On 9 May 1988 Council approved the affiliation of the university with the Communications Law Centre (resolution 88/67). The Centre was located within the Faculty of Law and the founding director was Dr Kate Harrison. In January 1989 the Centre was incorporated as a company limited by guarantee (file 880383). On 5 August 2003 the Academic Board gave its approval for the Communications Law Centre to become a University Research Centre located jointly within the faculties of Law and Arts & Social Sciences, although the latter faculty was to have administrative responsibility. It was also noted that the faculties will not accept continuing responsibility for the Centre when UNSW support expires on 30 June 2005 in the event of financial non-viability (resolution AB03/35). As the Centre was not able to become independently commercially viable, it was closed on 30 June 2005 (files 2004/1405 & 2004/0392). Controlling Organisation: UNSW - 09/05/1988-30/06/2005

On 3 August 1995 the Vice-Chancellor gave his approval to the division of the School of Sociology into two departments - the Department of Sociology, Culture & Communication and the Department of Sociology & Social Anthropology - until 30 June 1998, when the situation would be reviewed (file 951165). This was also supported by the Academic Board at its 5 September 1995 meeting (resolution AB95/97). The first head of the department was Dr Ann Game. In mid-1997 a Committee to Review the School of Sociology was formed. In its report it determined that the School of Sociology will retain two departments for a transitional period of three years (1998 - 2000)...at the end of the transitional period the two departments will be disestablished and the school will have a unitary structure (file 961766). By the 1999 Calendar, however, the two departments no longer appear, thus suggesting that both ceased to exist at the original review date of 30 June 1998. Description
Although Modern Greek was first offered in 1989 (file 880844), it was initially organised as part of the Languages Unit. On 31 October 1994 Council disestablished the Languages Unit and created the Modern Greek Section within the School of Modern Language Studies in the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences with effect from 1 January 1995 (resolution CL94/86c). By the 1998 Calendar the Section had become known as Modern Greek Studies. As part of a Faculty of Arts restructure, the School of Modern Language Studies was re-named the School of Languages and Linguistics effective 31 January 2007 (6 February 2007 Academic Board papers). As part of this restructure, it was also deemed that no school was to establish a departmental structure (Principles of Government-Feb 2007 in SRF - Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences) and discipline advisors were instead created for each area of study. Therefore Modern Greek Studies as an independent entity ceased to exist from this date. Controlling Organisation: UNSW - 01/01/1995-31/01/2007
