The Department of Computer Science became the School of Computer Science and Engineering on 1/1/1991 with Professor John Hiller becoming the first head of school. Council at its meeting on 10 December 1990 resolved by CL90/108 (v) Proposed division of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science into two schools: 1. That a School of Computer Science and Engineering be established in the Faculty of Engineering from 1 January 1991; and 2. That the School of Computer Science and Engineering be based upon the present Department of Computer Science in the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science; 3. That the balance of the existing School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science be renamed the School of Electrical Engineering. Computer Science was established as its own school to give the Department greater academic, financial and management autonomy in order to pursue its range of academic interests and enterprises. Computer Science was by far the largest department within the School of Electrical Engineering and was teaching over half of the student load. Its student body was comprised not only of students of the Faculty of Engineering but also of the Board of Studies in Science of Mathematics. Staff of the Department of Computer Science felt the need for greater autonomy and thought that other departments of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science could feel stifled and constrained by the needs of the Department. Growth in computer engineering and the graduate teaching and research areas of the Department was certain and the Department would be larger than many schools in the university. The range of its activities and interests and the discipline of computer science had grown rapidly and the Department also was active in areas not especially closely related to electrical engineering, eg psychology, philosophy, computer literacy, and other areas of cognitive science. One of the largest schools of its kind, in 2004 research was grouped in the following areas: algorithms, artificial intelligence, bioinformatics, computer architecture, computer systems, database systems, networks, and software engineering. That year the school attracted over $4.5 million in research funding including Australian Research Council grants and grants from industry, both local and international. The school at that time was also partner in a number of external research centres including the Smart Internet Technology Cooperative Research Centre, and the national ICT Australia (NICTA), a research Centre of Excellence in Information and Communications Technologies. In 2008 the School of Computer Science and Engineering and the School of Electrical Engineering and Telecommunications had joint responsibility for the curriculum of the Computer Engineering program. Staff of the school was grouped into research groups of Artificial Intelligence, Computer Systems and Software Engineering. Courses in these areas were offered to students taking major studies in computer science or computer engineering, while introductory-level computing courses were available more generally to students studying Science, Arts or Engineering. Computer science had links with discrete mathematics, which furnished the theory behind the algorithms that computer software implemented, and electrical engineering, which supplied the then present technology underlying physical computing devices. Graduate employability was enhanced by CSE's strong and growing industry links. The Computer Science degree had a Co-op Scholarship program that gave students extensive industry experience from their second year; all Engineering degrees required industrial training experience. The School ran an Industry Liaison Office whose primary aim was to link students and employers both for in-course experience and for graduate employment. The Faculty of Engineering was established on 8th May, 1950 under Council resolution 54. Through a ruling by the Developmental Council engineering courses had already been in operation at Sydney Technical College from 1st March, 1948, but this resolution officially created the Faculty. Initially the Faculty contained four departments - Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil Engineering and Mining Engineering - and was administered by Dean H. J. Brown. The inaugural meeting of the Faculty took place on 7th June, 1950. In 2013, the Faculty, under Dean Professor Graham Davies, included nine schools and nineteen Centres. The Department of Electrical Engineering dates back to the formation of the university itself on 1 July 1949, as it was one of the departments that had much of its origins in the Sydney Technical College. The first head of department was H. J. Brown, who was appointed on the same day as the university's foundation. When the first three university faculties were established by Council on 8 May 1950 (resolution 54), Electrical Engineering became one of the initial four departments within the Faculty of Engineering. On 10 September 1951 Council changed the designation of all departments to schools and so the School of Electrical Engineering came into existence (resolution 153). On 8 September 1980 Council altered the name of the school to the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science effective from 1981 (resolution 80/139). On 10 December 1990 Council approved the creation of a School of Computer Science & Engineering from the Department of Computer Science within the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science effective 1 January 1991. The name of the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science then reverted back to the School of Electrical Engineering (resolution CL90/108v). On 9 November 1998 Council changed the named of the School of Electrical Engineering to the School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications (resolution CL98/80b). In 2006 the head of the School of Electrical Engineering & Telecommunications was Professor Branko Celler. The second Faculty of Science was established at the 18 June, 2001 meeting of Council (resolution CL001/49) effective 1 July 2001, as a result of the disestablishment of the Faculty of Life Science and the Faculty of Science and Technology. Professor Merilyn Sleigh was appointed as Interim Dean. In 2013 the faculty, under Dean Professor Merlin Crossley, encompassed nine schools and eighteen centres. The formation of the Professorial Board was provided for in Chapter III of the by-laws passed by Council on 12th September, 1949 (resolution 5). These stated that the Professors and Associate Professors in the several Faculties and such other persons as Council may appoint shall form a Board, to be called the Professorial Board (III, 1). The Board was to be specially charged with the duty of furthering and co-ordinating the work of Faculties and Departments and of encouraging scholarship and research and of considering the studies and discipline of the University (III, 4, i). Specifically the Board could consider reports made to it by any faculty, appoint internal and external examiners, prescribe books and details of subjects for lectures, determine the conditions of competition for any post-graduate award, decide all questions of admission ad eundem gradum and advanced standing and submit recommendations to Council regarding teaching staff and academic standing (III, 4, ii). As well, any member of the Professorial Board was given the power to suspend any student, as long as the misconduct occurred in the Department or presence of the member (III, 5, a). The by-laws also dictated that the first Chairman of the Professorial Board would be elected in May, 1950 (III, 2). Meetings would be held at the discretion of the Chairman or at the written request of the President, Director or three members of the Board (III, 6, a). At the 13th March, 1950 meeting of Council it was determined that until July, 1950, the professors already appointed should act as a committee with authority to consider all matters which, in accordance with the provision of Chapter III of the By-laws (the Professorial Board), shall be within the jurisdiction of the Professorial Board when constituted (resolution 40ii). The first meeting of Professorial staff had in fact already taken place on 1st February, 1950, with Director A. Denning as Chairman, and meetings were held generally on a weekly basis until the end of June. Under the provision in the by-laws, on 31st May, 1950 Denning was formally elected as Chairman of the Professorial Board. The first committees of the Professorial Board were determined at the Professorial Committee's meeting on 6th June, 1950. These were Buildings & Sites, Equipment & Supplies, Research, Graduate School & Post-Graduate Studies, Publications & Library, Academic Studies & Standards and Staff & Students. The Professorial Board held its first official meeting on 4th July, 1950. At this meeting, the membership of the first seven committees named by the Professorial Committee on the 6th June was finalised. By the time of the last meeting of the Board on 7th June, 1988, approximately eighty committees had come and gone throughout the Board's existence. At the 14th September, 1987 meeting of Council changes to Chapter III of the by-laws were passed (resolution 87/99c). As a result, effective July 1988, the Professorial Board ceased to exist and the Academic Board was established in its place. The Faculty of Science was established as one of the first three faculties of the University at the Council meeting on 8th May, 1950 (resolution 54). Professor John Philip Baxter became the Dean of the new Faculty, which initially contained three Schools - Applied Chemistry, Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering. At the 2nd December, 1996 meeting of Council the Faculty of Science was disestablished effective 1st July, 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4). The Faculty of Science & Technology was created by Council on 2nd December, 1996 effective from 1st July 1997 (resolution CL96/88/4a). The inaugural meeting of the Faculty was on 8th July, 1997 with Associate Professor A. H. Dooley as the Presiding Member. At this time, under Dean Colin Sutherland, the Faculty contained six schools, four departments, three Centres, the Universities' Surface Analysis Facility and the Cornea and Contact Lens Research Unit. The Faculty of Science & Technology was disestablished by Council on 18th June, 2001 effective from July 2001 (resolution CL001/49). The final meeting of the Faculty Board was held on 26th April, 2001. At the 9 July 1962 meeting of Council, a position was created entitled the Professor of Electronic Computation and Director of the Digital Computing Laboratory within the School of Electrical Engineering to accept responsibility for the development of courses and the expansion of our digital computing facilities (Council resolution 62/105). On 14 September 1964 Professor M. W. Allen was appointed to this position (Council resolution 64/152). He entered on duty on 26 May 1965 and it appears that the Department of Electronic Computation effectively came into existence at this time. At the 2 August 1972 meeting of the Vice-Chancellor's Advisory Committee the name of the department was changed to the Department of Computer Science (file 00020416). On 8 September 1980 Council altered the name of the school to the School of Electrical Engineering & Computer Science effective from 1981 (resolution 80/139) The department became the School of Computer Science and Engineering on 1/1/1991 (Council meeting - 10 December 1990 resolved by CL90/108 (v)) Controlling Organisation: UNSW - c. 26/05/1965-31/12/1990

Visiting Committees, including the one for the School of Electrical Engineering / Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, were constituted under Resolution 68/137 of Council as a means of establishing a close liaison between industry and appropriate schools of the university. A report by A.H. Willis to the Professorial Board in May 1968 had found that the advisory panel system, dating from March 1950, did no longer hold any benefits. The report also recommended the abolition of advisory panels by the end of 1968 and the panels to be replaced by Visiting Committees. Resolution 68/126 of the Professorial Board requested A.H. Willis to present more specific proposals on the membership and terms of reference of the proposed Visiting Committees. His following recommendations to the Professorial Board from 11 June 1968 were put to Council though the recommendations of the Academic Committee in their document from 17 June 1968. Council at its meeting on 8 July 1968 resolved 68/137 - that Council adopts the terms of reference and membership of Visiting Committees as set out in the document presented dated 17th June 1968. The document recommended to Council that the Visiting Committees be established by Council on the recommendation of the Vice-Chancellor who consulted with deans and heads of school regarding the establishment of the committee and the chairmanship. The chairman, appointed by Council, was chosen from members external to the university. The terms of reference for Visiting Committees were 1. to appraise the educational programmes of the School in relation to the needs of industry and professional practice 2. to receive and discuss the Annual Report of the Head of the School 3. to report to the Council on the special problems facing the School 4. to aid the development of the School in any way possible The Visiting Committee for the School of Electrical Engineering / Electrical Engineering & Computer Science, comprising distinguished members of the professional fields related to the school's activities, replaced the Electrical Engineering Advisory Panel. The Committee met annually and held its first meeting on 22 September 1969 with Mr H. J. Brown in the Chair. The Committee was reconstituted every three years.
