the Metro-Manila Traffic Engineering and Management Project Papers of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. This material concerns Professor Blunden's visit to Manila in 1977 as an international authority on traffic engineering and education. The series consists of correspondence, copies of a seminar paper and an outline for a proposed four-week course at the University of the Philippines. Most of the contents of this file are typeg, although there are some handwritten pages. This series contains the Perth Western Suburbs Study Papers of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. The material consists of correspondence, an Interim Submission prepared by the City of Fremantle, and two reports written by Professor Blunden concerning a traffic management plan for Perth's western suburbs.     This series consists of an administrative file detailing negotiations between Professor Blunden and his publishers concerning the publication of his monographs: Introduction to Traffic Science (1967), The Land Use/Transport System: Analysis and Synthesis (1971), and The Land-Use/Transport System 2nd edition. This last book was co-authored with Professor John Black. The material is primarily correspondance, reviews and signed agreements, and does not include copies of the monographs. This series contains the Reports of Emeritus Professor Ross Blunden. Each item is a typed document, which consists of reports prepared by Professor (later Emeritus Professor) Blunden on traffic engineering and land use, many as the result of consultancies.
