    Description
    On 1 September 2009 the Academic Board noted the establishment of the Australian Rivers and Wetlands Centre, effective immediately (resolution AB09/117). Shortly afterwards, however, the Centre appears to have become known as the Australian Wetlands and Rivers Centre. (http://www.wetrivers.unsw.edu.au - accessed 8 March 2010). The Centre was located within the Faculty of Science and the first director was Professor Richard Kingsford (file 2008/2483). The main aim of the Centre was to focus research effort on the key threats, risks and uncertainties facing biodiversity of wetlands and rivers and their conservation values (http://www.wetrivers.unsw.edu.au - accessed 8 March 2010). On 12 December 2013 the Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the change in name of the Centre to the Centre for Ecosystem Science (file 2013/17454-001).     Description
    On 2 May 2006 the Academic Board noted the establishment of the Centre for Health Assets Australasia (resolution AB06/38ii). It had, however, already been in operation since 1 January 2005, following the provision of major funding from the Health Capital and Asset Managers' Consortium of Australia and New Zealand (HCAMC), with a contract being signed to this effect by the Vice-Chancellor Professor Mark Wainwright on 17 December 2004. The main aim of the Centre was to become the leading Health Asset and Facility Management body in Australia and New Zealand. The Centre was located within the Faculty of the Built Environment with Ms Jane Carthey as the initial director (file 2005/1030).     Description
    On 6 February 2001 the Academic Board recommended to the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research) that the Centre for Advanced Macromolecular Design be established within the Faculty of Engineering (resolution AB01/4). This was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 20 February 2001. The main aim of the Centre was to build on the success of the current participants and develop a new area of research with the common theme of novel macromolecular structures for advanced applications.     On 1 June 2004 the Academic Board endorsed the establishment of the Centre for Energy and Environmental Markets (resolution AB04/53). This was formally approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 19 July 2004. The Centre was located within the Faculty of Engineering and the Centre was initially run by joint directors Associate Professor Hugh Outhred and Associate Professor Tony Owen. The main aim of the Centre was to provide Australian leadership in research and research training in the interdisciplinary design, analysis and performance monitoring of energy and environmental markets and their associated policy frameworks (file 2004/0714).     On 29 June 2009 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the creation of the Australian Centre for Astrobiology (file 2009/2885). On 4 August 2009 the Academic Board noted its establishment, which was effective immediately (resolution AB09/84). The Centre was located within the Faculty of Science and the initial director was Professor Malcolm Walter. The Centre had had a previous incarnation at Macquarie University, where it had been run by staff who later moved to UNSW. The Centre intended to conduct work in the following areas: - early evidence of life on Earth - modern analogues of ancient inhabited environments of Earth and of inhabitable environments in the Solar System - planetary science including the discovery and study of extrasolar planets - chemistry of the interstellar medium - public understanding of astrobiology and space science (file 2009/2885).     On 24 May 2006 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the City Futures Research Centre (file 2006/0920). On 4 July 2006 the Academic Board noted the Centre's establishment, which was effective immediately (resolution AB06/60). Its main purpose was to develop a better understanding of our cities, their people, the policies that manage their growth, the issues they face and the impacts they make on our society, environment and economy. The Centre was located in the Faculty of the Built Environment with Professor Bill Randolph as its first director (file 2006/0920).     On 14 January 2008 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the Centre for Sustainable Materials Research and Technology (SMART) (file 2008/0244). On 4 March 2008 the Academic Board noted this establishment (resolution AB08/15). The main research aims of the Centre were to find ways to reduce the environmental impact and enhance community benefits associated with materials-related industries and related technologies by developing novel and innovative materials and processes through world-class research. The Centre was located in the Faculty of Science and the first director was Professor Veena Sahajwalla (file 2008/0244). In 2010 the director of the Centre remained Professor Veena Sahajwalla.     On 14 July 2008 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the Disability Studies and Research Centre (DSARC). The main aim of the Centre was to be the recognised national centre in disability studies by actively using and promoting a social perspective of disability in disability education and research to maximise Australia's capacity to ensure a more equitable, participatory and accessible society for people with disability. The Centre was located within the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences with Rosemary Kayess as the initial Interim Director (file 2008/2258). On 1 February 2011 the Academic Board noted the disestablishment of the Disability Studies and Research Centre, effective 31 December 2010 (resolution AB11/3).     Description
    The Connected Waters Initiative was a joint program of the faculties of Engineering and Science, approved on 31 October 2006. The Initiative was initially headed by Professor Ian Acworth as the Gary Johnston Chair in Water Management. The main aim of the Initiative was to create a new research focus at UNSW on the interaction between groundwater and surface water, centred on the new Gary Johnston Chair of Water Management, with the aim of becoming the lead national institution in this field and to be a well-funded national ARC Centre of Excellence within five years (file 2006/2770). On 19 January 2009 the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research) approved the establishment of the Connected Waters Initiative as a Research Centre (file 2008/5117). This establishment was noted by the Academic Board on 5 May 2009 (resolution AB09/32). In 2010 the Director of the Connected Waters Initiative remained Professor Ian Acworth.     On 6 December 1994 the Academic Board recommended that the Vice-Chancellor approve the creation of a Centre for Franchise Studies in the Department of Legal Studies and Taxation within the Faculty of Commerce and Economics (resolution AB94/117). This recommendation was approved by the Vice-Chancellor on 16 December 1994. The first Director of the Centre was Associate Professor Andrew Terry. The main aim of the Centre was to coordinate multi-disciplinary teaching, research and networking activities...[to] support Australian franchise development (file 941322). On 5 June 1995 Council approved a change in name and status for the Department of Legal Studies and Texation. Thus the Centre became part of the School of Business Law and Taxation from this date (resolution CL95/40). On 26 March 2001 the Vice-Chancellor approved the disestablishment of the Centre (file 941322). Controlling Organisation: UNSW - 16/12/1994-26/03/2001
